I just think the cap gymnastics are difficult here... we are the team that couldn't figure out enough gymnastics to avoid the tax this year... when we were a couple million away. I know DL is gone but JZ doesn't strike me as a cap wizard (he came from Milwaukee who had a comical cap screw up this offseason). Maybe we have a capologist on staff that everyone just ignores... it sure seems like we don't quite have that **** figured out.By itself, yes. I would assume many deals would be made if we took this path.
The hard cap is $140.6 million.
Rudy $35.3
Don $28.1
Bojan $18.7
Lonzo ~$18
Joe $13.1
Clarkson $12.4
Royce $8.8
Udoka $2.1
Oni $1.8
#30 $1.6
Hughes $1.5
11 PLAYER TOTAL - $141.4
Taxpayer MLE - $5.89
Biannual Exception (BAE) - $3.73
Minimum Contracts:
- with NBA Experience Player ~$2 million
- without NBA Experience Player ~$1 million
We are a Bojan for a smaller contract or JC for a smaller contract away from where we need to be.
This is why a Bojan for Kuzma deal makes so much sense. It literally saves us almost $6 million (depending on what Gasol and Harrell do) which opens the door of a possibility of S&T deals.

No and no.Favors already played for Pels
Does he want to go back
Do Pels want him back
I guess I'm looking at a lot of these deals as - what do we do if Conley just wants to leave?I just think the cap gymnastics are difficult here... we are the team that couldn't figure out enough gymnastics to avoid the tax this year... when we were a couple million away. You could do a mike sign and trade for Kuzma and then do Bojan for Lonzo and you are probably close to being where you need to be... assuming you found a home for Favs without returning salary. The hard cap is just so restrictive. Can't even swap out minimum guys... and in the end you did a bunch of gymnastics to strap yourself to Lonzo (who I think is good but not incredible) and Kuzma who is okay and people think he will morph and be more awesome. I think the defense gets marginally better and the offense gets quite a bit worse
The options where he just up and leaves I think are pretty limited. Basically LA can't do it without our/someone's help. Dallas would need to lose Hardaway or have Richardson opt out... which I think is unlikely. If NY decides Mike is the guy and give him $25M plus you beg them to take a second to create a trade exception for you (I think they'd do it).I guess I'm looking at a lot of these deals as - what do we do if Conley just wants to leave?
If he does, we have to be desperate to find a PG who can defend while also being able to get Rudy good looks. Lonzo and Brogdon fit the bill.
It won't be easy, but we could do it. Maybe we lose #30 in the process. But if we end up with Kuzma and Lonzo instead of Favors and Bojan (because Mike just left), we had a brilliant off-season.

Did you just say you would be cool with moving the #10 AND Rudy to get in the top 6? The three time DPY and one of the greatest defensive players of all time to move up 4 spots? My ****ing gawd people forget quickly.Frankly, if we make a move to get to #10, I’m cool with packaging 10 and Gobert to move up to get a stud in the top 6, and rolling the dice with Udoka and maybe Utah State dude in the second round at C.

Yes but number #6 could be anything... it could even be a guy who wins a DPOY!Did you just say you would be cool with moving the #10 AND Rudy to get in the top 6? The three time DPY and one of the greatest defensive players of all time to move up 4 spots? My ****ing gawd people forget quickly.
WTF......let's go all in and trade DM and get in the top two.Yes. The top six in this draft are that good.
TJ has been wrong before.Guys, it’s really totally pointless to speculate about this stuff. TJ has already told us we runnin’ it back.
The only way this offseason gets interesting (likely in a bad way) is if Conley bails for nothing.
I wonder what we’d do in that scenario. Honestly, we will definitely be worse next year if Conley bails. But may be better in 3 years if he does bail.
Yes but number #6 could be anything... it could even be a boat!
He said we weren’t going for Mirotic when we got Bogey . Turns out…..DL went for Mirotic before Bogey lol. I do wonder if Jazz “connections” with local media are a bit different at the moment as well with Smith for the time being.TJ has been wrong before.
Judging by everything local and national reporters say, Smith really really really wants a 3rd contract from Mitchell. Every decision made revolves around that want. Do you go all in one more season? Or do you change course right now. The front office stuff will be interesting to see how it shakes out, how much Wades finger prints are on it, etc. Smith isn’t the Millers, and I bet Zanick and others feel a burning pressure right now to make the right moves.Regardless of the reporting, the Jazz have very little flexibility for any moves. I would personally look to trade Bogey and Clarkson for younger players, but that's probably not going to happen.
There's really not much the Jazz can do. You go all in during the last two years...it was the right decision, but Quin and the players failed miserably to perform. People are willing to tank decades for the chance we had. The reality is that we're going to have to eat some **** on the backend for our golden opportunity.
So what’s the endgame? Blow it all the way up next offseason?Regardless of the reporting, the Jazz have very little flexibility for any moves. I would personally look to trade Bogey and Clarkson for younger players, but that's probably not going to happen.

The reporting that no major moves are likely to happen is hard to reconcile with the reporting that Ryan is going to do everything to make Don happy and get a third contract. Go all in for one more year and then blow it up next year? Huh? How is that gonna help keep Don around?Judging by everything local and national reporters say, Smith really really really wants a 3rd contract from Mitchell. The problem is, I’m not sure what choice you have. It has to happen this year or next year. If you have Donovan/Rudy on the roster. You’re going to be a good team. To be quite honest, I still think it’s up in the air whether Donovan actually wants Rudy on the team or believes it’s to his greater benefit, right or wrong. They may know what will please Mitchell, and that may be trading Rudy, and revamping things for him. That will include FO hires. I’m not sure what it looks like exactly, but everyone from Andy to Windhorst seems to say Smith really really really wants to keep him. (We all know my opinion) But Wade and Smith want Mitchell around for a long time. The reporting that no major moves are likely to happen is hard to reconcile with the reporting that Ryan is going to do everything to make Don happy and get a third contract.
