In 1985 Mike Mitchell and Kareem Abdul Jabbar averaged 22 points per game. Five year stretches are similarly arbitrary.

Advanced numbers show the two are no where near each other in how they achieved those numbers.

One season comparison? Cute.....

Please tell me these vast difference numbers.

Oh, and be sure to take into account that Curry got to play with Monta Ellis who averaged 24ppg when he played with Curry. And Curry got to play with Klay Thompson for 3 of his first five years. And Draymond Green. And Andre Iguodala.

Through their first 5 seasons, Curry and Donovan are very comparable.

Curry's EFG% ever since his first 5 years is an absolutely bonkers 59.7%. The primary reason? He started taking more threes. A lot more threes.

Curry's 3PA per 36 minutes for his first 5 years: 4.7, 4.9, 6.0, 7.2, 7.8

Since then? 8.9, 11.8, 10.8, 11.1, 12.5, 12.7, 13.4, 12.2.

Does Mitchell have a similar jump in him? Sadly, probably not, because he's already been averaging 10.0 3 attempts per game the last two seasons, in which his EFG% jumped from a 50.4% average his 1st 3 years to 52.7% (His first three years he averaged 7.3 3 attempts per game). Curry had that potential to make a massive leap in EFG% because he was one of the best 3 pt shooters of all time not taking enough 3's in his 1st 5 years (a career 42.8% 3 pt shooter compared to Mitchell's 36.1%). Mitchell has already been taking a ton of 3's.

Curry was a lot more efficient. despite dealing with injuries in his first five years, he was at about 60% TS while Donovan was at about 55% over that time. that is the difference between average and excellent - it's a huge difference. and again, Curry did that despite nagging ankle issues he couldn't shake - it was obvious that if he could ever maintain his health (i didn't think he would, tbh) he would explode and sure enough he did. you simply can't compare the two.

I posted them already. EFG+ and TS+ are pretty stark. Mitchell's EFG and TS were slightly below average his first five years. Curry's is off the chart his first 5 years.

He just didn't shoot anywhere close to as many 3's as he should've on a per possession basis. Once he did, it propelled him to one of the greatest players of all-time status. Mitchell's already been shooting a high volume of 3's (and obviously isn't in the same stratosphere as Curry in terms of 3%).

nobody should ever compare donovan mitchell to steph curry. curry is arguably a top 10 player of all time. donovan is very good - he will play in a lot of all star games, but likely won't finish his career in the top 100 of all time.

you just highlighted why TS% is a superior stat to eFG. what his injury limited was his athleticism - his TS% jumped so much once he got healthy because he was able to get to the line. his FT rate jumped by about 50% from his first four seasons to the rest of his career. you can't have a complete picture of offensive efficiency if you ignore a guy's ability to shoot and make FTs.

That actually hurts your argument. Don, who is a great offensive weapon, probably isn’t scoring as much his first couple years if there were better offensive options on the team. Ellis took shots and opportunities away from Curry.
