What's new

Does anyone still like this team?

I just listened to the podcast and was typing while I was listening. I did my best so here it is for anyone who is interested.

Zach Lowe said he is increasingly of the belief that this current iteration of the Jazz are done.

Tim McMahon said the Jazz miss Ingles on the court and miss his voice in the locker room.

Mahon said Gobert has this terrible tendency of telling the harsh truth publicly at the worst possible time.

McMahon mentions Gobert was set to play against Dallas and was an extremely late scratch due to sudden pain which is what lead to Donovan’s comment.

It feels like a really good chapter of Utah Jazz history is coming to a close very soon. McMahon believes franchise altering changes are coming this summer and nobody is off the table.

Lowe said his expectations are the Jazz fail this postseason. McMahon says it feels like a team that is ready to move on. Lowe compared the Jazz to the Lob City Clippers.

Lowe said the Jazz got so good so fast after Hayward left that they ended up building the team around Gobert’s timetable not Donovan’s. McMahon says he disagrees with that. Mitchell was 22 when the Jazz traded for Conley. Mitchell is now 25 and Gobert is 29. Lowe said the Jazz made the right call going all in with Conley regardless and Mitchell was so good so early which allowed them to do so.

He said it will not be right to look back and say the Jazz messed up with the Conley traded if they lose this year because they very well could have won the championship last year if everything fell right. McMahon agrees. You have to seize the opportunity when you get a chance as a small market. McMahon says Mitchell staying with the Jazz forever is not going to happen. They had a chance to win and they pounced on the opportunity.

If this plays out like they think it will how much does Donovan’s desires factors into changes and if he asks out do they blow it up and reset? Lowe mentions a lot of teams hitting the reset button recently.

The Jazz have traded 6 first-round picks, Grayson Allen and Jae Crowder for Trey Burke, George Hill, Ricky Rubio and Mike Conley. That is a lot. They traded up for Trey Burke when it was Dennis Lindsey’s first draft and he loved Giannis but didn’t have the medicals and wasn’t confident enough to convince the Miller family to do so. Lowe mentions Conley has been lights out and has been great but the total cost to get here finally was a lot.

He said the Udoka Azubuike pick he doesn’t get, never will get and nobody gets it. Desmond Bane is giving other teams nightmares for not drafting him. Imagine if the Jazz drafted Bane there instead. McMahon says the Jazz have had misses on the finishing touches.

There is a universe in where Utah gets it together, has good matchups and makes a run this postseason. Crunch time defense has been a problem.

The biggest mystery of the offseason is what the pivot the Jazz will do. McMahon says to do whatever Donovan wants to keep him happy is a bad philosophy. Mentions again he’s not staying long-term and definitely won’t if the Jazz barely sneak into the playoffs. He says if you trade one (Gobert/Mitchell) you need to just trade both. Ryan Smith isn’t going to want to pay the luxury tax for a team that is competing for a play-in.

Other teams are planning on making a move on Mitchell and Gobert if it all blows up and both are distinct possibilities. Lowe said it is so early still to have to come to trading either one of them. If you trade Gobert and you are not a contender after it is over with Mitchell.

Gobert would prefer to stay in Utah but there is one spot he thinks would be most beneficial to him. They bring up hypothetical Gobert trades and Lowe mentions a few teams based on speculation.

Charlotte for Bouknight, Washington and picks. They’d be hesitant to move Bridges.

Atlanta makes sense and Bill Simmons mentioned them as a possibility when he was on with Lowe.

Toronto is brought up and McMahon says that is one he has heard. A package wasn’t dicussed.

Lowe stops there and McMahon says he is missing a team. The Mavericks. Rudy’s love language is awards and lobs. Lobs, lobs, lobs. Charlotte with LaMelo, Atlanta with Trae and Dallas with Luka. The Gobert and Luka pick and roll would be super effective especially since Luka and Dwight Powell have been so effective.

McMahon has heard internal and externally that Dallas would have significant interest and Gobert would love to play there with Luka. He says the Mavericks would be as or more aggressive as any team. They don’t really dig into a potential package.

Surprised they didnt mention Memphis as a team.

Memphis could give us our pick back this year. They could also give us their pick this year. Golden State's 2024 pick. They have Ziare Williams. A lot of very good to solid trade assets.

None of these are great picks, but there are lot of options and combinations of assets they could give us without giving up much of what has made them great.

Something like this works financially. Memphis gives us our pick back. We can then flip Brooks to someone else, maybe for another late 1st rounder.

Tim McMahon is really good and really reliable. He doesn't just make **** up like some reporters...I trust what he says to be mostly the truth.

IF, IF Donovan definitely wants to leave no matter what, we have to trade him.

“Donovan is not long for Utah” “If Rudy were traded, and that’s if, because he would prefer to stay there”. I mean idk Tim basically went all in on this interview that there’s a real possibility Donovan tries to force his way out THIS summer. Pretty dirty garbage considering the Jazz are hosting the All Star game next season. Donovan cares about one thing. Donovan. Rudy cares about winning, the Jazz organization, and this community. It’s unfortunate after the first couple years that Donovan’s Jazz career is going to end up in a dirty exit, and I’m going to be proven right. I would have rather been proven wrong, but it’s been pretty obvious how much Donovan has changed and what he’s not willing to say anymore. The **** part of this is we may end up having to trade a guy with actual and true commitment to this franchise in Rudy over the douche. Tim on trying to play-cate Donovan to make him happy “I think that’s a terrible approach, listen Donovan Mitchell is not staying in Utah”.

Tim is super tied into the Jazz for a national guy... I think this is the first time I have heard anyone say that everyone is on the table... not everyone not named Donovan.

I think it would be bold... it would look bad in some circles... but it would be the thing to do. Go scorched earth... the fans will get behind an upstart... the fans are less likely to support a 40 win team with a star that is on borrowed time.

lol imagine if DL drafted Giannis. Giannis/Gobert/Mitchell would basically make you the best drafter of all time even if you drafted an Udoka Azubuike 10 times in a row.
Okay but like 6 GMs claim that Giannis was their guy but... yada yada yada. No thanks on that hindsight BS.

The sad thing is that Dallas just doesnt have good assets. I dont think it's possible.
Yeah its like Josh Green, a bad contract, and expiring contract, the could use their pick this year then include it in a trade... but then you aren't getting another pick until 2025 and 2027. Meh

It’ll be interesting to see how Donovan threads this trade demand needle. So worried about PR, but it’s gonna get dirty.

Yep, the only way I see that happening is if Gobert has a really negative playoff series and everyone is basically offering that same meh package.

If we trade both I’d like to trade Rudy to Dallas and see him win a ring. I’d like to trade Donovan to the Knicks raid their assets, and watch NY media and Dolan devour him.

I also loved the part of the podcast where Lowe went off about the Jazz using health as an excuse for their struggles. I'm so sick and tired of the media, players and Quin doing this. Bogeys really good, I get that, but we should be able to beat teams like the Clippers and Hornets without him. Like they said, Memphis is 19-2 without Ja, and the Suns went 11-4 without CP3. All teams have injuries...the Nuggets have been without their 2nd and 3rd best players all season and they have the same record as us. I don't want to hear excuses anymore.

That’s not what he said but I’m not surprised that you’re twisting this to fit your narrative. The sad part is the thesis of your entire argument the past two years is mostly correct but the supporting paper of the thesis is just pure trash.

Donovan is not going to be here long-term. We all know that and I don’t think there is anyone who truly believes he will.

If the off-season comes and we trade Gobert and we are fighting for a play-in spot. There is a great possibility Donovan asks out.

If we get to the off-season and Donovan says it’s me or Rudy at that point you may as well trade both.

Best case scenario is we make a pivot and move Conley or Bogey and give it another shot with Mitchell and Gobert in my opinion. Next best is to go full OKC and trade both.

I do fully think a package we got for Donovan if constructed right would be enough to help us compete if we kept Gobert vs trading Gobert and keeping Donovan.

Basically what we shouldn’t do is trade Gobert and be a mediocre team in Donovan’s prime. Unless we somehow got $1.25 on the dollar for Gobert.

Sad thing is that NYK doesnt have enough assets I want to raid.

There is a sign and trade possibility with Brunson too... not that I want to bring in a win now guy but depending on the contract number that could be an asset we could flip later... they could also get something in a sign and trade for him and send it our way.

I think the best we can hope for with Gobert is probably one decent rookie contract prospect, some bad contracts (unless we are trading with a team who needs to swap their center out and he isnt bad/bad contract, and a first round that will project in the late lottery to mid first round.

My thoughts exactly. Their cupboard isn’t exactly full.
