How can we exploit a dumb franchise?

Im not sure whether this is about Lauri to Warriors or just about taking a chance on Kuminga.

I believe the former may not be possible at all anymore. Or maybe if they dump enough salaries so that whatever money they need to pay Kuminga in S&T to match Lauri keeps them under 2nd apron.

If that S&T money leads them past 2nd apron then the 2nd apron rules kick in and they cant take any salary back (nor could they aggregate multiple contracts).

Kuminga S&T is required in a Lauri deal, but if they add Moody+Hield they will have some room to work and remain under the second apron.

Btw does anyone know how the 2nd apron draft pick penalty wotks if you have traded picks?

The rule in Article VII says that if you pass the 2nd apron and the stay there for 2 of the next 4 years your first round draft pick gets pushed to the end of the first round.

That rule took effect this season, so that 4 year clock starts ticking for any teams that even shortly went past the 2nd apron this season.

If I were Dallas, I'd be open to moving my draft pick at #11 in a deal for someone who can help me sooner. Probably they'll bring in a point guard from somewhere, since Kyrie is out for the season.

The 11th pick could be worth chasing--e.g., Kasparas, Murray-Boyles, Bryant, etc.

The Warriors and Magic arent what I would call dumb franchises, at least not in the sense that they get played in trades.
Yeah, this is turning into a tangential discussion. Although I do think the Magic are dumb, their errors are about the things they don’t do rather than the things they do (which is usually what makes owners loud dumb). I guess you can’t be played in trades when you never make them.

The Warriors might be desperate because they should be. Lauri might be the perfect piece to get them across the finish line/extend their window.

Having him essentially be on a rolling team-option would be really valuable if only for salary matching/salary dumping ramifications.

Yeah....the only roadblock may be that Kuminga also has to agree, but I’m not sure he’s getting better than $38M guaranteed for just one season. He turns into a giant, expiring contract after that. I totally get the reservations about giving him long term money and relying on him to be a piece for the future….but as salary matching to open up what is probably one of our best trade partners I’m definitely open to it. Not many Lauri destinations to begin with.

I think it would leave us in a great situation. We have our pick this year, we hit the top of the draft next year, we’ve added future draft compensation for an aging team going all in, and we have this giant expiring contract that’s ideal for making a star trade. I think we stress about “the timeline” too much, but this would represent a coherent team building strategy.

I just feel like Lacob is too scared of getting played to get played that big.

Yeah I wouldn’t say the Warriors are dumb or that getting Lauri is a dumb move. But they put themselves on the clock and committed to winning now with the Jimmy move. And why shouldn’t they? Steph is their franchise and they should have already been doing this instead of messing around with the two timelines. They need to make the most out of this Kuminga situation and I think Lauri is about as good as it gets for them. We really wouldn’t be exploiting them which I guess is the point of this thread, but we’d be taking advantage of a team operating with some desperation.

As far as the magic….id just say they are dumb for not acquiring any shooters and rolling out Corey Joseph as their starter.

Here’s what I’ve learned over the last few years what good GMs do to dumb franchises:

1. Offer them good role players and late first round picks for generational talents.
2. Surround those generational talents with good talent and enjoy the fruits of your labors in the post season.
3. Meanwhile, watch the dumb franchise fritter away 3+ years of being unable to decide whether to tank or not and draft poorly. They draft players who lack motors, lack athleticism, or suffer major injuries. You see them fall flat on their faces every year in free agency. You laugh as they waste season after season playing joyless and meaningless games. Meanwhile your franchise plays important games and packs your arena with loud rabid fans throughout the month of May and June.

We’ve just gotta find a stupid GM to exploit. That’s all!

I don’t think it’s fear, they’re smart. Their asset management has been pretty awesome, notwithstanding that they kinda whiffed in their recent trips to the lottery.

Tbf, I do think they have had a rough 3 years. They won the championship, had the number 2 pick (after having the #7 pick the year before), and still found a way to mess that up. They really torched some prime years of Steph/Green and a wealth of young players/assets at the same time. I think what they've done recently by actually trying to win with their franchise players is good business and what they should have been doing. Jazz trying to lose, Warriors trying to win. We just make sense as trading partners even if it's not really the spirit of the thread.

Getting back to the thread topic, how many picks would you want for taking on Murray's contract? Assume it's Sexton+Collins heading to NOP?

I have a great plan. Draft well, give everything, make playoffs (and probably lose first round) next year (unfortunately also give OKC a ~20th pick. Will be great fun.

I hadn't thought about Key to ORL, but that would be an ideal landing spot for him. Key was once the chosen one, but I do think he has lost his luster a bit internally. Things can change quickly. We saw them dump Ochai after he was once "untradeable" and we've also seen the vibes on Kessler change drastically back and forth. It wouldn't surprise me if a Key trade is on the table.

We know Hardy loved Black before the draft, maybe that's something we revisit? If ORL still believes in Black, they have the pick compensation for Key and IIRC Key and Black are best buds so that's a nice fit.

It's a bit premature to say this, but there could be a situation brewing where Keyonte is made available for trade in the next year. If the Jazz draft outside the top 2 this year, they'll bring in Bailey, Edgecombe, Johnson or maybe Kon. That new player will probably be starting at the 2-guard within a few months. Collier has already shown he's a better pure PG, so Keyonte's minutes and touches could decline a bit this year. A year from now, Keyonte's camp will also start looking for a contract extension, and if they want something in the 9-figures range (like Anfernee Simons, for example), the Jazz may be more inclined to move Keyonte to a team that values him more than the Jazz do.

If Keyonte makes a solid 3rd-year leap this year, then the Jazz probably buy in and this is moot. Otherwise, Keyonte might want to go somewhere else where he can be a starter, and this would basically be the same story behind the Thunder trading Reggie Jackson to Detroit some years back, or similar to the Cavs sending Collin Sexton over to us.

I'd draw some parallels to the Kessler situation. The FO was super high on them after their rookie year, then they seemed to sour on them during their second year and both were benched by the end of the season. I think there are teams out there that might like Key more than we do, but there are also some teams who might just want a cheap 6th man under contract for the next two years. Lot of teams under a salary crunch.

I think DAL might really like Key, for example, as a Kyrie fill in. How would Nico value the 11th pick, for example, compared to Key?

Key would be a cheap PG for NOP and eventual replacement for CJ.

ATL supposedly had interest in Key....new regime but maybe he still has fans?

If DEN moves on from Murray (they don't have many pieces to play), would Key serve as a low salary alternative?
