Jazz Offseason Plan

Some Jazz rumors in this latest article from Matt Moore.

Mixed Jazz

This is a report that doesn’t tell you a whole lot. I’m passing it on as a sign that there’s not a clear understanding of where Utah is at.

Dennis Lindsay transitioned to a consultant role with the team with Justin Zanik taking over. New ownership likely wants to be aggressive, but the team is also coming off the best record in the NBA, even if they lost disappointingly in the conference semifinals to the Clippers without Kawhi Leonard.

Multiple league sources indicated this week that the Jazz were open to trade discussions. The consensus is that Derrick Favors is not only available, but Utah is eager to move him to clear his roughly $20 million in remaining salary (including a $10 million player option for 2022-23).

However, sources suggested that Bojan Bogdanovic and Joe Ingles were also bandied about as available if the Jazz could get a significant upgrade, which would be a major shakeup for the team, especially with Mike Conley headed to unrestricted free agency this summer.

Two executives flatly countered that this week, however, saying the Jazz had indicated in no uncertain terms that they were planning to “run it back” with the core from this season.

So which is it?

Given the information, I’d lean towards the idea that the Jazz are more likely to stand pat. Those things can change quickly if Conley moves on and Utah is forced to try and reconfigure the roster, or if ownership increases its desire for aggressive moves.

A more simplistic look might simply be that the Jazz intend to run it back unless an offer they can’t refuse comes along, which it most likely won’t.

But this is a good example of how much “summer noise” there is and how all information, no matter the angle, should be treated with skepticism.

F running it back. We have too many flaws the way it is.

Kinda interesting. I think Favs has like a 20% of being on the roster to start the year. I’ve outlined how problematic that contract is. The other guys being in rumors is kinda interesting. It’s good they are seeing what’s out there and apparently either are disconnected or not showing all their cards. See what kind of offers come in for Bojan. I really can’t see a trade where we move Joe and get better. I don’t think the acquiring team would have done their homework because I doubt they get a locked in Joe if they make him move cities with one year left. My guess is the family would potentially go back to Australia while he plays out the season.

Erring towards continuity. Bank on it.

Erring towards continuity. Bank on it.
It will be continuity with a small splash of trading Favs… like when I want to change things up and order a lime wedge when I get my diet dr. Pepper.

Brilliant idea to run it back this year then wait until our trade pieces have less value then transition. ****ing brilliant

According to TJ yesterday on Spence Checketts’ podcast, the only three guys on our roster with positive trade value are Don, Rudy, and Royce.

If that’s true, their trade value really can’t get much lower if it’s already rock bottom, right?

Also, there’s no way JC doesn’t have trade value. Bogey is also completely worth his contract, so no idea why he wouldn’t have positive value for a “win now” team looking for shooting and scoring.

The “erring towards continuity” line pisses me off — probably much more than it should.

It’s such a treadmill mentality. It suggests to me action out of fear and risk aversion. Someone posted that our records under KOC and DL’s leadership are basically the same. We’ve been on like an 18 year treadmill.

It’s going to take a leadership philosophy with less aversion to risk for this franchise to win a championship. As a small market, you have to get lucky AND nail everything.

I think TJ's takes are hot garbage. JC has value. Bogey's value is more contextual given his age and contract, but he balls and is paid a fair salary.

If he talks about having a scoop with the FO, well, take it with a grain of salt but he's the FO's mouthpiece. But if I want a take, I'll get one just about anywhere else.

if the NBA finals series is showing anything it's that the Jazz need a significant upgrade, somebody who can create their own offense, dribble penetrate, shoot and handle the ball besides Donovan. Conley is good but undersized and injury-prone. Gobert needs to develop a J so that he can be more effective in pick and rolls.
The Bucks have potentially 3 guys who can make big plays and one superstar.
Ideally we need a Devin Booker type player in place of Conley+Bojan. Easier said than done

I'm still on board with @Wes Mantooth and his idea of trading Bogey for Rozier.

Charlotte has LaMelo and they can re-sign Graham. They lack a good floor spreading SF/PF. Rozier is in a contract year so Charlotte might sell low.

If we could make it Bogey AND Favors for Rozier, I would do that too. That would save us $11 million. I could see Charlotte open to the idea.

We need the toughness, heart and defense Rozier would provide. If Conley stays, we trade Clarkson.

No trade Bojan for LaMelo then trade the Jazz name to NOP for Lonzo. Sign LiAngelo. Rename the team LaVar’s Balls.

I would love it if they took a shot at getting Barton.

How? He didn’t leave that money on the table to take less? He likely gets a long term deal from the Nuggets.

I don't know, you figure it out. Trade Bogey, release some people, let Mike go, whatevs. I would just love to get Barton.
