Turkey earthquake: Seven dead in toppled Van hotel

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake has killed at least seven people in eastern Turkey, and trapped many more under collapsed buildings.

About 20 buildings have collapsed, including a six-storey hotel in the city of Van, where dozens of aid workers and journalists were staying.

The quake late on Wednesday was centred 16km (10 miles) south of Van.

The same region was struck last month by a 7.2-magnitude earthquake which killed more than 600 people.

Thoughts and prayers out to Kanter, Okur, Sepanol and everyone else over there.

Not to minimize these deaths but a 5.6 is nothing special. Hell, ours on the east coast this summer was a 5.8 or 5.9.

Depends on the quailty of construction as well. Most cities in CA are built to withstand pretty severe EQ's. The Northridge quake (near LA) in 1994 measured 6.7 and "only" killed 57 people. The Loma Prieta quake (which occured as Game 3 of the 1989 SF-Oakland World Series was starting), measured 6.9 and killed 63. Put these quakes in other major cities outside the U.S. and the death toll could have been thousands.
