What's new

Game Thread Nov 19, 2024 08:30PM MT: Utah Jazz @ Los Angeles Lakers

Added to Calendar: 11-19-24

Also Lakers are basically only playing with 4 guys (LBJ, AD, Reaves, Knecht). They need to preserve their players' energy until they make a few trades. I can see them potentially having interest in a few Jazzmen (Kessler? Sexton?). DLo won't be there at the deadline that's for sure.
Doubt the Lakers make any big trades given how well they are playing. They've already been pretty upfront about not wanting to hurt their future for short-term. Got to think wining only reinforces they are OK staying the course, especially with Knecht/AD/Reeves looking good.

No, the problem is that what he did at Colorado – against much, much weaker competition – may have been his ceiling as a player. There was never any hint that he has that extra gear you need when you get to the NBA.

He was drafted at #10 because of name recognition and a mistaken belief that there was a reason to expect him to be something of a late bloomer, like his bro.
Yeah, I remember Tony Jones being so high on him saying there weren’t many with his combination of size and ball handling and athleticism, and shooting, and he does none of that. I took Umbridge to that just looking off the tape from Colorado he did none of that. I didn’t see it and I’m not seeing it now. I like Tony, and think he’s got knowledge and all but he had that wrong.

Problem #1 with drafting 19yos: You're projecting your own vision on to them what they can be - and may be terribly wrong.
Problem #2: Realistically it's not possible to put a 1st round pick in the G league for two full seasons to develop. And just practicing with an NBA team won't fulfill that vision ever.

Right now Cody is unplayable and this isn't helping anyone. But then of course, who will you play? Svi? The decision on Sensabaugh seems made.

At this point Cody needs to be sent down to the G league to work on his game.

Last night, Cody played 4 mins in each half and didn't really handle the ball or take a shot. Other players, except Collier, treat him like he's an intern. Lauri won't pass him the ball.

Cody should be getting 20+ on-ball reps and 8 3PAs a night in the Gleague. The rest of the time he should be working on his body.

While Markkanen and Cody were on the court Lauri had maybe a single touch where he could've passed the ball the Cody. On every single touch that Markkanen had when he was on the court with Cody, he either scored immediately or got fouled once while shooting. The player that had the most touches and touches on almost every possession while Cody was on, was in fact Collier.

But the point about no-one passing him the ball is correct. Although, he rarely is in a position where anyone should pass him the ball.

This board is so dramatic and impatient. It was just one game ago that Cody did some nice things to get excited about. Dalton Knecht was a 5th year senior and took 10 games to start to settle in to the NBA. Over his first 10 games he averaged 6.1pts on 38/28 shooting splits. I'm sure you could go to Laker boards and see meltdowns, which would look funny now just a couple of games later.

Cody has unquestionably been bad and does not belong in the league right now. It's also still November in to his rookie season. Hopefully we get a few more flashes towards the end of the year. This board will be unreadable if we continue to meltdown with every poor performance of his.

I think meltdowns are connected to losing/tanking (a.k.a being bad) more than anything. Lauri 238M deal meltdowns are also on the way I presume (seen some glimpses already).

We will have some nice conversations along the way but venting and frustration is inevitable when your favourite team keeps losing.

Just gear up your canoe and prepare to ride the river of salty tears for this year.

LA with Lebron and AD is also a place I can see guys being star struck. Like Flip didn't quite look like himself at times last night either. Collier was a bit frantic at times. Juzang also pressing to have a good homecoming game.

Its just in our faces cuz Dalton went bonkers. He is in a perfect situation for his skillset. He is also 23 or whatever. We have been lucky to see some meteoric rises from rookies like Donovan and even with Rudy you could tell he was a problem. Many success stories look more like Gordon Hayward's. You'd think folks would be a little more patient considering the poor play helps us with the tank anyway.

True and good points. FWIW I appreciate your level headedness on this board.

It was just a little overwhelming trying to catch up on the conversation this morning and seeing so many negative posts about Cody. To be fair I didn't watch the game last night so I'm a little insulated from that performance.

Compared to Cody, Hayward looked like a future star from day one and had an actual motor. I see no similarities between them.

it's not that williams bad or struggling, etc - well it is sorta those things - but the main issue is that he's not doing anything. he doesn't even try. collier, and keyonte early in the season, are examples of guys who just stink sometimes, struggling with their shot, turnovers, etc - but at least they are going out and playing basketball. there is a level of aggression when they are on the floor.

cody williams just goes out there and stands around. gets the ball takes a dribble or two and swings it to the nearest teammate. all i'm asking is for him to do something. it's too reminiscent of Dante Exum (and what i saw that caused me to hate him as a draft prospect in feb and march at colorado) and it's giving me ptsd.

Hendricks was so lost at the start of last year and didnt do anything either. This year he came in being much more assertive.

Let's be honest tho... you'd have thought he sucked too... cuz everyone sucks lol.

At one point last night he got the ball on the wing and swung it to a covered Eubanks like 15 feet from the basket on the baseline with AD (I believe, maybe Koloko) on him. Dude just does not want the ball.

I do think Eubanks scored on that possession with a running hook, but still kind of funny/sad.

I also think he got some lasting PTSD from the Suns game where he kept getting stripped anytime to drive

A good deal of it seems mental. It looks like he's playing with his hands covered in butter and just got done lifting weights.

I think his motor and aggression level is a fair question, however I choose to believe that he's just a cerebral guy that needs to mentally get up to speed before his body can start responding. He's still very clearly processing the game. A lot of what we see as aggression on the court is rooted in confidence, which Cody has none right now. Offensively I'm guessing he recognizes that he can't do anything positive with the ball and so he defers to teammates that can. This might be the part of his game where the G-League could most benefit him.

He needs to either fix his shot or fix his body before he can really do anything in the NBA and gain confidence. Neither are easy or immediate fixes, but both are likely to happen over time. Hopefully he figures out some ways that he can be a positive on the court in the meantime. He's a smart kid and has good coaches around him, so I think they will figure it out.

Yeah need patience with the young guys. None of them have proven themselves yet. Play them all. This is a tank year for us.

Cody got credited with an assist for that play. Incredible playmaker!
