I honestly only get downgraded by one or two posters. Mostly up. And I’m pretty sure he’s never given me a thumbs down, like ever before today.

Obviously you're being hyperbolic by saying "there are no ways to improve", but there are a lot of ways to improve a team. The draft isn't the only way to improve. I would feel differently about Don+Gobert if 1) I believe the roster that was just put together was optimal 2) the flawed roster played to their potential and 3) if tanking wasn't a permanently available option. The results are what they are, but by no means do I think it was representative of the potential we had. It's definitely not a "we did everything we could" type of situation.

Change the coach, make better moves on the margin, make a good trade, don't use the MLE on a guy who you have to pay to get rid of a year later. There are a lot of things you can do to get better. Basically, all the the Jazz did horribly were still able to be done better and improved the team. Tanking is permanently available option whereas having Don+Rudy at the same time is a special opportunity. I know, it all seems unlikely. But if/when we tank there's a long way to get back where we were, and there's no guarantee that when we get out of the other side it's going to be better. For as difficult as it is to retool, it is also difficult to find a Don and Rudy at the same time.

Perhaps personal issues made it impossible to continue anyways, but that makes the FO blundering even more devastating. I think the arrogance to sit on their *** for the past two years and not acknowledge any kind of weakness/failure is the biggest organizational failure I can remember as a Jazz fan. It will never sit right with me, and I cannot believe how many justified the inaction.

I mean yeah, but the real trick is to get a great player low in the draft. Rudy and Donovan were absolute steals but there were reasons that they didn't go top 5. Rudy's offensive limitations and Donovan's measurables. Ideally you can get a top 3 stud an get a later round steal to supplement them.

Also you can't draft Bagely when you get that shot.

Looking at 2013 Gobert draft we were extremely lucky to walk away with anyone of worth. That draft sucked outside of Giannis and Gobert. Thats what sucks about the draft you can land those high picks, but that doesnt guarantee anything. Nobody drafting top 3 got a decent player and no other team would have done better that year with a top 3 pick. Every year is a crap shoot, you have players that are universally thought of us worth the pick and bust. Have the Jazz board would have traded anything to draft Jabari Parker. Right now in the NBA there are two #1 picks from not too long ago that are getting very little interest.

I wonder who we would have taken had we had the #1 pick the year of Mitchell. Tatum ended up being solid but he was not considered a #1 pick almost everyone had Fultz ahead of him. I wonder whats the highest we would have taken him. We got pretty lucky to get him, which is what it takes. Outside of a few #1 picks like Lebron, Anthony Davis, Tim Duncan, Shaq type #1 players its so far from any kind of guarantee. Even some years like that you get a Greg Oden or maybe even Zion if he doesnt get healthy. It was so much easier when players stayed 4 years in college.

Everything you just said is true. Want some more bad news? The Jazz just traded away one beloved franchise cornerstone, are in the middle of trading the other, they’re gonna walk away from both deals with an INSANE amount of picks, and a rebuild still might fail.

However, Danny Ainge knows something that is very hard for a lot of Jazz fans to stomach (myself included), and that is this depressing fact: The only, and I mean ONLY way the Utah Jazz are ever going to win a world championship, is by absolutely striking gold in the draft and landing a Giannis, Lebron, or Tim Duncan like player. Hell, they might need to land 2 of them.

There simply is no other way for this franchise.

I have no problem with tanking and grabbing a bunch of picks/young players with upside. I enjoy it. I think we could have reloaded around these guys but Mitchell and Gobert didn't like each other so it was time to move on. Gobert was getting too old to build around and too big is contract. Mitchell just doesn't seem interested in staying long enough to build around and maybe not interested in playing hard both ways. I think we had plenty of ways we could have gone but this is a decent option, maybe the best option.

We actually were very close though with this run. We just didn't quite build the support players well enough and we didn't get lucky with health and other stuff. Even with a great team you need a lot of luck!
 
Totally agree what you say. Memphis have been very lucky to land JA but even with him, they are still far from beeing a NBA winner. 2 great players are the base and you have to be clever and add good players around. This is where we failed. Don and Rudy are great but around them they did not put the right guys or have been unlucky with injuries.... going for full rebuild through draft is a long process and without any garantee of sucess. You have to get a lot of luck with your picks. RE-bluiding through FA market is for me more safe. But in this case, you need to keep Don.
Let's see what will happen in the coming weeks.
 
If we keep Mitchell and want to win around him we'll have to make some major trades with all the picks we have. I'm not a huge fan of that. I guess we could try to clear a ton of cap space for next off season and tank for this season. Then try to sign two big free agents and trade for some really solid players with our crappy picks. Plus still have the picks for the future. But what are the chances we sign anyone decent, fairly low from a historical perspective.
 
I think things will be clearer when KD gets traded. If we got 4 1st rd picks and 4 players for Rudy imagine how much haul the nets would get in return. Then everything will move fast. I bet DA already did his homework on this

Is a Donovan Mitchell trade coming?

First, there was the Utah Jazz trading Royce O’Neale that sparked the Brian Windhorst memes. Then, Rudy Gobert got sent to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

It seemed quiet on the Mitchell front … but then? ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported this: “After previously shutting down inquiries on moving All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell, rival teams say the Utah Jazz are showing a willingness to listen on possible trade scenarios.”

Oh boy. A full teardown? Maybe that’s the right way to go now.

the next best thing after legitimately contending is hope. all these garbage teams with good young players have hope. those teams drafting in the 13-22 range - eff that.
