What's new

Game Thread Mar 05, 2023 05:00PM MT: Jazz at Thunder

Added to Calendar: 03-05-23

Man if only we’d found a way to lose that OT game we’d be in great shape.

Like I said, the benefits are nice....
It's very possible there won't be any benefits.

A war chest of assets doesn't help either if you refuse to consolidate it.

Everyone should read all the replies to this tweet by Tony. It's obvious the tank-happy armchair GM's, feeling all giddy and superior right now, make up a tiny minority of the fanbase. Most people are mad because they actually like basketball, not equations and probabilities.

Where the **** have you been? Good to see you.
Trying to distance myself from a long offseason that made my obsession with basketball/team-building worse than ever and from the compounding fury I had about the team not tanking right out of the gate.

Shorter answer: Going to school/homework and stuff.

I would rather have avoided rushed, shameful tanking (rather than just organically sucking through thoroughly nuking the roster of NBA talent), but with where we are at I am hoping Kessler puts up eight 3s a game and the three other NBA players left on the roster miss half of the rest of the season to "injury".

As far as parity goes this has been one of the best seasons in recent memory. Very little tanking teams.

We quite honestly won’t be bad enough to keep our pick next year. I don’t see Lauri/Walker plus a **** ton of cap space and a top-10 pick not making the playoffs next year.

Eh...parity in the regular season maybe, but that's also somewhat of a product of so many teams not caring much about the regular season. It may end up biting some of them in the ***, but the NBA regular season just isn't highly competitive because teams don't care too much where they place. Most if not all of the competitors are just trying to get through it and not win every night. I've said this many times before, it's not just the incentive to lose (tanking) that causes a bad regular season. It's a lack of incentive to win. There is more incentive for the very best teams to coast and put as little effort in as possible while still making the playoffs. Nobody is going to care about the Nuggets and Grizzlies finishing 1st and 2nd, for example, or if they don't. It's the playoffs that matter.

I will say, the Kings and Knicks are really pulling their weight. I wish the NBA promoted teams like them more (yes I said that about the Knicks). The engagement of their fanbases and the desire for those teams to win every single game. For the majority of teams, it's either 1) the game doesn't matter or 2) I wish we would have lost. But for the Kings and Knicks, two teams not really in the title picture, it feels like life or death every time they play. When it's not about the big picture, it's about winning that night and it's really fun to watch.

I'm not going to flood this thread with the extent to which tanking helps, but if the Jazz were to try every game the incentive is....they get into the playoffs and get clapped? Maybe that's worth it to some, I can't decide for them. But in today's NBA, it's about the championship and nothing else. That is the mentality of teams and players.

How do you tank "right out of the gate" if you have an All Star starter and a dude who's among the top rookies?

You don't. That just doesn't happen, and that's what makes this **** even harder to comprehend.

You complete the Laker trade that Tony said was on the table that was Bojan and good expiring players (I don't remember specifically, but probably Beasley, Vanderbilt, and Clarkson) for Westbrook and an unprotected first before the season started.

There's the armchair GM superiority complex I've come to expect. Nice.

You're not some mastermind who sees into the future. You're a dude who hopes his team loses.

That's it.
I'm just a bigger purist than DA is about his own obvious plan to tank the hell out of this season.

No, there is just obvious rewards in a one season tank where we aren’t going to be serious contenders. What helps us more in the future? A play-in game or getting the 8th best lottery odds?

I disagree. MJ era was all about winning, now it's much more about making as much money as possible.
