The Denver series I felt he was scrappy defensively. I didn't see him play in the regular season so I thought that was a nice step in the right direction and something to build on. It just hasn't happened. It sucks but he will never improve defensively and while I like that he takes shots no one else will, I think this year showed he has a hard time grasping when to stop and when to go off.I feel bad that I want to see Clarkson get traded because I really like the guy. He became a Jazz man real quick when he got here, and had a big impact last year. He has obviously slipped...yeah, a lot. But it will still be hard to see him go. I really wish he had gone the other way this year and been more impactful for us. But now I want to see him go and bring back someone who can actually help us.
You only trade Mitchell if he requests a trade no one of his caliber would ever come to Utah or stay past their rookie contract. You can't lose Mitchell. You can however try to rid yourself of Gobert and that hideous contract and lack of offensive abilitiesI don’t think we‘re going to accomplish diddly squat this season in the playoffs. Would also consider trading Mitchell for Giddey and a couple 1st round draft picks, at least one unprotected. Really like Giddey’s size, court vision, defense. Think he’s going to be a franchise player in the near future.
What does Barnes do with his superior size cuz he gets steals and blocks at a rate similar to Bogey and his assy team is even assier on defense when he’s on the court.I think you're underestimating the value of putting more size on the floor. Barnes being bigger/longer will make him a better team defender. Also, I think that House and Forrest are as good defensively on the perimeter as Royce.
Barnes wasnt even a better defender than Royce during his GSW days. He's a passive average defender who is OK. He isnt going to bring Royce things and if you are replacing Royce with him, the team has a higher chance at getting worse defensively than it does at getting better. What does Barnes do with his superior size cuz he gets steals and blocks at a rate similar to Bogey and his assy team is even assier on defense when he’s on the court.
If Barnes is a bogey replacement then fine… if it’s to play alongside of Bogey it doesn’t work the way people think it will.
And as we know the offense ain’t the biggest issue. And I don’t want to **** on Barnes. He’s a good player and a great dude. If they decided they wanted him longer term over Bogey or if the finger thing is going to linger then switch them out. But if you do Royce and Ingles and a pick for Barnes then you will need to trade Bogey out for something as well to replace Royce.Barnes wasnt even a better defender than Royce during his GSW days. We also have House, but I like Butler’s defense. I don’t know if it’s good or great, as he hasn’t played enough to know for sure, but what I do know is his defense won’t hurt a teamThe only trades I can see that really makes any sense to me and bettering the jazz, unless they want to start over is trade JC and Ingles contract for picks, then play Butler and Huges some.
Butler is fine on defense if you are comparing him to JC. He will get better with time. He's done better passing and moving the ball. I think if you take JC off the court and let him cook he might be more efficient and get more folks involved. I'd like to see what he does with regular minutes. If he hits the step back 3 at 35-40% he becomes and efficient 20 ppg guy I think. That is a high mark, but he gets so much separation on it that I think he can do it eventually. He's so good with the ball I'm not sure why the Jazz were so adamant to start the season that he needs to stay in the corner and do nothing. Conley is having trouble getting space... JB can help with a creator if you develop him... why stifle it.We also have House, but I like Butler’s defense. Yup. Jazz got 95% what's needed on his own team just need to be smart and use it properly. Ofc u can dream about how u gonna give almost nothing for something. Smart won't come cheap... OKC wants a first for Kenny. He is a culture guy there and they have enough seconds. Smart has been playing well and the lineup with him as pg actually works pretty well. Neither team is a super motivated seller. I think you could get Kenny with a fake first type of offer but it would need to be kinda real-ish. Just based on the tea leaves left by various insiders in various places.Given how far into this build the Jazz are, how relatively wide-open the path to the finals are (I believe they are, again, relative to most years), and that Mike and Bogey aren't going to be better than they are this year, I think going for it this year is still maybe the best opportunity to do so. Maybe Barnes becomes the super sub if you get him? He does not round out the main unit, he does the opposite, actually.
Barnes or not, if you can rebuild the bench to be a stable of hustling defensive players then that is probably the middle-ground in terms of how to change the roster before the deadline and keeping an eye to the future. Namely, Smart and Kenny who could be serious contributors and fallback main-lineup players (in case of injury, trade, or special lineup). I think you could get both without sending a 1st, Conley, or Bogey. So that's where I'm landing for my wishes this deadline; Smart and Kenny (for Ingles, Clarkson, and non-1st sweeteners if necessary).
Right, my assumption is lifting pick protections for OKC and hoping that some of the Celtics fans chatter of wanting to trade Smart (even specifically mentioning JC in some instances) has some merit. Sending Butler might have to be a part of this but that's fine.Smart won't come cheap... OKC wants a first for Kenny. He is a culture guy there and they have enough seconds.
