Is Cody too similar to Hendricks?

The Midnight

So I was thinking about this.

Both are lengthy, athletic, can knock down open shots and have the tools to be elite defenders.

But they both lack the ability to create for themselves. Lack the dribbling ability and the ‘wiggle’. You can’t give them the ball and say ‘go get me a basket’ in the final minutes of the game.

That’s what separates the likes of Tatum and Brown to the rest of the League.

Are we just doubling up on 2 guys that are very similar but lack the shot creation ability that All Stars have?

Are they just nothing more than premium 3 and D guys?

Would they ever develop into Tatum-lite over time?

not if they each become what you hope they are. williams ceiling would be as a high volume scoring, playmaking, wing. Hendricks would be as a rebounding, rim protecting, floor stretching big.
Yeah but can Cody develop that elite scoring ability that separates him from most 3 and D guys?

He doesn’t currently have that off the dribble game or even the dribble/wiggle to get separation.

That is what Cody Williams is. You draft him because he can get to the basket off the dribble, that is his main thing. If you think he was a 3&D prospect with no off the dribble game, you are mistaken.

Almost no guys his size have an off the dribble game at his age, and if they do they go top 3.

In my opinion he has the touch and feel and potential to develop that, and that is why he is exciting.

Playing off the dribble is about the only thing that he did well at Colorado. His defense and shooting is still theoretical....but he was actually good at driving and finishing at the basket at COL.

He's still got a ways to go as far as pulling up or passing off the dribble, but the possibility looks real.

Right, he needs to expand on his current game....but off the dribble is the entire point of drafting Cody Williams. Hendricks is such a different player, athlete, and body type if we're being honest. Hendricks was 40 lbs heavier and plays like it.

If you look at this breakdown, his strengths are slashing to the basket and transition plays, but perimeter creation and dribble are improvement areas.

Slashing to the basket is playing off the dribble, and these are listed as improvement areas because that's where he's headed as a player. This forum was glazing Taylor Hendricks like crazy and yet nobody imagined him playing off the dribble. Completely different players. Cody is a player who will play with the ball in his hands, Taylor Hendricks is a player that will dribble like 5 times total in a game.

Neither Hendricks or Williams are good enough to plan around them in the starting lineup, but if they reach their potential (along with Keyonte), then a Keyonte, Williams, Hendricks, Lauri, Kessler lineup could be a thing.

Your worried about having too many guys that are long, athletic, shoot, and guard multiple positions?
Well against the West elites and with the clock running down, I’m looking for a guy I could give the ball to and let him get a basket ala Tatum, Doncic, Jokic, etc..

I’m worried about who on our team currently have that potential?

I don't understand this topic.

Even if they both only turned out to be "premier 3&D guys", the ability to shoot 3s and play defense aren't skills that overlap at all in basketball. You WANT multiple of those guys.

Look at what NYK just did to get two of those guys.
