Which path should we take?

  • Compete now - Trade for a "star" (Dejounte Murray, Zach LaVine, Quickley, or a similar type player)

It was widely reported that he tried to trade for Jrue Holiday before the season.
Almost Ainge... we were in on the Dame convo as well. There were hints that they wanted Hendricks... it may have been in the Jrue deal but based on the rumors I got the impression it may have been for Dame.

Most of the guys that become available are either unhappy or at the end of their contracts. We will have to be the highest bidder and also take a chance that the guy may not re-sign (if its a true star). They will have some ability to narrow their market. I'm not sure Ainge will be able to stomach that.

I doubt anyone is untouchable.
Ainge famously said no player is untouchable when he was in Boston I believe. The price has to make sense. Key for IQ does make some sense in a vacuum... but I think we'd have assets we'd rather sell off and Knicks would very much prefer those. I don't see acquiring IQ as a reason to offload or not need Key, so I wouldn't force that type of deal. If I loved IQ I'd offer up the two picks over a pick and Key.

"Chill Mode" and "Ainge" are antonyms. They both cannot exist at the same time in the Basketball Universe.

That said, I would go full blown accountant and maximize future team value during a championship run by trading Lauri.

Even if he didn't say it. What the hell does it mean for a player to be untouchable? If someone called and offered a player Ainge values over Keyonte, he would turn the deal down because Keyonte was proclaimed untouchable? That's a stupid way to run a business, and he doesn't strike me as stupid.

Narratives attract an audience, so journalists create them. But nobody is untouchable.

If that's your view then just blow it completely up.
It might be what we have to do eventually. I just think if you give too much in the deal and too much of the cap it will affect what you can do around those guys. Like what is better...

IQ or Sexton, two firsts, and 15-20M more in cap space each year?

Like I might be good giving two firsts if I knew I was getting IQ on a team friendly deal... but even then its a bit rich. If you are saying you give up two firsts and have to pay him 35-40M a year its going to limit what you can do around them.

As the million dollar man said... everybody has a price.

Sexton/Yurt and a pick for IQ/Fournier is about the price I'd pay. KO/Dunn/Yurt plus a pick for IQ/Fournier would be another iteration.

If the price is higher than that right now I wait until the offseason and try to do a sign and trade maybe... or move on to other targets. If you know what you are going to have to pay him I'm willing to push more onto the table.

He literally made two of the biggest trades in franchise history after taking over...

that's a truly laughable lowball

Plus a pick… the way Sexton is playing and on a reasonable contract compared to what Quickley is going to get.
Sexton isnt a bad player, but the Knicks have next to no need for him. When you're a team featuring a 6'1 star you have to be more size minded and they have a ton of guard talent.

And as far as the Jazz, IQ is just flat out better. It's worth the price difference. IQ makes you better on both ends.

Don't you know... the grass is always greener.

Instead of playing IQ 24 minutes per game they give 20 minutes to Sexton, get a pick, and can fill in the rest of the minutes with the other options they have. They roll the asset forward and avoid having to eat a 30-35M per year offer sheet they hope to flip later.

You can overlap IQ and Brunson though. You cant play Sexton/Brunson together at all.
