Jazz Offseason Plan

Locke on his pod really trying to sugar coat the trading the pick to get off money angle of things. Lockes always kind of done that, I’m not sure Locke, or anyone is given, as much info under Smith as the Millers, but just with the variety of rumors, I don’t know exactly what they’ll do, but it just seems like a 10% or less chance the Jazz will draft at 30.

It was pretty bad… really makes it out like it’s not a choice… we have to do this or we can’t keep Mike. The other thing he keeps saying is “it’s a good thing”… “it’s what keeps competitive balance in the league so it’s working” … then you look at GS bill coming in this next year and they ain’t getting off salary even though their bill could be 2-3 times what ours is.

It came off as very company man type ****… it is what it is.

Yeah, I mean technically it’s a good thing because it does help balance talent around the league, but Locke was really really really trying to sugar coat just dumping the puck for cap relief is beneficial. If the only thing you dump it for is cap relief it’s not beneficial. Idk if Locke knows something or is just buttering that angle up like he usually would, and the tax is prohibitive especially to a small market like the Jazz, but none of us are so dumb we don’t understand what’s going on lol.

That is insane. Organizations are dumb sometimes. I like Mike but he is not worth that amount of money mostly due to his injury history.
It’s just kind of the market. Other PG are going to be paid plenty, and if we don’t pay Mike someone else will. Tony also hinted during that interview the Bulls have enough to offer Mike a max and are a player. Idk what you do really, 2 years $50 million isn’t ideal or terrible tbh, as long as the 3rd year isn’t a player option, and is a full team option they can drop. Hopefully he plays well next season, stays healthy, and you can trade him if need be next offseason for some assets. It’s very tough to just lose him.

And apparently Mike as well as Royce are Ryan Smiths golfing buddies? It’s always good when players are this comfortable with the owner of the team. There’s a couple further replies as well, I’d guess Royce is safe as safe could be tbh.

What if he doesn't resign and goes elsewhere? It could be a blessing in disguise. The Jazz can go and get a moderately priced PG and head into the season that way.
With Donovan and Rudy the cap is already cooked tbh. I don’t think Donovan’s on board for any down years either. The mistake was spending the assets on Mike instead of waiting a year or two more before blowing assets for better value as Donovan developed. Now you’re going to have to spend more assets and shed salary to keep the dude that already cost you too much.

I agree with you. My big issue is how the superstars have screwed many of the other players in the league while also making it difficult to keep teams together. A few years back the players got together and decided the superstars need more of the pie. Now you have guys making $30-40 million a year. You have two of these stars like the Jazz and now you are talking about dumping good quality players like Joe or Bogie to save money. Then you have to fill your roster with minimum deals because you are going into luxury tax territory.

It just seems harder to keep teams together and guys get over paid if they make an All-star game. Jazz should be concentrating on improving the team roster to make a real run at a championship instead they're taking a step back because they had to let guys go just to stay away from the luxury tax.

If Conley is still playing golf with Smith that seems like a good sign he may be staying
I don’t know on Mike, I was just making the point the players are obviously pretty comfortable with and like Ryan. Also, Mike is going to be back, I’m almost certain of it at this point, unfortunately I do think it’s going to be at the $25 million a year figure.

It’ll be interesting to see how the next CBA goes. As far as the Jazz are concerned I think Donovan is putting a lot of pressure on the organization to win and not take steps back. In the end I think it’s hurting what could be an eventual championship if he would just find some reality in the direction things need to go. Letting the foot off the gas for a year or two can eventually get to a title IMO, if he were willing to commit to that because I do think he can be the best player on a championship team. The Jazz are burying themself in a roster and plan that is going to yield no title, and him leaving, all because a couple bad years would be a struggle in the moment.

This salary **** is about DL and Conley. You can leave Rudy and Don outta this.
