2023 NBA Free Agency Thread

At least he’s 26, not 33, and can defend at least one position.

For sure. It is what it is. His market value is the super max, and Boston would've had to either pay it or let an all star level player just walk. I get it, but I'm glad it's not a decision the Jazz had to make.

2nd Team All-NBA

26.6 PPG
6.9 RPG
3.5 APG

Great on the defensive end. Not sure what more you are expecting from him but he’s definitely worth the money. Are you insinuating we shouldn’t max Lauri when the time comes?

Maybe I'm expecting the ability to go left?

I suppose we just define every player by their most glaring weakness... so we shouldn't max Lauri when the time comes because we expect a player to be an above average playmaker? Jokic can't protect the rim... we don't want that problem... Giannis can't even shoot... eff outta here scrub. Luka is cute and all but defense is 50% of the game... no thanks.

Dudes shot disappeared on him in the Eastern Conference Finals... it happens. He's still one of the 20-25 most valuable players in the league if you want to win a title. If Celtics offered him in a trade right now on his current contract DA would give up a good chunk of his draft assets for the right to "overpay" him.

Some super weird posts on here. I swear I don’t know exactly what people think is good. If you aren’t Giannis or Jokic or Curry you’re not worth max money apparently.
Jazz fans think the jazz organization is too good for guys like brown or league mvp's like embiid.
The jazz can just simply pick and choose what superstar they want and when they want them. Cause we are the Utah jazz. The premier franchise in all of sports.

I even understand with Embiid… cuz centers can’t ply with other centers. Brown can literally play with any superstar or all star you get and be an amazing fit. Two way all star wing. Yeah I’ll pay a bit of a cap premium for that lol.

The question I usually ask in a trade or free agency scenario is - if the Jazz had drafted him, would I want them to pay that much to keep him. I think the answer is yes. As such, I think he’ll be a target for them next year. It kind of depends on how the season goes for Boston and how all of their relationships are going.

Well i mean if we traded for embiid then i would assume kessler would be involved in the trade.

Brown is a really good player who happens to play a position that is the most sought after in today's NBA.

He's also a guy that can barely dribble the basketball.

I personally don't think he's worth $60 mil per season but totally understand why Boston felt compelled to give him that contract. They are built to win now.

FWIW I found this interesting and it also pertains to Lauri:

Scotto and Gozlan discussed Lauri and one of them said that Lauri getting renegotiate and extend deal next summer is the 2nd most bankable thing about 2024 offseason (#1 being Tatum getting his deal).

I'm tired of stupid ****ing Google. They apparently post made-up hypothetical trades as headlines and it shows up on my notifications.

Today I read 'The Jazz Trade for OG Anunoby' and I got super excited. Now I'm deleting that **** off my phone for fake newsing me.

I don't think the Jazz are too good for Brown, I think this is a bad contract. If I offer you a Mercedes-Benz but with the payments of a Lamborghini does declining mean you think you're too good for the Benz?

This is not just for the Jazz but for any team in the league. The supermax is a bad contract for the team unless the guy is a legit mvp candidate which Jaylen Brown is not. Do we not remember how bad Andrei Kirilenko's contract was for the Jazz? You would hope Brown is more committed to the game than Kirilenko was towards the end of that contract but Brown is also getting 35% of the cap instead of 25% like AK. Both are guys who are #2s at best that got paid like #1s.

This is the most recent list of supermax players I could find: https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/nba-supermax-contracts-history

I'm not a cap guy so I don't know for sure if this is 100% accurate but half of these are bad contracts. The NBA made it too easy to qualify for the supermax. It should be top 5 mvp finish or multiple 1st team all nba to be eligible. Guys like Jaylen Brown, Bradley Beal, KAT, John Wall, Lillard, and even Gobert getting paid like they're Lebron or Curry is not a winning strategy.

With the new extension rules it is basically malpractice for both Lauri and us not to figure it out. We need about 15M in space to give him a max extension. Might get him a slight discount over the length of the deal by tossing him a $15M bonus.

Go back and look at the list... a few of those didn't go well because of injuries but the vast majority of those deals were assets by the signing teams. Even Beal's deal was moved for positive value... and they would have done better had they not slapped a no trade on top. Russ was traded several times for assets on his deal.

Rudy, Beal, Lillard (who will be moved for a good haul) are some of the non-superstars on that list. Any contract is bad if there are injuries like with Wall.

Thoughts on Lauri at 60 mill a year?
Its the cap percentage I would look at. Imo 30% is fine for him, but even though Im a huge fan I agree with those who say that 35% should be reserved for top 10 caliber guys.... or at least they should have their own tier.

Ofc Lauri hasnt probably reached his ceiling as you dont usually just jump directly to it... so maybe if he can keep the 29+ PPG on good efficiency he had in the 2nd half of last year and add 2-3 more assists per game then I think he might get up there as a top 10 guy.

My thoughts are I wish I was taller more athletic and really good at basketball.

If the cap is 180M+ then whatevs... All-Stars generally aren't cheap.

This might be a hot take, I don’t Know. But if he’s improved from last year he might be top ten

The good news for us is that we get to see another full season from him before anything can be done so he has an opportunity to prove that last year wasn't some kind of fluke. I don't believe it was but we have seen tons of players over the years have huge years and then fall off drastically. The guy that always come to mind for me is Pervis Ellison. His 3rd year in the league he put up 20pts, 11.2rbs, 2.9asts, 2.7blks and .9stl. Now a days he would have signed a max contract that offseason only to fall off drastically over the next few years.
