Jazz Offseason Plan

Favors/30 are most likely getting dealt on draft night.

There is zero chance we make the roster better in the short term without Conley coming back.

We will be extremely good next season if we ran it back but have someone like Batum instead of Favors. I’d be willing to say we’d probably be the #1 seed again.

There is a realistic alternate universe where we’re up 2-0 on the Suns going to Phoenix in the WCF.

Team was completely built around Rudy during the Crowder/Rubio era. All defense, no offense. Problem was and still is that we over corrected back to the offensive side. If we had a more healthy mix of shooters and defenders we'd be hoisting the trophy this week.
It is killing me watching the Suns, because their team is built exactly the way ours should be. There are even parallels (regardless of who is better): Ayton=Rudy, Paul=Conley, Booker=Mitchell. But it’s the rest of their team, with athletic two way players, that makes the difference. They even have Jae.

Yeah, that's probably accurate, but I do think the latest iteration placed a larger burden on Gobert and made things easier for Mitchell.
How often does better spacing and unselfish play NOT help? It seems this is the question they approached their roster building with first, which is hard to argue against (I would argue with particulars, though).

I know Jae became a punching bag, but if you watch basketball - especially playoff basketball - and can't come away with an appreciation for having dudes that gum up the game for the other team by any means necessary (but have enough skill to stay on the court), I truly do not know what to tell you.

Bingo. Imagine how big an impact he’d have made this year. There was no one else in his role except Royce.

Jae Crowder is an all-star of throwing sand in the other team's gears. It is god damn annoying to watch in any situation besides when it benefits your team. But Chris Paul gets it, going out of his way to personally recruit him to the Suns ("We need you").

If he wasn't an important, useful, and worthy rotation player, he wouldn't have been to the last two finals. Point blank.

I'll always be a fan.

Also willing shooters who aren't afraid... is it annoying when they go 1/8? Yes. Is it helpful they aren't scared to shoot the open shot when they are 1/7? Yes.

We need an *******... been saying it a while. There aren't many assholes that are also beloved by their teammates. Hopefully we find some toughness somewhere.

But also have the good sense to know not to just put up every shot that touches their hand. Clarkson has straight-up shot the team out of a double-digit number of games.

I dig Clarkson a lot, but I feel like you could get 67% of Clarkson for 15% of the cost in Burks.

Might. JC just has a nuclear hot gear that I don't think many guys can get to. I definitely have seen the bottom of the JC roller coaster a few times and thought "maybe we should get off at some point".

There is a potential pivot point with him that could help us be a little more normal/even if something good came up in trade. It just doesn't seem ideal to have him, Don, and Mike. His on/off stuff in the playoffs was pretty rough. I also just love having him because he's just JC.

Is there any chance the Jazz can stretch Favors under the agreement that he waives his player option? That way Favors can go out and sign another long-term contract while making the 9 million he is owed this year over the next 3 years (I think that's how it works).

Jazz do it to save money without giving up assets. Favors does it because that way he has more control over where he plays next season. As long as he can sign a 2 year 10 million dollar deal, he will make the same total money over the next 3 years.

You could. He’d have to have a team locked in obviously already. I probably wouldn’t go that route. I’d want the contract so I can eithe go get a different player with it or if we use it in an uneven trade where we are trading him into someone’s space we would open up a decent sized trade exception. Most of them go unused but if you got to the trade deadline and things were looking great it might be the item that lands you a PJ Tucker type player and make the dollars work.

This is the route I would take but the bigger issue is really a coaching issue. Keeping his contract means you're keeping him as the only guy getting minutes who isn't Gobert.

We have a long way to go before we have to worry about stretching Favors.

See what Mike wants.

See what other teams do.

Find a team that wants/needs Favors. One will exist, and we shouldn't have to sacrifice an asset.

Right. I meant using the deal in the offseason... even if we traded him for say Jones Jr. straight up... even if Jones Jr. doesn't work for us the salary helps you match another different trade if need be.

Sending him with #30 for a couple second rounders and cap space gives a lot of flexibility later should we need to add something.
