2023 NBA Draft Megathread

They had Jalen at 17… not really a glowing endorsement. Mathurin at 10… etc.

I really don’t care if they watch more basketball than us. I don’t really know how to put this correctly but they’re no better than any of us on here.
I’m probably splitting hairs, but they’re better than us, but I wouldn’t say the gap is very sizable between these guys and a given board’s resident expert (since a lot of these cats are just lovers of the game).

The biggest difference is plugged in people’s ability to create a mock draft. The talent evaluation, though? IDK.

They were one of the first iirc... not that they had him the highest. They've had several guys that I heard there first... then went and checked them out... then they rose.

You've been on here telling me if I don't get Flip its because I don't watch him... these folks do more than watch... they study the draft. They may not be better evaluators but they have certainly studied the material.

I really don't care what people's opinions of these guys are... there are a lot of experts... all of their boards look like poop after the results... simply shared the draft and thought it interesting that 5 draft nerds passed on Flip for the entire first round.

For the record, Olynyk is ****ing good and how people can’t separate the game from the box score is kinda wild to me. That kind of spacing, PASSING, and grit on defense at his size is not a common combination of attributes.

If its known that Flip has the chops to play point Center (and really muck up the game for the opposition by being a huge pain in the ***) then my opinion changes on a dime.

I think as a group here we could put together a better big board than they could. Maybe we should look into doing that. Guys here have had some really nice hits… Cy really liked Kuzma, I think he also was higher on Donovan than others, HH really liked Bane, etc. One big hit like those in the 20’s far outweighs multiple misses.

They had Kessler lower last year than they have Flip this year. It doesn’t mean dick.

Speaking of big hits contrary to the conventional wisdom and Kessler: at a couple of points in the big draft thread this year I raised the question of why no one was talking about Kessler.

I was also a loud bitch about Jimmy Butler and Franz Wagner.

Kuzma is really my elite take because he was considered not worthy of being drafted when I was hyping him up.

I was early on Donovan, but he had already been talked about as a 20s something pick.

I remember. I had Paolo at #1 months before anyone else, etc. That’s what I’m saying. People acting like we’re some nobodies.

I still remember when the Franz stuff was like "is he even athletic enough to play in the NBA?"

Overall, I feel like you have A LOT more hits than misses.

To circle back to Flip, a lot of the criticism he gets is "oh he's just Kelly Olynyk" but I've been watching Kelly Olynyk this year and the dude is ducking good and he looks like he can barely move at times.

If Flip is a taller longer more advanced at a younger age Olynyk who can actually rebound, why is that a bad thing unworthy of a teens consideration pick?
For me every draftee has "ifs" and "buts". When you take a guy there is a chance the ifs and buts don't work out and they are out of the league. My thought is to take swings on guys that when the ifs and buts work out you have a starter with valuable tools. You can fill in KO types without having the ifs and buts. Finding a Jaden McDaniels, Mikal Bridges, Ty Haliburton, OG Anunoby is harder and the premium in FA dollars or trade value to get them is often prohibitive. So in the draft if you have a 5% chance at finding a guy with the more valuable skillset... then take that swing over a guy who might have a 30-40% chance at being a quality rotation big. In the 20s if you don't feel there are any 5% gambles... by all means go after the Flip type prospects. In the teens aim higher.

As awesome as KO is... if someone had offered a first for him... he would be wearing another jersey. That is a fully formed and reasonably paid KO. Flip could be more than that... but he could also not be the shooter KO is and not have the other crafty stuff KO does that make it work. If you think he is some version of KO then you should not be taking him in the teens. If you think he could be more than that... by all means draft away.

It was wild. I thought I might be crazy cuz watching the tape he shattered the screen jumping off of it and all people saw was some white guy. Dude obviously can ****ing ball. Has the juice, plays the right way, feel for the game off the charts.

Whenever you can get that Ingles quality where a dude is dogged on because they don’t look the part, grab those dudes and scoop up the benefits.

I understand this comes on the heels of a conversation about Flip, but I just don’t see that with him (… yet?).

Sure... I don't think KOC even archives his draft guide. Lots of swings and misses my fried.

I was a little off of Franz because of one tournament game where he was awful and looked so afraid of the moment. Not a major whiff cuz I still had him about where he was picked... draft is an inexact science... gonna have some good calls and bad calls.

Lol remember when Chad Ford got caught changing his rankings for drafts years down the line?
Cuz dudes like @Elizah Huge couldn't handle an "expert" being wrong.

Actual NBA front offices selected James Wiseman instead of Lamelo Ball... Anthony Benett was a #1 pick... Nikola Jokic went in the second round... discrediting a site or a group based on a few bad calls will leave you with no sites or groups.
