Jazz Sign Patty Mills

Maybe this is a sign that Sextons on the way out.
It's much easier to trade a player during the early-ish offseason, when most rosters are not set yet and the teams have more cap flexibility. If the Jazz truly planned to trade Sexton soon they would have attempted to do it a month ago and there would have been be some rumors of him being on the trading block. It is still possible that the Jazz are open to trading Sexton for the right price but they are almost certainly not planning to do it now, before they can see how well Keyonte and Collier are doing.

The simplest explanation is that the Jazz replaced one veteran PG, Dunn, with another in Mills simply because Mills could be had for less money and years.

Yeah, but…
Its different with him... I promise. He is not part of the plan going forward. John Collins though I could see going bonkers and the infection "principle of trading a player while they are playing well" applying.

I guess it depends on your definition of bad. You have repeated multiple times that we are in a group of 4-5 teams that are the next tier up from WAS and BKN.

Average finish in that tier of yours would put us 4th or 5th worst. That fits my definition of bad.

I used the term overperform but meant outperform. However despite my wrong choice of words, you should have noted that expectations are equally speculative than how teams may or may not perform in relation to them.

It doesn't really matter what you definition is bad. I said what I expected of the Jazz, and I believe that they are in a group of 4-5 teams above WAS and BKN. Since then may have been convinced to put POR above us. If your definition of bad doesn't included that...who cares my expectation is exactly as I just stated. At the end of the day, everyone has some kind of expectation as to what will happen. Never have I said it will definitely happen, it's just what I expect to be the most likely outcome. Having an expectation or projection is not saying something will definitely happen or is guaranteed. If I wanted to something will definitely happen, I would have said that.

Everything is speculative, we're talking about a season before it happened. It doesn't change that fact that some things can be more or less likely to happen. The Jazz winning the championship and the Jazz missing the playoffs are both speculative but we can reasonably talk about which is more likely based on how we see the Jazz in relation to the rest of the league. I couldn't care less about getting into a semantics argument. I'm speculating about the season and you are too. That's just what we do when we talk about a season that hasn't happened yet.

If this is purely a locker room mentor type signing it’s genius, you will not find a higher character guy in pro sports. If Will Hardy utilises him fully playing wise it’s a bad move

If he is on the court it sucks a bit to not get dev time but he's been very bad... so will help the tank. Its clear why they are signing Patty.

I was listening to the Sam Vecenie podcast after Lauri signed and he called Clarkson a top 50 offensive player. I think if he has a return to form season he is tradeable. I don't think it has to be insane, but show he can shoot somewhat close to 35%.

Dang it, Hardy has just enough (barely) to do something. Add this signing to a well rested/leveled up Lauri, Sexton, JCx2, Walker and we could get some early wins.
Dang it all...

The denial is strong there: they are bringing the vets in case one of our young players gets hurt, Patty is here just for veteran leadership and not for playing, they will tell Lauri to spend more time with his family...

No guys, all of the offseason moves are very clear: not trading Clarkson or Sexton, resigning Lauri, adding solid bench vets in Eubanks, Svi and Mills... The Jazz seriously want to compete by playing veterans instead of their young players. They have a decent bench now and several starting-level players and they will be winning their matches among the non-playoff teams. And Hendricks, Brice, Flip, Collier and Cody will play very limited minutes... at least before the midseason trades.

This is not the direction I want this team moving in but that is what they are clearly doing.

My prediction after this major signing stays the same. 5th…but not 5th worst. I mean 5th as in Patty will be leading us to our 5th straight championship after winning gold in 2028.

Will Hardy is coaching. Odds of him being that are much higher in Utah than elsewhere.
Brother he just played for Quin Snyder and Eric Spoelstra and sucked. He sucks. He's not good anymore. Maybe he can have a good game here and there, but he is going to be bad.

I have a feeling I'm unreasonably high on Will Hardy fr

Yeah I've seen Patty struggles in NBA so maybe it's my time to stop thinking Will Hardy can pull off all kind of miracles.

It's not a scheme thing. He's old. Hes a guy that relies on quickness to create separation to get his dribble jumpers off. I watched him struggle to create quality looks against Jokic in iso. He doesn't have it anymore. He can summon it for a game or two like he did in the Olympics, but he can't do it against NBA players during a NBA season.

Defense can also be covered up a little easier in Olympic play. Dude will get cooked on that side of the floor. After getting his feet wet Collier should be able to cook Patty enough in practice to make it obvious who should be playing.

Patty there to provide leadership and waive towels like a mfer.

Honestly, as long we be starting Collins - which I believe won't change this season because of his still sizeable contract (next we should trade, dump, or just waive him), what happened to him when he no longer was treated as a centerpiece in Atlanta, and what benching him (even more for kids or minimum salary level players) would mean to the FO decision of trading for him - either through him playing as PF or C (tho I believe he'll play more as a C, and I that being the case because his whole NBA career he's been better as a C, not a PF), we'll have a decently high scoring collective attack that doesn't match the consistency and star power of most franchises, thus still losing a ton, even more being at the western conference (only the Blazers should be as bad or worse in the same conference).

If we need to go hard on the tanking just tell Lauri to go spend time with his kids and call It a day,
How Jazz should do that without NBA's big bos named Adam Silver figuring out that Jazz really are losing on purpose sitting Lauri or removing him on the roster.
Do you understand that if / when Jazz get caught for losing on purpose for draft tanking that means stiff fines and losing the lottery pick.
Also NBA's player association will have their word to say on Lauri's situation.
