No, that’s not what happened. You definitely heard wrong. Perhaps you heard disinformation from his running mate Natalie Clawson? Or her sisters, Stephanie Liberty Grant or Tiffany America Barker or Michelle Steele? They’ve been on a social media blitz for the last few months spreading nonsense.
Phil won the party caucus. But because Cox had obtained enough signatures, Cox and Lyman entered a primary race. Lyman then he lost the primary race convincingly. Lyman litigated over the Cox signature route and lost. Then he entered as a write-in candidate. And in Trump like fashion, he has spewed a bunch of disinformation about the primary election which has obviously confused some voters.
The truth is the party caucus voters are the most extreme and rabid voters in the state. They’re voting for candidates who are very unpopular among regular GOP voters. After Bob Bennett lost in the caucus, the legislature passed legislation that creates two routes to win the primary:
1. Win the caucus vote
Or
2. Lose the caucus vote but obtain enough signatures from party members to enter a primary runoff.
We’re seeing increasingly that candidates like Mitt Romney and Spencer Cox lose in the caucus to Trumpy candidates only to win easily in the primary. The issue is the caucus, the caucus is increasingly out of step with regular voters. Which, isn’t surprising, as caucus voters are the most intense and Fox News addicted folks out there.
