What's new

Trump Dictatorship and All Things Politics

One day after Trump derailed a bipartisan government funding bill – with a big assist from tech multibillionaire Elon Musk – he issued a new demand, for a stripped-down government funding bill that would also raise the limit on how much the new debt the federal government can issue to fund its deficit spending.

Trump's demand was a tacit admission that his legislative agenda, heavy on tax cuts and new military spending, was unlikely to deliver the kind of deficit reduction that many on the right have been hoping for.

On Thursday night, this slimmed-down bill, along with a two-year suspension of the debt limit, came up for a vote in the House. Thirty-eight Republicans joined nearly every Democrat in rejecting it. This amounted to a stunning rebuke of the president-elect, who had enthusiastically endorsed the legislation and threatened to unseat any Republicans who opposed it.

Even the best-case scenario for Republicans at this point only pushes the next shutdown fight a few months down the road, when the party will have to juggle funding the federal government while also trying to enact Trump's legislative agenda on immigration, taxes and trade, all with an even narrower House majority.

A worst-case scenario has all this, coming after an extended government shutdown, followed by a debt-limit battle in the summer, when deficit-minded conservatives may be even less willing to fall in line behind the president.

Trump and Elon Musk can kill legislation, but they can't necessarily rally the support to get their proposals over the finish line.

From the comments section:
President MUSK, almost a trillionaire, wanted to cut a children's cancer study so that he could pave the way for Trump to give more huge tax cuts to billionaires.President Musk wanted to pave the way for the most fiscally IRRESPONSIBLE president in US history, Demented Don, to drive the debt up even more than he did last time. A MULTI-billionaire, who receives BILLIONS from the federal government, tried to ax a study to keep children from getting cancer. There is something really SICK about today's OLIGARCH party. I praise every Republican who voted AGAINST President Musk's evil bill.

Just after midnight Friday, Trump again demanded lawmakers pass a boost to the debt ceiling, posting on his social media site: “Congress must get rid of, or extend out to, perhaps, 2029, the ridiculous Debt Ceiling. Without this, we should never make a deal.”

Hmm, I wonder why he chose 2029 lol.

A bill got passed!

Voting formally ends, Democrats vote yes.

With an overwhelming bipartisan majority, Republicans and Democrats came together Friday evening to pass a short-term spending bill to keep the government open through March 14.

The final vote was 366-34-1, easily surpassing the two-thirds majority threshold needed for passage under suspension of the rules.

No Democrats voted against the measure, while 34 Republicans voted against it.

Biden supports funding bill

President Joe Biden has thrown his support for the funding bill that is being voted on by the House, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.

The president "supports moving this legislation forward and ensuring that the vital services the government provides for hardworking Americans -- from issuing Social Security checks to processing benefits for veterans -- can continue as well as to grant assistance for communities that were impacted by devastating hurricanes," she said in a statement.

Jean-Pierre added that while the bill "does not include everything we sought," it does keep the government running, get aid to those still recovering from disasters earlier this year and " eliminates the accelerated pathway to a tax cut for billionaires."

She slammed President-elect Donald Trump for causing the last-minute scramble.

"Following an order by President-elect Trump, yesterday Republicans walked away from a bipartisan deal and threatened to shut down the government at the 11th hour in order to pave the way to provide tax breaks for billionaires. This revised legislation does not do that," she said.

President MUSK, almost a trillionaire, wanted to cut a children's cancer study ...
Good. It should have been cut. The government doesn't make children's cancer drugs. They don't make any kinds of cancer drugs. That was $190 million going into someone's pocket under a noble sounding title. There was probably $150 million for kicking-of-puppies prevention too.

Boo

Democrats have gotta stop bailing republicans out. They never get credit for being the responsible adults. Bored Americans gave republicans power so they should feel the consequences of their actions. If that means ****ing themselves with a painful shutdown? So be it. Besides, it’s not like the majority of those rural suckers and losers who saw their houses destroyed will ever vote for a Democrat.

Why do Democrats help republicans to the detriment of their own base? Why pass legislation? Let the country go to hell, it’s what the voters wanted.

It’s infuriating.

I personally don't want the country to go to hell even when trump wins an election
I love America and hope the government does a great job while trump is in office and things are wonderful.

But then we’re just postponing the consequences. Voters need to feel what they voted for. The current situation is untenable. One party gets to perform a circle jerk every few days of anger and extremism that goes unchecked. They promise things like mass
Deportations, tariffs, and running the government like a business. Stupid and bored people fall for this nonsense and empower this party. The party continues to radicalize its adherents with more and more extreme rhetoric.

It’s time to put that rhetoric into practice or else admit that they’re merely passing gas on Fox News.

Democrats should stop shielding voters from the consequences of their voting. Vote for an *** clown? Don’t shield them from being **** on. It’s the only way for them to learn!

Thats just it though. They either will or they wont. Government will do a good or bad job while trump is president. Our country will get better or worse.
I hope that I have been wrong all along. I hope the Government kicks butt over the next 4 years and our country gets better. I would rather be wrong and happy than right and miserable. I will always root for every single administration and for our country to succeed. We are just going to have to agree to disagree here.

I for one hope the (negative) consequences are postponed forever and instead there are hella positive consequences.

I think trump will make things worse but I would love to be wrong.

I think it was you explaining to all of us just earlier today that Trump is not currently the President.

So in that instance Trump not being in office was the primary issue, but in this the primary issue is what Trump hopes to do some day once he becomes President.

Trump is not doing anything right now, correct? He has no influence and can be assigned no blame?

Just try to be consistent.
