Trade Rumors Involving the Jazz

The Jazz are weighing trade possibilities with three-time Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert, who NBA sources have pegged as one of Toronto's targets to satisfy its appetite for a starting rim-protector. While there's much debate both around the league and among Utah staffers about whether moving Gobert, the Jazz's true defensive lynchpin, is the most effective avenue to improving Utah's issues guarding on the perimeter, Anunoby would clearly pose as a tremendous addition for any team lacking on the wing.

League sources regularly mention New York's main offseason focus is to improve at the point guard position, but acquiring Utah's other All-Star, Donovan Mitchell, remains highly unlikely. Even if Mitchell were to ultimately request a trade from the Jazz, he still has three full years committed on his contract before a player option in 2025-26. Plus, there's healthy skepticism around the NBA that New York's best offer for Mitchell would trump other teams' pursuits, such as a potential package from Miami that would theoretically center around Tyler Herro plus other salary and multiple first-round picks.

With regard to Toronto I like OG… but getting to the right salary gets really tricky without Trent in the deal… I can’t see them giving up both guys. Would be a good get for us of course. If you could get OG and cap filler plus a first that is about as good as you could hope imo. OG is basically what the highest end outcome could be for Deandre Hunter… who likely never gets that good.

25 year old Donovan Mitchell who is a current 3 time All Star and is top 5 all time in playoffs points per game for players who have played at least 20 games isn't a franchise player?

Not if you want to go deep in the playoffs. He can be shut down or rendered inefficient by bigger, longer defenders. But he's a great #2 guy. He's like Brad Beal or maybe Damian Lillard.

Those guys are still franchise guys. Like if the NBA had a draft of every player and incoming rookie, I think Mitchell would go in the top 30.

Mitchell is definitely a franchise player, just not a very good one (or maybe better said: an incredibly flawed one)

He's also likely better than anyone in this draft

I'd trade Mitchell if I could get Banchero, but that's probably it in this draft class. The reason is that I think Banchero is likely to be a more dominant player, and the Jazz only have a 2-year window before Donovan exercises his leverage in free agency and the Jazz will likely need to trade him.

I don't think a team would give the Jazz the #1 pick in this draft, but #3 might be possible, imo.

Yeah cuz 90% of teams who get the first to third overall pick aren't ready to compete yet and don't want a star who is in the middle of his 2nd contract.

I do that trade to, but not solely for the reason of getting Banchero. It's more to just suck next year and get better slots in the next two drafts where there is currently more projected star talent.

In this situation, Jazz might have to send Mitchell to Sacramento at #4, then move #4 and assets from Sacramento to Houston for #3. That assumes Houston is luke warm on Banchero and likes Ivey. It's a bit of a long-shot.

Or just see if Banchero somehow drops to #4.

I hope the Toronto/OG rumor means that the Jazz are also interested in Tari Eason in the draft. He could be gettable with one of Charlotte's picks.
