I agree that going into tank mode, buying low on dudes that have upside and may have flamed out with another team is a great approach though. Sexton at a bargain number would rule.

I think getting Sexton before trading Donovan might aid in bluffing about retooling when it’s really more of a straight play at asset accumulation.

Why would Charlotte want RW? And why would LA not take that deal? In any case, I'd be on the phone with them if we were to land RW and try to extract something out of that deal. You just add an additional year of contract with Hayward. Rehab Hayward's value then ship him off somewhere. Have this be the perpetual draft pick fund.

Do a follow up deal for THT + draft stuff. Vando, Clarkson, young player from Knicks… Butler?
 
So, RW+THT+Nunn can take back Mike, Bojan, Beasley and PatBev. That's pretty good value for Lakers right there. We can add Balmaro or Kessler or Vanderbilt (I wouldn't want the latter, though). Obviously, adding those guys means it's '27 and '29 unprotected, but for LAL that might be their best-case (unless they get Kyrie) trade, and they are probably content with a decade of **** if it gives them a ring or two.

Only reason Charlotte does it is to get off of Hayward’s salary since Westbrook is expiring.

That’s crazy. I’d offer them that swap for a distant protected first rounder or a pick swap. Or all their second rounders. I honestly believe you could deal off Hayward for something else later.

I’d do it but do it for an unprotected pick only and preferably a 2026 one, if they still have it.

I’m not precisely certain who they’d want of our vets (they could take almost all of them if it’s all about winning, or take back as little as possible if it’s about saving money, or anything in between), but if it’s me Bolmaro and Kessler are staying. Might be irrational on my part but I really like both of them a lot and can see them being useful rotation players on the hopeful, eventual contender if they develop like I think they can.

LA has a weird situation. NOLA has the right to take their ‘24 OR ‘25 1st, so they could potentially trade a ‘26 pick, it just wouldn’t be tradable until that situation is figured out.

But your question did spark the realization that LA should be able to swap ‘26 either way, so that sparks another thought.

Jazz/Knicks: Donovan to Knicks
-‘23/‘25/‘27/‘29 super (duper?) swaps
-‘24/‘26/‘28 unprotected
-‘23 Mavs pick
-their worst salary matching players, if they get any youths then they are ammo to LA

Jazz/Lakers: whoever the Lakers want
-‘26/‘27/‘28 super swaps
-‘29 unprotected

Some **** like that. I’m ****ing crazed AF. The basic ideas here are:

-Jazz assuredly secure a pick every draft, even if they convey a pick to OKC and even if the Wolves keep their pick in ‘29
-in every year they have at least one additional unprotected pick from another team, sometimes more
-in all years but one they also get super swaps to juice the value of their picks.

Yeah, I mean, if we get like a total of 19 1st round picks from 2023-2031, at least 7 of those have to be NBA players, right? And at least 3 have to be really good NBA starters/6th men types, right?

Even if the Jazz don’t have good luck, with enough picks and swaps they will trip and fall into good players.

They’ll probably pick up some 1sts along the way renting out cap space, rehabbing players, and flipping them.
 
Super swaps..lol..how about super duper swaps that convey "optionally", so if you think it will be better two years from now, then opt in later. Lol.

Yeah, the numbers I gave was basically worst case imo. 19 picks in the next nine drafts and one of them has to be a stud, I’d think. I’d hope. You get one stud and another 18 picks, I think he helps raise the level of play of those dudes and chances they develop into damn good players as well.

Something I just learned is Charlotte owns the Jazz’s ‘23 2nd rounder. I would really like that one back since it’s basically a late 1st rounder in a supposedly loaded draft.

Flipping Westbrook for Hayward and getting more assets out of it would be wild because if there’s any half-decent veteran that deserves the pain of a tank year it’s Hayward. I also agree he could be rehabbed and flipped pretty easily.
