Rudy got back a lot of most likely mediocre picks and mediocre players.

Donovan hopefully gets at least lottery picks and lottery talent.

You're correct about pick quality over quantity, of course. But the timing of the picks and their protections are critical as well and I think this is where Utah won that trade.

Rudy is 30. At the end of next season, he will be 31. As much of a freak as Rudy is, I don't see his game aging well when his athleticism starts to slip and there isn't much he can contribute elsewhere beyond defense so that his contract doesn't become an albatross. Unless he signs an extension, KAT is going to be a FA in '24. Also, as we've seen with Brooklyn, team chemistry is a fickle thing and Houston now looks like their goose just **** Fort Knox. Ant is only horse really on that team with a measure of control and relative certainty, but I don't think he can carry a team by himself. Let's also not forget the Wolves are just, in general, a historically bad franchise.

Aside from the quantity that Ainge got, there is a certain probability that more than one of those picks will hit. If so, good for us. In that sense, the quality is there.

Regarding Don, I agree. A lottery team would be better for us, but let's see how it plays out.

Rudy will be the same player he was last year as he will be at 34. His athleticism is already gone.

Wallace wasn't when in the same position as Rudy.

I'm just saying there's more athleticism to Rudy's game than folks think, with his reaction and ability to trail-and-tail. Dude's wingspan and size makes up for a part of his game, but it's not whole reason. That said, if he's still raking DPOYs at 35, it wouldn't surprise me.
 
If this Wolves experience works, it's possible that the picks are never good regardless of Rudy's regression. Towns and Edwards could be top 40 players for the next 5-7 years. And if I were them, I would be looking to trade Russell's massive expiring and any other remaining assets to add a 4th big piece. I mean, why not? They just paid a ransom for Gobert, and Edwards is on a rookie deal for a couple more years.

I'm hoping it doesn't work. I hope they implode and our picks turn great. I would hate that for Rudy because he's a good dude, but at the end of the day I care about our Jazz most.

They wouldn't be amiss getting a few 3D wing role players and a PG. That said, I don't hate the concept they're trying to run with, but I don't see them having much more success than we did.

Bad teams generally don’t go all in on trades for guts like Donovan. So I’m not sure you get a bunch of unprotected picks from teams like NY or Orlando. I’d rather have unprotected picks far out from teams that assume they will be good… just like the Lakers, Clips, Nets have done. If we wait until trade deadline I can see us getting pick a pick from a struggling team that may project to be lotto, but do you really think we move Don right before Ryan’s AS game? Also if you wait all the way until end of season you are looking at a lotto pick from another team but our own pick could be top 5 if we do a deal… keeping Don means we land in the 12-18 area… it would cost a couple picks to move up that far and sometimes teams just won’t trade those picks at all.

I just think it’s better to resolve this sooner than later… start with a total reset and give Hardy a chance to establish a culture. I doubt Don plays nice and is super committed given the summer of rumors and the fact we will be mediocre next year.

Windhorst says Nets expected a bidding war for KD and that hasn't happened. Teams have made their offers and they haven't felt the need to increase them. Nets raised the price when Gobert deal went through, but the rest of the league doesn't seem to want to pay that price.

About Mitchell - the Jazz are telling teams they don't intend to trade him and Mitchell will not force any action... right now.

The biggest mistake this franchise made in the last ~10 years was not having the guts to tank after Deron left. Remember all of the fun of the Jefferson years? That’s what this feels like to me, except we don’t have any other promising players in the pipeline which creates an even stronger argument to getting on with the split.

It would probably be like that with any star we pick up in the draft. A lot of these rumors are old media spreading bs.

Donovan, if anything is going to want to show out this year without Rudy stealing the spotlight. It helps raise his value, if anything.

Please stop pretending like we know what Minnesota is going to look like in 5/6/7 years from now. Nobody knows and that’s the beauty of getting those picks so far out.

They will probably still be a good team.

They have team control over Edwards for 6 more years at least.

They have team control over KAT for 5 years.

They have team control over Gobert for 4 years.

They got Jaden McDaniels for 6 more years.



Even if Gobert falls off, they have so many ways to pivot and augment their team. This is the kind of trade that sets them up for long-term franchise success.
