I can’t afford this Trump economy

MAGA will still say this is the greatest news……

A professor and former Department of Labor economist is warning that unelected White House advisor and multi-hyphenate billionaire Elon Musk is sending the United States headlong into a huge recession.

In a post on Bluesky, Jesse Rothstein, a University of California, Berkeley public policy professor who was the DOL's chief economist at the start of the Obama administration, addressed the dire situation we could soon be facing.

"It seems almost unavoidable at this point," Rothstein wrote, "that we are headed for a deep, deep recession."

Between the hundreds of thousands of government jobs on the chopping block and the cancellations of countless federal contracts, the economist noted that upcoming employment reports are looking quite scary indeed.

"The March employment report (to be released April 4) seems certain to show bigger job losses than any month ever outside of a few in 2008-9 and 2020," the professor wrote in his multi-post thread. "Add on to that enormous private market uncertainty — how could you hire in these conditions? — and this is going to be very, very bad."
Well a deep deep recession is a surefire way to fix inflation. Brilliant!

EDIT: Wow! This post has blown up! Many of you have asked for sources, so I (Georgia L. S.) went ahead and edited the post to include those. I tried to use "close to the source" sources as possible: Stories published in ag trade publications, notices from agricultural, trade and manufacturing organizations and, in some cases, links to social media posts where people are personally discussing their experiences. Folks, it's taken a few days to trickle down, but I'm seeing post after post after post in the ag community social media channels of massive issues impacting U.S. farmers and the U.S. ag economy from Trump's DOGE efforts, tariff wars and the USAID shutdown.

Here are a few:

*Cotton and grain growers are losing contracts to long-time Canadian buyers because, even with the tariff pause, Canadian buyers don't trust the stability of U.S. export commerce with Trump in office. Plus, Canadians are just flat-out pissed and avoiding U.S. made/produced goods, including farm products. SOURCES:

* USDA NRCS is cancelling conservation contracts and leaving farmers holding the bag. These are things like fence improvements and upgraded water lines that boost farmer efficiency while also conserving the environment. Plus, the way they work is the farmer has to do the work first, then once they are done, the NRCS reimburses them. So now farmers that have spent the money to do the work are being told the NRCS won't honor their contracts.

K State University lost up to $50 million that was pledged through a USAID Program over the next five years to advance research in “sustainable intensification,” an approach focused on increasing crop yields without expanding agricultural land use, expected to directly benefit Kansas (and U.S.) farmers.

* China's retaliatory tariffs (although not yet on crops, we shall see) are expected to have a major impact on U.S. ag machinery manufacturers, who were already struggling and have had massive lay-offs over the last 12 months. China imported almost $800 million of U.S.-manufactured ag machinery in 2020.

And it goes on and on and on with new, major issues coming to light on a near-hourly basis. My heart hurts for U.S. farmers and U.S. farm communities, large and small, that are needlessly and thoughtlessly being impacted by this. P.S. I'm making this public, so please, share away.

Wow, who besides hundreds of industry professionals, economic experts, and government officials, as well as thousands of regular citizens who ****ing pay attention, could have ever seen something like this coming!! Mind-boggling that when you **** around, sooner or later, you find out. Trump ****ed around with Tariffs and now America is going to find out. Of course, Trump couldn't ****ing care less, as he and his billionaire buddies will still be just fine, better than fine in fact, so why would they give 2 ****s about cotton farmers. I am sure Trump will point out how those cotton farmers are corrupt, taking in federal subsidies, and sucking on America's teat, so it doesn't matter if their lives are destroyed anyway.

The discontent is bound to spread, as the impacts on the economy spreads. Maybe Trump will be tempted to stage something to recoup the buzz? Full scale invasion of Greenland would energize MAGA, and take their minds off their woes….

I wonder what percentage of farmers and those within their industry voted for Trump.

GRAPHIC: Trump support grew in America’s top farming counties despite first-term trade war

Farming-dependent counties rallied behind Trump with an average of nearly 78% support.

I would really hope the military would just refuse the order if that is the move he tries to make. I cannot imagine very many of our troops being on board invading a sovereign nation just for the ***** and giggles of the fascist in chief. Maybe he mobilizes the Proud Boys to do it, make them an elite military unit for his invasions. They would have no qualms shooting whoever, since they are all pieces of ****.

...where we already have a military base and Denmark says our military can do whatever they want. Do you think Trump will then invade Hill Air Force Base in Utah? How about Hawaii? There are many US military bases there. Do you think those are safe from a Trump invasion?

I bet more Americans die each year due to a lack of health insurance. This long lines argument is weak. Our healthcare system ****ing blows and everyone knows it.
A few years back I desperately needed rheumatologist so I got a referral and 8 months later they called me telling me there was an appointment available. So glad I don't have to wait in long lines.

I had a very similar issue.

So if we’re waiting months to receive health care and having to pay out of our *** to receive care, what’s the point of our insurance based system?
