Looking ahead to 2025-2026

If we get the top pick in the draft, what should we plan on for next season? (Please read the OP)

  • Stand pat, see how things go, adjust at the trade deadline

It seems no one wants Clarkson, Sexton or Collins at their current bag. I don't know if that changes this off season into next. I can see a lot of player movement from the Jazz this off season.
 
To paraphrase, none of the Jazz's six first round draft picks the last two years appear to be a foundational piece, the FO is hinging the success of their strategy on the sheer luck of winning the lottery, and buckle up for one more year of intentional sucking and 2-4 more additional years of sucking. Odds that this leads to a perennial playoff team more or less on par with the team the FO blew up a couple years ago, reasonable. Odds that this leads to the NBA championship, remote. But, man o man, the brilliance of it all is simply mind blowing. I'll take odds that six (give or take) years of sucking leads us more or less back to where we were when this whole sorry process began: a good, playoff team that may go 2-3 rounds deep but that'll never go beyond that.

OK, just thought of worst case scenario for next year and it made me a little sick just thinking about it.

What if the Wolves or Cavs have some injuries next year and unexpectedly are in the lottery and get a top 3 pick, but because Utah messes around they end up with the 9th pick, conveying it to OKC, meaning they can't swap.

I think you mean Twolves and Cavs. I think the Jazz are going to make damn sure they keep their pick next year, not just because it would convey to OKC, but because the top 3 or 4 guys in next year's draft look like game-changers. Jazz will finish with a bottom-4 record.

Whoops, yes, I've corrected it now.

Going back to the poll question in this thread. The majority of us, including myself, voted for the Jazz to stand pat and see how it goes next year and then adjust at the deadline accordingly. There is a chance that strategy lands us with the 9-12 pick, which would be kind of worst case scenario with that pick that we owe to OKC.
 
I don’t think the Jazz can blatantly tank their way to a bottom 3 record like they did this year. If that’s the plan, they’ll probably need to tear the house down to the studs and then burn the frame to the foundation to crap out at that level.

Get what you can out of Lauri, JC/JC and Sexton, then take the vets you get from them and trade them at the deadline. Make this offseason/trade deadline as interesting and exciting as 2022.

If we are could flip on a dime to just missing the play-in in the Western conference next season, that would be pretty cool actually and would show tremendous improvement with the tools we have. Like I have said often, we have plenty of players of late lottery talent. I wouldn't lose sleep over the pick.

Assuming the Jazz don’t trade away ANY of their young players yet, they’re already likely at 10 roster spots. Even if they trade Collins, Clarkson and Sexton I would expect the Jazz to have to use up at least 3 more spots on players coming back for salary- matching purposes. Add Lauri to the equation, and that’s 13/14 spots before even addressing non-guaranteed players, free agents and 2nd round picks. Will definitely make for an interesting offseason.

Nobody's trading for Lauri with his massive contract and bone-on-bone knee. Just forget it.

Another disastrous blunder by Ainge.
