Las Vegas Summer League thread

Alright, so color me somewhat intrigued on this Mathias cat. He’s a way better prospect than Thomas.

His offensive style is exactly our offense in that he’s a guy who can hit threes at a high clip on a high volume but he moves the ball really well and would be perfect for the blender (in a hypothetical world where he was in the rotation). He’s not dead weight being a shooter only on offense with how well he can quickly move the ball, make reads, or quickly put the ball on the floor and make decisions.

Each of his junior and senior years he made the defensive team for the Big Ten.

This is a complete DL troll pickup. DL trades away (another) second rounder for a one-dimensional shooter. JZ waives him as one of the first matters of business. Then if he brings this guy in at no cost but a two-way, who has a few other dimensions to his game and may not be a complete liability on defense.

Take a look in the video above because there’s some good stuff in there.

Doke looks great… makes a few dumb mistakes but I think he’s playable if Whiteside sucks or gets hurt. Forrest is fine… I want more from him defensively. Teague is kinda fun… Mathias likely gets the two way… he was good tonight when I watched but I’ve been really unimpressed. This summer league team is not super fun.

Watched Doke tonight after seeing his impressive 16 for 16 combined back to backs last week on the stat sheet. Put my mind at rest as I’d been worried that the Whiteside deal could blow up in our face with Udoka’s progress. Now I’m satisfied that in spite of his athletic prowess he’s still a year or two away and Whiteside will be money well spent. I think centers probably take the longest to develop .

Elijah Hughes is shooting 29% from 3pt in 4 Summer League games. He shot 21% from 3pt in 5 G-league games last year.

He's supposed to be a good shooter.
A good shooter should be shooting way better than 34% from the college three point line.

His overall field goal% through 3 year in college was 41% btw.

Some of my thoughts on summer league

- I am a Teague fan and want him on a 2 way or on the stars.

- I like Forrest and think he is a good 3rd point guard. He can try to do to much. He has got to cut down on the turnovers.

- Doke is fun to watch but can get lazy a little bit on the floor. I hope Rudy can teach him to challenge shots instead of trying to block everything. That wod leave him in better position to rebound.

Also he is making a case he has a future in the league.

- Morgan needs to go. He doesn't seem to care at all. He is completely indifferent out there. Very frustrating out there.

- Hughes is a dime a dozen type of player. I am frustrated hearing people day this is his first real off-season. He spent all year last year with a bunch of pros. Doesnt seem like he learned anything. I would prefer to use his roster spot on a defensive specialist.

- Brantley is the love hate player on the jazz for me. I love his potential but I hate the way he uses it. Every time I see him dribbling I cringe. His shooting scares the poop out of me. I like his bully ball but that won't cut it in the NBA. He won't be bigger and stronger than everyone else. He has got to get a finesse game.

- I have been a fan of Mathias from day one. He doesn't do the things that lose games. He is just a solid player. Not great but not awful. I want him on the stars or a 2 way.

- richardson is a spaz that doesn't bring anything to the table. I am ashamed I was such a big fan.

And my belief in Hughes is quickly waning. I gave him a lot of excuses because of the weird year, not being able to develop in the G-League, and the injury, but I'm just not sure he has it.

He shot 33% as a senior. Just because his shot is smooth doesn’t mean he’s a good shooter.

I’ve comped him as a poor-man’s CJ Miles but that may have been too generous.

Don’t care about this cat at all. NBA players should be cruising in summer league, even the fringe ones.

We could’ve had either Bane or McDaniels AND Doke. Hughes is junk.

The 2nd 2-way guy likely isnt playing on this team.

He's no where close to as good as THomas, holy ****.

Are teams in the NBA going to let Udoka play and dominate their second units? How many games before they figure out he's shooting in the 30s from FT?

My favorite part of the commentary on last nights game was Sam Mitchell talking about udokas ft form and saying it’s not bad and not broken. Uhhhh sir… it ain’t fixed either.

Udoka likely has 12 months to figure out FTs and improve because while he has looked really good… Whiteside likely holds that position all year if healthy.

Welp, Hughes missed a dunk followed by two missed FTs. Then he badly missed a floater at the buzzer. Not sure what's going on with him, but he hasn't shot well in SL at all.
Yeah, I'm hoping it's just confidence/nerves and he figures it out soon. I know he's a better player than he's shown.

I dont think that's a huge concern for a backup. Are teams really going to let their guys rack up fouls when Udoka is likely playing?

Whiteside is a bit hit and miss with his FTs too... it's a coin flip whether we get him shooting in the 60s or around 50

I think Mathias is the current favorite. I’ve heard two beat guys mention him and think there is some smoke. Likely waiting to see what happens and if someone better springs loose but I think he’s the guy unless they find something else they like. I’d rather do something else.
