What's new

Could you / would you parlay Westbrook?

What has a higher chance:

Ben Simmons back and mental health returns to normal and he is very good again

Lonzo Ball's knee recovers and he is very good again.
Lonzo and its not close for me. The downside is Lonzo sits out and hangs around the team... the downside on Simmons is so much worse.

The guy likely has some mental health issues... his biggest issues imo are he's a dick and he doesn't really like playing basketball... he likes being famous. Ever tried to get someone to change that doesn't want to change?

I would need 3 picks... its 100% dead money to me. I would hate the side show associated with rehabbing his value. He's not someone I'd want in my locker room. Even at three picks I'd be pissed we did it... how much money would I have to give you to have treatable Cancer?
Simmons is DONE as an NBA player. When will people learn?

Even ignoring his bad back (and you should never ignore bad backs on bigs), he wants to be a point guard who dominates the ball but won't shoot. That won't fly anymore in 2023. He's made it clear that he won't change or develop his game for anyone or stop shooting with the wrong hand.

Hardest of hard passes.

He's playing positive basketball right now....

If you told me we traded for Lonzo and got no assets for doing it... I'd be like "not my best use of space but fine". Anything less than 3 picks on BS and I'd probably have to check out for a while.

So why doesn't the Nets just wait for Westbrook to be bought out then go get him wihtout having to trade Simmons? Is that not possible?
Because they want off of Simmons contract. They would likely waive Westbrook after the deal.

Two unprotected firsts plus a swap this year to get the better of the BKN/PHI firsts?

Kinda I guess... and they baby the **** out of him because any criticism and he shuts down... "positive basketball" still makes him a huge net negative when you figure his contract and the other stuff that comes with him... 3 picks or get the hell outta my face.

Do both. Any chance we could do a three-way that sends Clarkson to a team and gets us back Ball and some other kind of draft compensation?

Stahp... we aren't desperate.

My wife has SO MUCH experience with this. Yeah, good times.

I'd do it for 1 unprotected and a protected one and DFS

I actually don't think he likes being famous at all anymore. That is part of his anxiety and playing on a team with championship expectations has been crippling when it comes to getting his confidence back. On a team with no expectations he can go out there and actually play through his struggles without feeling like he is letting his team down and get back to being the aggressive player he was in the past. He was a great player just a couple years ago and is still a solid player. I really think he can be a Draymond Green caliber of player for us.

they can't aggregate DFS cuz that trade went through... I forgot about that... Bridges is off the table... Cam Johnson and 2 unprotected picks and Ryan has to give me $1M a year that Ben is on the team... I also get to make one minimum FA signing this offseason of my choice.

Can we get Mikal or Johnson along with Simmons for Westbrook? If it's Mikal I'll send a pick maybe two as well.

He likes being cool... he may have some anxiety but that was also used as his crutch so he could get paid not to do his job. His knee and back "soreness" are also excuses not to do his job. He's either completely broken or he is completely unmotivated to play... you can decide which is worse.

I’ll even take Harris back with Simmons if the two picks we got were the 2029 Dallas unprotected first and the 2029 Phoenix unprotected first plus the swap this year.

If Mikal is the sweetner that changes things but the rumors are he's a keeper. Johnson I could see but he needs a contract extension. Simmons would be best served in a complete rebuild/tank. We are a one year tank and reassess type situation.

If you are a multi millionaire how much money would I have to give you to have treatable Leukemia? That is the price I want for Simmons.

Rehab Simmons' value. Give it a year from now. Either he's good and you want to keep him or... imagine if you even could get a return of 75% of what his value used to be? Or even 50%? That's a huge return. Obviously there's risk with him not regaining his value, but that'd be huge to parlay Simmons into any kind of possible return of his previous value. It'd be humongous getting that at the cost of a guy we were going to buy out.

If we trade for Simmons and get compensation, we theoretically have acquired the assets to dump him at any time or close to it. That could always change with the market, but going forward there are more teams with cap space meaning more teams willing to take him in a salary dump. But every year we have him, his negative value as a contract gets less even if he doesn't improve as a player. For example, we eat the cost next year, meaning we can't use the cap space....but the following year his contract is less negative and if we wanted to dump him it should take less value than what we got him for. We've gained value in that process, albeit at the loss of our cap space. If he actually improves as a player, we've obviously gained even more value. Cap space only matters if we use it, and we can always trade him if we need to use it.
