What's new

Lauri re-signs for 5 years 238 million

Looks like a reasonable deal.

And now comes the question - is he worth more on this deal on draft day 2025 or on his 18M contract yesterday?
Assuming health... 2025. Many teams likely weren't going to gamble on a one year contract with no chance at extension really. You can rely on a wink and a nod but also might have to give up the farm contractually to get it done later (5 years player options full max). 4 years at a smidge less than max and already buttoned up... it opens up the market to a lot of teams.

If he turns in a similar season to his two previous, it will be more. The follow up question to that would be, is it more than the effect that Lauri will have on our lotto position?

@stitches asks if the new contract makes Markkanen a better trade asset. You ask how the trade asset improvement compares to the (presumed) lottery position decline.

Those are worthwhile questions, but I think only insofar as they contribute to the larger (more important, not equivalent) question of how does having Markkanen with this contract help contribute to the Jazz's long term prospects.

The follow up to that would be....compared to what? And that's a hard question because don't know exactly what the trade was available. If every single pick/swap was available + Moody, I think I would have taken that deal.

If we're talking about comparing Lauri on this deal versus Lauri on a 1/$18.....we're definitely better off now.

That is assuming lotto position is stagnant, which it isn't. We tanked to get under two teams that picked before us this year. Had we kept Tec, we probably pick 4th. That may not happen with Lauri, but moving up because we have Lauri or it not mattering at all are not zero.

I still wish we could pay forward on Lauri's contract even more this season and next than in the last 3 years. We don't have salary issues today even though we maxed out every penny we had but contending teams are always penny pinching. I appreciate the attempt to penny pinch on the back half of the contract by throwing $23 extra in to the 2024 salary but I still wish it was descending more later.

Other than that... it's great to have Lauri on the team...

Now lets get serious about tanking and get some blue chip help. No 10 - 3 starts. Play the youth next to a healthy and developing Lauri and finish bottom 3 please.

If it wasn't obvious, I'm talking about having more or less lotto balls as a result of having Lauri. I would always take more lottery balls than less lottery balls. I'm not in the business of perfectly calculating a lotto before it happens.

I am happy we will have Lauri around a while longer. I do not believe we will ever field a competitor around him before we are forced to trade him to recoup his value. But I like him as a player and enjoy watching him play, and will enjoy it for the next 2-3 years.
I wont be surprised if we trade him after a year. We gave rudy 5/208m, dm 5/198m then traded them later. It just feels like another DA thing.

Was Lauri Markkanen just an afterthought in the trade. I mean right after the trade the Jazz extended Sexton leading me to think he was a big piece of the deal, and getting a recent lotto drafted player yet to play a game is always a big get, then there’s Markkanen. I mean would the Jazz still have made the deal if it had been say Okoro instead? If true it’s a great story

I don't know about afterthought but I do think that the jazz thought that Sexton was the main prize in that trade (other than all the picks)

Nice.
Gotta tank HARD. Get the other part of the duo in next year's draft.
