Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about. This seriously isn’t a big deal and folks are sharpening the pitch forks. We need a bigger trade to happen because we’re bored, I think, I don’t think we’d be hearing the team won’t do what it takes to win because of a second rounder otherwise. I get they’re short on them but the overreacting is just hilarious to me.

It also seems like people realized the luxury tax was important up until today. Businesses don’t like to spend millions of dollars they don’t have to. Smh
 
So, wouldn’t we have come out ahead financially if we had just: (1) waived Oni ourselves; and (2) sold the 2028 second round pick separately?

If that is the case, how do we twist this as making any sense?

This is a totally minor deal that means nothing, but this is one of those scenarios where the lack of attention to detail and basic critical thinking makes you worried about big deals down the road. It’s more concerning because of what it portends rather than the deal itself.

You’re not seeing the big picture. I get that the tax is rough, I’m actually one of the louder voices in the room about the perils of being in it. The Jazz have been making clown moves on the margins for years and the problems have been compounding. Do you think a 1st rounder and FIVE 2nd rounders might swing a trade? Cuz that’s what the Jazz have burned to offload Derrick Favors, Ed Davis, Tony Bradley, Rayjon Tucker, Miye Oni, and to trade for one of the worst NBA players I have ever seen in just the last two years. This ignores the debacle of drafting Udoka and the inevitable 2nd they’ll use to dump him next year when they could’ve not picked up his option. I’m not sure they needed to pick up Oni’s either.

These things add up. Being that the organization isn’t a luxury market and the hole they’ve dug themselves into, they especially cannot be continuing to mismanage and hemorrhage assets.

Perhaps what this deal will do is prevent us from being able to salary dump Udoka, a relatively larger contract.
 
I think the bigger concern is that we have a cap team who likely lost money when trying to save money. If Andy Larsen is correct in saying that the cash considerations are minimal, the Jazz took a $1M L in trying to save money.

Waiving Oni would have cost us about $2.5 given the cost implications, which is about what you would pay in cash for a pick in the 50's. However, the Lakers essentially executed the same move last week while only paying $1.1 M. You are right that they would have been better off selling the pick.

don't worry, as soon as we give away the first we owed to Memphis from the Conley deal, we'll have our 2025 and 2026 2nd rounders available for trade.
I'm sure FO are saving these two picks for the inevitable Doke salary dump this summer.

2022 first round draft pick to Memphis
Utah's 1st round pick to Memphis protected for selections 1-6 in 2022, 1-3 in 2023 and 1 in 2024; if Utah has not conveyed a 1st round pick to Memphis by 2024, then Utah will instead convey its 2025 2nd round pick and 2026 2nd round pick to Memphis [Memphis-Utah, 7/6/2019]

If Ken is correct (and I'm not sure he is), an advantage of trading with OKC (compared to most anyone else) is that Oni gets his full salary paid, instead of being immediately cut. Maybe that's a parting gift from the Jazz to Oni?
