Starting PG?

I didn't read the entire thread. So is anyone seriously thinking Keyonte can be the starting PG? I saw some convo about that somewhere. He didn't do any play-making in college, did he? Why would we want to be pounding square pegs into round holes. Is DL secretly spreading this stuff around?

Here is the deal... if Keyonte is a good starting pg... the absolute fastest that happens is like 2 years right? More likely its 2+ years. I just don't know that you bank on that happening real fast. Don't want to bury him but if he is competent as a solid backup for 15-20 minutes a night I will be happily surprised. It is more likely he is okay and shows flashes... then likely becomes solid as a backup in year 2... then there is another jump to take.

No need to wait while you have space and cheap players... assuming the right opportunity pops up.

Traditionally, point guards take their biggest leap between year 2 and 3. Deron, I believe, was unusual in that he popped between years 1 and 2.

Is Taveion from Marshall a good playmaker?
yes. whether he can do it at the next level is questionable, but any college wing who gets 22 ppg and 5+ assists per can make plays. 7th in the nation in scoring and 21st in assists. you have to go all the way to 33rd in scoring to find somebody who averaged more assists, and you have to 120th in assists to find somebody who averaged more points. in terms of scoring and passing, plus efficiency, there wasn't a more productive player in the country.

my two favorite comps are evan turner with athleticism and brandon roy. very unlikely an undrafted rookie ever reaches even the level of turner, but that's his archetype.

Yeah I just think that we can let him develop while adding a short/medium term option. It can still mean he is pgotf. If he is good earlier then great.

I dont know if this was posted, but Ben Anderson put his money on Dunn.

Dunn only started 3 games last year, the last 3 of the season when both Sexton and THT were out. Sexton became the started after Conley was traded and then THT became the starter after Sexton hurt his hamstring.

I still think we end up trading for a starting point guard, but if not, I think it's much more likely that either Sexton or THT is the starter than Dunn.

So which is it? Do you want a floor general PG or a team w/ 5 players who can pass dribble shoot? Because the latter means the former is much less of a priority.

I want the Jazz to be great again.
So.. whichever serves us best.

I do think having a main floor general makes scouting our offense a lot easier. If you have 5 guys that can all do it. Makes it a lot harder to plan for

Based on history or fits?

THT shooting is gonna be a problem if he starts. Teams can play off of him and they can cheat in PnR when you dont need to commit to guard the ballhandler shooting. Looking at our frontcourt I would say that PnR is gonna be a huge weapon for us. As a drive and kick player or as a lob passer he is the best of the bunch imo.

Sexton/JC dont have the same problem and you do need to defend them closer and respect their shooting in PnR, but they are more like traditional SGs than they are PG types. The positive in running either one is that they command more help defense than Dunn ever could, which in turn creates open looks at the 3. However their passing and playmaking chops are not on par with Dunn/THT and they both get tunnel vision at times.

Dunn is the one from that quartet with the least driving threat or self-creation but he is the best tablesetter and catch and shooter from the bunch, albeit the latter is based on last years limited sample size. However if the numbers hold that means his defender cannot play off and he can run any on ball actions as the handler without defenses being able to cheat on them. It would also mean his off ball spacing is the best of the bunch.

So while everyone of our options has clear deficiencies as of now, but I think the best fit with the frontcourt we have is Dunn.

They are likely already on the roster(Keyonte? Clarkson if he re-signs?, Sexton? THT?). With the trade for Collins FVV is very likely off the table.

If we are feeling adventurous ... maybe we try to strike a deal for Vasilije Micic?
Um Dunn

It's kind of wild how much sense Exum would make on the Jazz this year given how well he played in Europe and what Danny has stated he wants the roster to look like.
