Latest reporting has the cops standing around for over 40 mins while the shooter slaughtered kids and teachers. Nice job good guys with guns. Go eat a donut.

Is there anything than can be done to protect kids in school from these broken people with murderous intent? Yes!

Will more gun control laws do it? No.
There are 400 million guns in the US. They aren’t going anywhere and people can now make more at home. California has proven that if you pass highly restrictive gun control measures, the guns don’t go away but the new ones are untraceable. The shooter also would have passed the background checks in all the new proposed legislation. Gun control isn’t the answer to keeping kids safe.

Kids being raised by single moms.
Nearly every one of these school shooters grew up without a father in the house. Fifty years ago the United States was still awash in gun but school shootings were unheard of. It isn’t the guns. While the correlation with being raised in single parent households is undeniable, it doesn’t matter because there is nothing you can do about it. We aren’t going to outlaw divorce like the Philippines.

Social contagion.
This too is undeniable, and a thing you can’t stop. We aren’t going to ban 24/7 news channels that thrive on this content. We aren’t going to ban social media. We didn’t have these things fifty years ago and we didn’t have school shootings but the genie is out of the bottle.

Superhero police forces
Expecting police to know everything before it happens or being able to rush in to save all the kids before the bad guy can do any harm isn’t going to happen. Once you have a bad guy with a gun in a classroom it is already too late.

What can be done here in reality?
Schools need to be locked down. My kid’s elementary schools is a good example of doing things right so I know it is possible because I see it. They had 6 foot chain link fences surrounding the perimeter, decided that wasn’t secure enough, and installed 10 foot slatted security fence. All gates and doors are locked when the bell rings. The only way in is through the front visitor’s door which is also locked but there is an intercom with a camera and the school staff can buzz you in. It does admittedly look like a little prison camp but the serious attention to access control is obvious.

This shooter, who was raised without a father, passed all the background checks to purchase the weapon legally, and connected on social media beforehand, was able to get into a classroom by simply walking through unlocked doors. If the administrators for that school and that district had done their jobs, every single one of those little kids would still be alive. The hands of people like The Thriller, who is now desperately trying to point in every other direction, are covered in these kid’s blood.

You are empowered. You are wasting your time if you are moaning about guns, police, mental health, or whatever distraction that won’t do anything. Does your local elementary school look like I’ve described my local elementary school? If not, go to school board meetings and demand they do their jobs. Do not let them scapegoat things like gun control laws they have no control over. Lock the schools down. Our children are invaluable and those trusted with being responsible for them need to act like it.

Nah, i saw proposed legislation that you have to be over 21 to purchase a gun. He wouldnt have passed that and maybe the victims would all be alive if that law was in place.

Main thing to remember though is that guns are always in the right. Guns are virtuous, loving, perfect beings that have the best morals. Dont talk bad about the guns.

I mean some basic regulatory stuff could have stopped this one. The kid went to a store and bought a couple ARs and a **** ton of ammunition on his 18th birthday... so IDK maybe just saying you have to be 21 to buy an AR likely stops this one as I am not sure how this guy gets a gun on the black market or makes one... he waited until he could get one pretty easily. We can't stop all the BS with guns but we could stop this one. If the kid is this messed up he likely doesn't make it to 21 without getting picked up on something.

There are like 5-10 ways basic regulatory laws could be passed in this situation that would have stopped it. Like 21+ is something that 90% agree on right? You could likely have some basic laws passed and then setup some undercover police programs that identify dummies trying to get ARs on the black market. I am guessing it would be fairly easy to identify these types of shooters as I am not sure they could navigate back channels to get an AR. If he had to rob a house to get a handgun at least hopefully he could be stopped before taking 19+ lives.

Guns are objects. They don't have morals. They aren't right or wrong. They simply exist.

Seriously?!? Do you really believe that if that guy had been unable to buy an AR when he went into the gun store and seen all the semi-automatic handguns available to him that cycle every bit as fast an an AR that he would have said "nah, you really need an AR to kill children so I guess I won't kill anyone"? You are delusional if you think that legislation would have prevented this tragedy. You might as well have proposed for the state of Texas to have contracted unicorns who could swoop in at the last moment to stab the shooter with their magic horn. Get real.

There needs to be background checks, including mental health checks on every purchase. Right now in most states private parties can sell to other private parties with no check.

And once you have a background check, the database should be re-reviewed regularly for red flags.

I hate kids being killed, but AR-15s are used in a tiny fraction of annual deaths. "Mass shootings" are a tiny fraction of total gun homicides each year. Suicides account for the largest # of gun deaths. Mental health needs more attention.

Handguns are the primary cause of firearm related deaths in this country. Banning modern sporting rifles will do next to nothing other than give politicians something to talk about.

Gun owners should be required to keep guns secured/locked.

Magazine limits make little to no difference.

Have zero tolerance for bullying in schools, most of these mass shootings were from kids that were abused in school.

Train schools to watch for red flags, and put people with dangerous propensities in treatment centers.

And while we are working to save lives, let's put larger penalties for drunk driving, which causes a horrific number of deaths and life-altering injuries each year. A 2nd DUI should result in permanent loss of license.

Nah... he shouldn't be able to buy any gun at 18... if he can't buy any guns then he has to steal one... every point that you make it harder it will reduce the amount of shootings.
 
I don't have the all teh answers... but when a damn kid can go buy a couple ARs and a **** ton of ammo without much resistance that seems like an issue. Replace handgun with AR if you'd like.

I mean to get a cell phone they at least check your credit right.

Ammo is sometimes hard to come by. I have purchased cases at a time. Literally thousands of rounds at a time.

I've also purchased a large # of guns. A gun purchase along with ammo should not raise red flags alone, but this kid had enough events that better mental health programs in schools could have flagged him.

Background checks should also review social media accounts.
