Following Potential 2025 Draftees

Cam Thomas is a little bit of brains and defensive effort away from being an all star. The difference between he and Herro is mostly maturity and defensive effort. He is probably a top 10-15 scorer in the league, I don't know how that is an insult unless you are guaranteeing that Tre Johnson will be all star. If you find it to be an insult, I think you probably don't know much about Cam Thomas or just have unreasonable expectations. Expectations must be sky high if an efficient 25 PPG is an insult. What would be non insulting expectation, 30 a game? Leading the league in scoring?

Defense is obviously a concern for Tre, but I also wonder about his ability to put pressure on the rim. Is he being restricted a bit due to his conditions at Texas? Honestly, he might be like Herro and be good enough anyways without a ton of rim pressure.
Cam is a bulky slasher who draws contact and gets to the line at will.

Tre is more of a tough shot maker who doesnt always look for contact but shoots over his defender, like a Devin Booker.

About 30 lbs in muscle separating between the two.

20 lbs

I think Tre's role and role models will be like Devin Booker and Klay Thompson. He has a path to being a significant quick-release shooter. His ball movement and defense really just need to be enough for him to stay on the floor and blend in.

Booker and Klay are two different types though. Klay doesn't have the level of shot creation as Book but Book is not half the defender that Klay was in his prime. I think Tre is definitely closer to Book than he is to Klay.

Yeah give or take. The bottom line is Tre needs to get stronger. Even book is like 20lbs more than him and has grown to 6’7 or 6’8 to get to the star status that he is now.
The only data we have says 20. But we can just rely on your eye test that called Johnson undersized.

6th man archetype, doubt he can be more than that.
This is the type of guy that hits in the late teens 20s. We have collected so many players in the 6th man archetype that it doesn't make sense, but I discounted McCain last year because of fit. Jase is a guy I have my eye on to be the Maxey/McCain/Quickley/Simons/Key?/Collier? type guy that is under drafted because of perceived player type.

No comparison is perfect, Devin Booker also gets to the line a ton. He basically shoots at the rim and free throw line at the same rate as Thomas. In fact, Booker and Thomas have near identical shot distributions, but the point isn't to make mountains out of molehills. The comparison to Cam Thomas is one to say that Tre could be one of the better scorers in the league but he will likely struggle on defense and will have to improve as a playmaker. The more he improves his defense and playmaking the more you can consider him to be like a Herro or Booker. But there would be very few players who I'd say that would be the baseline expectation.

Its not about the size of the Johnson...

Actually though...we care too much about measurables and not enough about how they actually play basketball. Well, I guess we care when it supports our predetermined opinion and not at all when it doesn't.

Let me ask a question of the board:

At the #4 spot, there seems to be a clear preference for VJ Edgecombe vs. Tre Johnson. Curious to know why that is?

VJ's athletic tools are clear but Tre is no slouch as an athlete and has ideal length / measurables for a 2-guard, and his offensive repertoire / production jumps off the page. 21 ppg on 45/40/88 shooting splits is also hard to ignore.

This is a genuinely curious question - just curious to hear from some who have an obvious preference for VJ.

I'm liking Edgecombe more lately, but I lol at the dudes who think he's head-and-shoulders above Kasparas as a prospect / at this stage. Is VJ more athletic? Yes. But who would you rather trust to make a high-level decision based on his awareness of his teammates?

That is actually a great question. I am a huge Tre Johnson fan. I love the way he scores.

What it comes down to for me is the defense of Edgecombe and he is a great in-game athlete. Jazz is in such a need of a stopper and I think Edgecombe can be that and then give some very good offense that is what puts him a step higher for me. Also, the reason I wouldn't complain taking VJ at #3
