Jackpotting Around 31 - Mailbag Time

I kind of debated making a "Should we stick with Collins and trade Lauri" thread. Wrote it all out and everything, but then deleted it.

Lauri is having a bad year, but his value is just undeniable and unique. A 7 foot Klay Thompson just changes the court in a way that few other players can.

I also dont really want a slew of questionable young talent to go with our slew of questionable young talent. If you can get a true blue chip rookie contract player for Lauri, then I would think about it, but that isnt Jabari Smith/Reed Sheppard (IMO).

I think teams should do more competitions for money for half-time shows. Take the money you would pay a performer, and grab people from the stands and have them do some basketball related competition for cash prize.

Agree... that stuff is fun. Just need a good in arena host tho.

I've legit had the thought that if you got something for Lauri and got Collins at 50% of the cost of Lauri... that might be something. Rather than offloading John for basically nothing.

If they really think this is year one of the rebuild they should shop Lauri pretty hard. I think that is a BS line to justify their half assed tanks but whatevs.

The problem is nobody is trading us a blue chip prospect for Lauri. Unfortunate but this is coming from the optimism king.

Haven’t finished but already have a lot of comments. The first one is if we’re going for it next year, the Jazz should really try to get their pick from OKC back before the season starts (or at the deadline if things are going very well).

Then we should just keep him.
Ya I still believe in Lauri.
Seems like many jazz fans now think he isn't very good anymore because of his performance this season.
I think his performance this season is part of tanking and when we aren't tanking we will be very glad to have him on the roster.

When you were taking about Harper you reminded me of a dream I had recently. We got the 2nd pick in the lottery and on draft night when we selected Harper they zoomed in to his face he looked so disappointed.

It was both a good and bad dream.

Nope, his value changed when he signed the massive extension he got. When he was making 17M a year he quite literally was the best value contract in the entire league.

His average annual salary going forward is 49M a year. That is fair value but it’s no longer a value contract. So he lost value based on that to me. It also makes it a lot harder to trade him because other teams have to match salary and a lot of the teams that would be interested are in the tax or over the apron.

Strange response to my post. Your post speaks almost entirely of value, money, and contract which I didn't mention any of.

I simply still believe that Lauri is an awesome player that we are going to be super glad we have when we start trying to win. That is was I posted about.

Not really. You were implying that Jazz fans are down on Lauri due to play which likely affects trade value? Considering you replied to the person replying to my post about value.

Nah, I was simply saying that jazz fans are down on Lauri for a subpar season and explaining that im not worried about his play during a tank season. He will be back to being an all star level player when we stop tanking. I only replied to a statement saying "they should just keep him" by jingled. I simply agreed that they should keep him because he will be an awesome part of the jazz winning lots of future games. His value or perceived value doesn't have any effect on my statements or feelings about Lauri.

But I do agree that his value is lower right now than before. More expensive and worse play and a year older definitely equals lower value so I agree with you. Just didn't think that really needed to be pointed out because it seems like a given to me.

Compared to his contract, no.

I completely agree. There has been a lot of overreactions to Lauri's down season. I think he just hasn't been locked in this season at all. The Jazz are 100% doing the right thing by tanking, but from Lauri's perspective I'm sure it's incredibly frustrating. The organization is forcing him to sit out a bunch of games even though he is completely healthy, and they are doing everything in their power to lose as many games as possible which makes the games he does play in utterly meaningless. He also isn't playing for a contract because he just re-signed, and he knows there is virtually zero chance of being an all-star or All NBA under these tanking circumstances. Basically, he's had absolutely nothing to play for this entire season. I really think once the Jazz start trying to win again and Lauri is motivated again, he'll look much more like the Lauri from his first two seasons with the Jazz and not the Lauri from this season.

I’m with you and Fish on this one. We’ll be glad if Lauri is still with us when we start competing again.
