Favs Deal Must Be Moved

I can’t find the post where someone said who gives a **** if we have Favors here and it costs a lot of money, it’s not our money…

Well, not trading him will affect our MLE, no? If we get under a certain threshold, the full MLE is like 9M+. If we don’t get under it, it’s only like 6M. Could be the difference between signing Batum or a much lesser player.

You are right. Favors does not impact using the MLE or not.

I think our best case scenario is the $5.9 taxpayer MLE and we will also have access to the BAE which is $3.7 I believe.

Yes, we can use the MLE but the amount that it is changed based on if we are over or under that threshold. There’s zero chance Batum is taking 6M. He might take 9M.

Aren't we already considered a "taxpayer" since we paid are paying the tax from last year and we'll be in the tax going into the offseason?

The hard cap is the issue. I don't think we can use MLE unless we clear enough salary to project to be under the apron for the year. I think we have to do that first.

I think he only get taxpayer MLE from contenders... I don't think any contender roll out the MLE for him. Not sure he'd choose 9M over 6M if the team is bad. A one or two year overpay with the Knicks could be on the table. I think Batum's market is taxpayer MLE.

I also don't think a middling team would offer him the money after his last stint in Charlotte. He wasn't in a good situation and basically shut down. I don't think teams have forgotten.

The issue is he will have multiple taxpayer MLE offers from teams like the clips, Lakers, Warriors, maybe Brooklyn... I think he's a longshot but not impossible.

I actually think he could get more, something like 2/25 from someone like the Mavs if they miss out on a stud in FA. I’m basing that largely on what Iggy got years ago which was far more. Idk.

All based on Mike leaving so we pivot to avoid the luxury and build for the future. So...

Rudy
for
A combination of Rozier, Miles Bridges, PJ Washington, and a boatload of picks

That saves us anywhere from $25 million to $5 million.
-Rozier and PJ saves $10 million.
-Or Bridges and PJ instead which saves about $23 million.
-Or we could take all three, and we still save around $5 million.

Then try to get Lonzo Ball or John Collins using picks and Bojan.
If we can't, we still try to work trades and/or signings.

2021 Lineup (assuming Rozier/PJ trade and no Lonzo/Collins):
Don $28.1
Bojan $18.7
Rozier $17.9
Joe $13.1
Clarkson $12.4
Favors $9.7
Full MLE Player $9.5
Royce $8.8
Washington $4.2
Udoka $2.1
Oni $1.8
#30 $1.6
Hughes $1.5

12 Players - $120 million
Luxury tax is $136
Sign a full MLE player ($9.5)
We avoid the luxury comfortably.

Our cap situation heading into 2022:
Don $30.3
Bojan $19.5 expiring
Clarkson $13.3
Favors $10 expiring
Full MLE from 2021 - $9.7
Royce $9.3
PJ Washington $5.8
Doke $2.2
#30 $1.8
Rozier contract expired
Joe contract expired

That's only $101 million of contracts and $30 of it is expiring Bojan and Favors.
We could trade picks and Bojan/Favors for a good player.
Then sign a max contract player.
Boom - Big 3. We still have Clarkson and Royce too.
And hopefully PJ, Doke, and #30 have developed.
Maybe we can find a way to keep Rozier too, or we could S&T him for more value.

2021 would be a fight to make the playoffs, but I think we could do it. From there we could have a brighter future than we do right now.
Holy complicated-aintgonnahappen, Batman!

I am going to be a contrarian here. Despite limited minutes Favs was still third on the team in rebounds per game behind Royce and Rudy. If you pencil him out playing the same minutes as Rudy he looks numbers wise very similar to Rudy. I don't think he is as washed as everyone on the board says he is. I also noticed something interesting regarding three point shooting percentage. JIngles was no. one followed by Ersan and Brantley. Kind of makes you wonder if Quin is the village idiot when he kept trotting out Oni, Matty Ice and Forrest for brickapaloza.

Tangentially, Favors back and hamstrings always look so damn tight in games based on how he runs. It’s obvious. I know he’s had back issues before and am curious if our lauded training staff has had him swim extensively, and stretch/do yoga a lot to work on his flexibility. Seems like it could do wonders for him.

And yes, I’m fully aware how ridiculous it sounds that I’m questioning educated and trained professionals.

Things to watch on the Favs trade front:

- Does Sacramento or Charlotte draft a center? Sengun and Kai Jones are being mocked to them in some cases. If one or both draft centers then they likely aren't going to want to invest what it would cost to get Holmes. Makes them more likely to bite on a Favs deal as a guy to fill the position for a couple years while the kids learn.

- Where does Myles Turner get traded? I think he moves on draft night... Hornets and Kings are possibilities imo. I could also see something with Portland and CJ.

If Sacramento and Charlotte are out then the most logical Favs destinations are Portland for DJJ, NY into cap space once they strike out in FA, OKC into cap space for assets (not good)... maybe Chicago depending on how they operate.

If Indiana moves Turner on draft night, we should try to move Favors to Indiana for Lamb. Or maybe find a 3rd team for Lamb to save some money. Without Turner, Indiana would probably like to have a solid bench big option like Favors.

I think they want to use Goga there... would likely sign a minimum dude. Unless they think Goga is a bust but I think he's shown enough to be a reliable backup.

Jones Jr. is a little intriguing straight up for Favs. He actually does quite well as a roll man... so you could use him as the roll man on offense and maybe you nab a guy like Mike Muscala who can pretend to be a center but can stretch the floor. You'd give up a lot of points but we generally do that with Rudy off the floor anyway. Not an every night type of thing but I think Jones gives you some interesting possibilities.

I don't see why POR does that. DJJ is probably a better C option than Favors.

Nah they need a real center and one that can use up minutes when Nurkic gets hurt. With Collins likely out again to start the season I think this is appealing. Jones was out of the rotation in playoffs… they may want to see Little a bit this year. They probably don’t want to use their exception on a center so Favs is better than the minimum options.

Favors is not reliable to play big minutes. If Nurk is out, do you really want him playing more than 15 minutes anyways? I also don't think Favors is much better than the minimum options. If he was a FA this year I don't think he would get much more than the minimum and certainly not $10M a year. He looked completely toast defensively and was bad in every situation.

DJJ could be considered an exchange of bad goods, but to me Favors is a much more obvious negative and does not fit bill for Portland. His health is completely unreliable and even when he's playing he was not good.

I might be confused at what you are saying here, but Favors was pretty solid this year. Not worth his contract, for sure, but he had a net rating of +2.6, and mostly played against starters.
