NFL Talk

I can't wait 'til the Niners get a bye and lose at home in the divisional playoff round. Katie won't reply to this message not because he has me on ignore. He won't reply to me or bet me on this because he doesn't have the *****. But everyone already knows this.

You're a bitter man, Hobo.

Aside from your obvious emotional bent, what is it that makes you so certain that SF is bound to flame out of the playoffs?

As a Niners fan, I am encouraged by the fact that they have played and beaten several top teams in the league. If they had been benefiting solely from the weak division they're in, I might see the logic. But really, I don't believe that the confidence they have found is somehow going to melt away once they hit the playoffs. I am not certain that they are good enough to take down the Packers, but hey, they are as close as anyone.

If you don't mind, though, I really am curious as to why you believe they will get immediately blown out of the playoffs.

Bitter? About what? I'm glad the Eagles are losing to be honest and hope they lose out so they can get better draft picks. As far as my general tone, I suppose it does sound a bit much. I simply can't stand loudmouths who brag about their team but when push comes to shove won't stake something to show much faith they supposedly have in said team. If not money, something. Katie, you name it. I'm being the loudmouth now so what would you be willing to wager as far as the Niners divisional round playoff game? I'm curious so if someone would respond to this so she can see it, I'd appreciate it.

As far as why I think they'll lose, I have two major reasons, the first of which is history. I feel like every year or so, there's a team like this, who has an easier schedule, has some luck, gets the #1 or more often, #2 seed, and then flames out in the divisional round when they play someone of note. Someone who's hungry and not just complacent that they got the #2 seed. The Falcons were sort of like this last year. The Bears in the Dick Jauron era were definitely like this. My other reason has to do with their sweet schedule. The Niners have beat some solid teams: the Bengals, the Cowboys, the Lions. Are any of them actually going to make the playoffs though? Maybe the Cowboys but I don't think the other two will. In short, they've been the recipient of an easy schedule and have even easier games to come. Once they play someone real like Baltimore in eight days, let's see how they do. I just don't see it ending too well for them. In the second round of the playoffs, I think the Saints could give them fits because of their mere ability to out-offense them. Perhaps I'm wrong. Everyone in the NFC is largely unimpressive in my opinion while the AFC has a deeper group of teams with resumes, qb's, and coaching. But with Payton, Brees, and company, I think the Niners could be shellshocked like they've not been all year...even with a suspect defense.

Quoted so Katie can see it.

The 9ers have everything but an elite QB. They are tough in the trenches, have great STs, really good D, and weapons. Unlike their last fiery coach this guy can run an offense and the team is clearly buying in. Even though I am not a fan of Smith, Harbaugh is using him in an efficient manner which is working. Who knows what will happen the rest of the way but so far they have been very impressive and there is just no reason to bag on somebody enjoying it. That team has had a little while since success.

As far as betting against the 9ers going to the championship game it's just a loaded bet. No serious better would take it. He ought to at least offer great odds or wait until the playoffs. The season is barely halfway over and a lot can happen to a team.

How many teams have won Superbowls without an elite QB lately?

I can't believe we have something else in common besides the Jazz.
I knew I shouldn't have opened this thread.

I'm not a 9'ers fan at all and if it wasn't for Smith would be happier seeing them lose I just wanted to point out you forgot to mention them beating a couple of other elite teams the Giants (@ home) and the Eagles (on the road) oh wait I guess only one of those teams are elite. Also they've had what 3 or 4 games back east and won them all any road win is never easy so I wouldn't just dismiss that.

But I think you're right that history says they may win one playoff game as it as all come to fast and teams usually have to "earn" it and not be a flash in the pan to get past the championship game to the SB.

Also don't worry my Phins play your Eagles so that is at least one win left on your schedule, funny that game might decide who gets the 4th or 5th pick.

I completely disagree with this. This year the NFC looks like it's a much better conference than the AFC. Right now I'd put Green Bay, San Francisco, Chicago, and the Giants ahead of any team in the AFC, and the Saints and Cowboys on par with any team in the AFC.

Actually neither are an elite team. I'm the only Giants fan here and I'll be the first to say they are a 9 win team - maybe 10 if they're lucky; which will probably be enough to win the NFC East but that's another story. Giants have been destroyed this year by injuries and cap problems. They have absolutely no depth on defense, their special teams are weak and their best offensive player is going to try to play through the rest of the season with a broken foot. They are where they are right now because of a weak first half schedule and a hot hand by Eli.

Hobo is probably right - but I don't think that's any reason why Katie and Bronco shouldn't enjoy their ride.

Yeah didn't really mean elite in the true sense of the word so probably should've used a different one. I just meant their record and leading the NFC East makes them a upper tiered team and I agree with injuries I'm surprised how well they're doing and the only true elite team in the NFC is GB.

Not that this has much to do with the point I thought I was trying to get across, which was that the 9ers are a legit team, but the answer to your question is Eli Manning. Before him, as pointed out above, you had Brad and Trent in the last 10 years.

There are scads of 2nd tier type guys and lower who made it to the Conference Championship game.

I've watched the Niners a lot this year and I don't think they're a threat to Green Bay, and they will struggle with New Orleans. Any other team in the NFC, they can play with. It's going to be interesting when they go to Baltimore and host Pittsburgh. If they at least split those games, I will start to believe.

I love seeing Alex Smith haters eat crow, he finally has a coach and keeps getting better.

Also pretty crazy that Niners defense have not allowed a rushing TD this season.

I like what you said, but NO lost to your team the Rams, so even if I want to believe other teams will struggle with them, I just can't bring myself to actually think that.

I'm saying the bet is only live if the Niners get a bye (which I think they will) and play at home in the divisional round. then live, I believe the Niners will lose at home.

Lately should be defined but in the last 12 years, Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Eli Manning, first year starter Tom Brady (with largely unimpressive numbers), and first year starter Kurt Warner (with largely impressive numbers) have won Super Bowls. None were even close to elite qb's when they took the field week one that year.

It's one season and he's not the one winning them their games, the ending to the Detroit game excluded. Let's see if he can do this on a consistent basis, season to season, while throwing 35 times a game. Until then, I'm not eating **** and he may just be having a solid season due to a nice schedule and no expectations. David Garrard, among others, have had the same. And now they're unemployed.
