2022 Annual Jazzfanz All Time NBA Draft

I still don't understand why their "best year" even matters. We know the players they were. If somebody picks Magic Johnson from a year different than the one where he lined up a center, are we not still going to assume he has the positional flexibility to play anywhere?

That part of it just seems silly to me.

Because neither players nor the game are static. Often there is a significant trade-off in athleticism and shooting ability as the years go by. This is especially true of players drafted in the 80’s and who peaked in the mid-90’s. Their games changed a lot.

This trade off between athleticism (often seen in defense) and shooting changes a lot about how a team would play or be defended.

This and just because someone became a decent three-point shooter later in his career doesn’t mean he was always one. There is one guy who hasn’t been drafted yet who did this exact thing but other parts of his game weren’t there such as scoring ability and playmaking as he got older.

And you drafted him last year :)

I mean, that makes some sense. I just feel that you're doing an all time draft to select the player because what he was or what he was capable of. These teams we are putting them on are unlike any team they ever played so taking their entire prime into consideration, you have a better idea of how they would fit.

AI ain't going to average 30ppg playing with 4 other Hall of Famers. He's going to have to adapt so how many times in his career could he adapt? Summing it up in one season is very limiting.

It's not going to matter in the 2k sim, but it gives an idea of which era of a players career you want.

Bill Russell is the perfect example of why I don't like the best year thing. In any given season, sure, he was great, but it's really the fact that he has 11 rings that matters.

Exactly. Whether he was playing with Cousy or Havlicek, it didn't matter. He was on stacked teams, but he still adapted and guarded the post in probably the best era of big men.

I think there’s definitely room for imagination because these contests require that. The years requirement just creates a stronger basis for reasonable arguments about what a player is or is not.

If there is a year requirement, I think that should be required at the end. I took Wilt first. He's a big man who dominated in a few different ways. He averaged 50ppg but he also led the entire league in assists another year.

I shouldn't have to label my year until I know what team he's playing with.
