Jazz Suns trade

I hope so. I have a tough time seeing how they do the deal, still, since the Heat didn’t want Beal a year and a half ago and he has that NTC.

Yeah, I think they need to like do cascading salary dumps to turn Beal's contract into an expiring they can get send to the Heat.

I'm guessing Ben Simmons ends up in Miami in this trade.

I don't see what three late 1st-round picks are going to do for Phoenix here.
The Jazz are probably going to be good in '29.
The Cavs' pick this year is going to be #29 or #30 in a meh draft.
The pick in '27 is probably going to be another Cavs pick in the 20s.

They are likely going to a facilitator team to take on bad salary.

Only way I come out of this think that the Jazz did poorly is if it looks like the facilitator team got out better and we could have done the same thing.

The Jazz are in a better position now nonetheless.

Okay, so maybe the Suns have to attach two FRPs to move Beal.

We basically gave them 3 picks that will most likely be in the 20's. Getting an unprotected first that far out from them is a good gamble as it could turn out to be a top 10 or possibly top 5 pick, and even if it turns out to be a mediocre pick we're not out much.

No it's not. Sure, it's probably better than an average 2031 pick right now. But there are absolutely no guarantees how any team will be performing six years from now.

The Suns have given away all their draft assets to acquire Kevin Durant and Brad Beal (whom they'll now need to attach a pick to in order to move). KD will be retired. If PHX gets Butler, he'll be retired as well. So unless PHX can sign star free agents, they'll be bad around that time.

Another benefit is that picks are the purest liquid capital on the market and when you draft a player (especially at the end of the 1st round), the value of that asset upon transference to a prospect diminishes more than a car when you drive it off the lot. So punting back better positions you to cash in for a player with a really long runway.

If it’s a late lottery pick, that’s probably about = 3 late 1sts.

And as mentioned a second ago, it’s certainly more useful for trading for a star player.

Alright, so one downside is that swapping the Cleveland puck with another team’s first this year is basically out of the question. I really liked that idea as a means of extracting 1st round value while it is easier to stomach for another team (re: Sexton/Collins/Clarkson trades).

Additionally, if they keep extending KD and Butler, the bill for their corpses will prevent them from having cap space.

Yes, I think people forget that you don’t have to draft with the pick. 2031 is a long ways away and anything can happen, but chances are the Suns aren’t going to be un ****ed in the next few years. They’re hard committing to Butler and Durant who are 35 and 36 years old. It’s a great asset now, it’s going to get better as a trade asset in the upcoming years as the Suns ride out the KD era by continuing to double down. We do not have to wait until 31 to cash in on that value.

Weird trade. Drafts are very deep now, not like you can’t get good players outside the lottery. So it’s definitely a gamble.

But you also can’t just keep adding so many young guys every year. So I guess… kinda makes sense for both teams?

So just think about this. Suns just tripled down so they can get Jimmy effing Butler and give him an extension. Its clear KD has become a little bit of a franchise killer... Jimmy is a serial killer... this is the tag team they are betting on. My only worry is they bottom out too fast and can bounce back a bit by then. They are giving matches, cans of gas, and a flame thrower to two adolescent boys and putting them in front of a dry grain field with some fireworks unattended. Like **** gonna burn its just a matter of how much and how fast.

Right and as the team burns teams will look at that pick and be like "hell ya we want that". So when we need to get another star to pair with Cooper the timing will be perfect.

There will be some team with a star in 2027 that is going to contemplate tanking and will see the Suns pick as a great start to their rebuild. It could be the difference between us and whatever other teams who want that guy.

Is it the absolute best pick? No, but I’d still consider it a premium pick and one that will be timely one way or another. The Jazz were actually under a bit of time pressure with roster spots and having to use all their picks more quickly.

I do not consider this eating value, but if something like this didn’t happen eating value in a trade was probably inevitable. Better this than trade our 25 CLE for like 3 distant seconds.
