Beverley to Lakers for THT and Stanley Johnson

A couple of fun facts. THT has a 40 point game to his credit in the Association, is part of the Mini-van, Naz and Matty Ice progression at Iowa State and was drafted in the second round after Paschall and Justin James. Johnson was drafted one pick after Muday.
Where did Mudiay end up?

Could be that Danny loves him and there was no way that keeping Bev around made sense. He is not the kind of locker room guy you want when you are dumping all of your talent. Getting potential for Bev might be as good as it gets. And add me to the list of folks who say there was no way Bev gets you a first rounder.
I don't remember anyone ever saying Bev was going to get you a first rounder. Maybe I'm not remembering correctly, but the most I remember reading on here was two seconds.

Ahhhh so we got a guy who isn't close to being worth what he's paid? And we got no other asset to speak of? cool

We don't have to squeeze every deal... I get that. Its still fair to say we didn't get enough here or that maybe there is something else afoot. Why do this deal now with the Donovan stuff going on if it was simply about getting a guy who isn't worth the money he's being paid this year or next?
He doesn’t believe in him and thinks he’d have to play way better than he has prior to even be worth his contract yet here he is white knighting for the deal lmao.

Royce ****ing O’Neale netted us a first. I think we could have gotten one around the trade deadline with maybe some bad salary attached.

I mean, of course there is something else afoot. Is there something else afoot with the Lakers? I doubt it. But I could be wrong.

Like I've said plenty of times already, this is 100% why you do it. Show the Knicks you have absolutely no shame and are going to lose hard, even if you keep Mitchell. The Knicks have to have some level of belief that Utah doesnt want to completely bottom out with Mitchell on the roster. Maybe they think if Utah sinks that low, Mitchell will demand a trade and potentially lower his value. Utah (potentially, other moves still have to be made) is showing they will go that low and the next step is to show they dont care if it's an awkward situation.

Also, let's not ignore Stanley Johnson, who is coming off the best year of his career and is just 26 years old.

And IDK if THT is a great talent, but he has a level of intriguing physical talent. You are simply wasting the benefits of fielding a horrendous team if you arent taking some more out there gambles on physical talent.

Wait we spending $11M next year and trading a vet a few teams have rumored to like to send the Knicks a message we aren't afraid to lose... and me thinking a deal with the team you just executed a deal with is a stretch... k.

Dont Lopo me. You can read the entire post, I didnt say that's the sole purpose of the trade.

I mean sure... you wrote three sentences and started with the side point...

Stanley Johnson - whatevs

THT - Fine flier to take if you give up nothing and get a lil sumthin for your trouble.

There you go.

People lol'd me when I told yall NAW was a salary dump too... its fine.

And/or:
-That he's irrationally high on THT (which he can do) and bit on a "deal"
-This is a down payment
Oh I'm sure he is higher on THT (or Utah's evaluation team as a whole is). The reports are that DL/Zanick really liked him during the pre-draft process.

This is not a down payment at all. That I'm 100% certain of.

And Patrick Beverly was 100% going to bitch and complain if he was left on a tanking team that was in limbo with their super-star.

Its just wild to me that people think I got a tinfoil hat for laying out a situation where two parties got together and discussed a much bigger deal that isn't possible right now... so to show real interest and intent they did part of a deal and will hopefully complete the rest of the deal later... but if not both parties are satisfied with the part of the deal they did.

If this is a deal they liked they could do it in a month... why do it while talking with NY on Don? Why burn a contract on a guy you could use in a Don deal to another team... Cleveland for example was a team that had Bev interest and has registered Don interest. Why now when you aren't getting a pick of any sort?

He was gonna be gone. I don't think that's really in question by anyone. Jazz had no reason to keep him, the issue is that what the Jazz facilitated for the Lakers (the best player in the deal, the exact type of player they need, AND a salary dump) vastly outweighs what the Jazz got for a rebuild. We took Stanley Johnson so the Lakers saved that much more money on the deal, but sure, maybe he's finally turned a corner. Not a great bet. Maybe a guy who just had his worst season at year 3 (and immediately after he got paid) and has an awful contract (UFA when it's convenient for him while on a tanking team) is... what? That's what I'm hung up on. I don't get the upside. He plays well and leaves or he sucks and the Jazz just spent $22 million in opportunity cost. Furthermore, his contract structure and general range of basketball value makes his Bird Rights not very useful, so even if he plays well, I'm not sure what he nets in a mid-season trade.
