I'm watching some of it. Norm Powell seems to fit right in. Covington doesn't look all that high-level to me though. I don't think RoCo would have changed much for the Jazz tbh.

Seems to me that the best way for non-gigantic market teams to compete is to horde picks and score in the draft. The Grizzlies I guess could’ve fooled around for longer with Zeebo, Gasol, and Conley. Instead, they blew it up, built through the draft, and have built themselves a contender overnight.
One can only wonder what could’ve been had we not wasted so many assets on Conley and Favors and instead built wisely through the draft. We take McDaniels/Bane last year and Herb this year and this team is right there with the warriors competing for a chip. What other prospects did we miss out on had we kept our picks instead of blowing them on Conley and Favors?

I have no idea what you're talking about. Grizzlies kept Zeebo until he was 35 and Memphis went 43-39.
Then they kept Conley for two more seasons until he was 31, and Gasol for most of those two until he was 34, muddling through with 22 and 33 wins. Memphis didn't succeed because they quickly blew things up. They succeeded in spite of waiting a long time to blow it up (it helped that they got lucky with the draft lottery when they tied for 8th/9th worst in the league but were able to snatch Morant with the 2nd pick).
Which leads to my suspicion that there's no great rush to blow things up. Most of the same opportunities/pain will still be waiting, almost regardless of the timing of blowing it up. Once you decide to do it, there's plenty of opportunity to build from the ground up as long as you're willing and disciplined enough follow the path now well trodden by Memphis, OKC, Philly, and perhaps others.
People sometimes accuse the Jazz brass of hubris. But it seems to require a whole lot more hubris to assume that we would be competing for a championship this year if we would have just depended on the draft and chosen "wisely." Sometimes a team will get a Desmond Bane, but (much, much) more often they're ending up with Payton Pritchard, Malachi Flynn, or Udoka Azubuike-level players. The Jason Prestons, Jaden Springers, JT Thors, and Isaiah Todds of the world are more likely outcomes than Herb Jones.
To think that the draft is a better route to build around two stars in their primes than through veteran acquisition takes a lot of hubris and self-belief in an organization's drafting abilities. Though some teams have done well in the draft (whether through luck or wisdom, or both), I don't think the wise money would ever be on that as the primary strategy over getting competent vets to fill the key roles in the rotation around the stars.

It all starts with the draft then the roster is fine tuned by trades. No team has won a title in a long time without having a well timed trade to support great draft picks or good draft picks are used to trade for the title contending team like the recent Lakers team that took good players they drafted then made trades with them.
In our case, we always seem to draft well, make a big trade, then fail in making the last crucial trade. It happened in the Stockton and Malone era, and in the Deron/Booz/Okur era and looks like it might happen in the Donovan and Rudy era.

I mean, would we have any chance whatsoever with any number of picks, taking back any salary that we would get Jaylen Brown without trading Don or Rudy?
A 3 headed monster of Don, Rudy and Brown would be a title contender.

I don't think there is any way to get brown without sending either Rudy or DM. Pretty sure they think he is at least on par with Donovan and Rudy, so no way to get him without giving up a star or at least borderline star player. Or giving them a lot of picks and expirings.

That's what I think too. Too bad we don't have all our 1sts or they could be part of the equation too. We just lack the assets.
Brown, Don and Rudy would be a better trio than any team in the NBA.

Yes that would be next level. I would be on board to nearly gut the team if we could assemble that trio. The only concern then would be health.
I had the exact same thought. Then you consider they also got the addition by subtraction with Bledsoe. Unbelievable deal for them. Even if they just got one of Powell or Covington it would have been a good deal for them.

The next three-four years could be epic.
I mean, if Ainge is a true trading genius, what could he do with our assets?
Bojan turned into a 1st or a promising young player?
Clarkson turned into a 1st?
Conley turned into a 1st or a decent young player?
Joe Ingles turned into something of value?
Imagine if we could do most of the above while adding in two 1st rounders of our own and maybe taking back some unattractive money. Could we put together a competitive package for a guy who is reported to be unhappy in Boston?

Celtics are only looking for picks over good players if they’re blowing it up, which they aren’t.
They also aren’t trading Brown for anything less than the two pieces we shouldn’t trade.
We should absolutely trade Mitchell for Brown this off-season.
