whiteside

Whiteside sounds like another Koufos who is even more immature, can't shoot as well, but can jump better. I'd pass on him; too much of a risk. We already have two project bigs.

Another Koufos? Whiteside may turn out to be a bust, but their games seem nothing alike. For starters Whiteside was a big time shot blocker in college...

Can someone give opinion on Ed Davis ?

Great athlete lets him rebound well and block some shots, but has just average length for a PF (Milsap has a better wingspan). Very light, he will get pushed around until he fills out, which isn't always a guarantee. Given he is very raw with no jumper and limited post moves I don't like him. In 4 years he could be a very good player. But DWill is 25, want to get him help as soon as possible.

Babbit moves good for his size. He's got a smooth outside game, and can finish at the rim.

My biggest question to anyone that has seen him play a lot....
Can he play any defense?

This is the most important draft since D-Will (and if the D-Will draft isn't included, years before that). Drafting a big man (PF-C) appears certain. I just hope we draft a good defensive player. Who are the five best defensive PFs and Cs in the draft? The only thing I am concerned with toward Whiteside is the level of competition he faced.

Found this blurb from Thorpe:
No. 9 Utah Jazz

Need: What does a top-caliber team like the Jazz need? Depth, depth and depth. Their front line dealt with injuries all season, plus they might lose Carlos Boozer to free agency. Adding a center to back up aging sharpshooter Mehmet Okur seems to make sense, but they have talented young bigs in Kyrylo Fesenko (23 years old) and Kosta Koufos (21). So power forward is the bigger need, or a sharpshooting wing to work with undrafted starter Wesley Matthews. All the bigs we've mentioned (excluding Alabi), plus Hayward, are in play here. I think Henry and Babbitt are, too.

Value: The Jazz are well known as a team that prefers to bring its rookies along slowly, and rightfully so, as Utah typically is in playoff contention or better. So this pick is more about tomorrow than today. Because of that, Avery Bradley might end up being the guy here. He has terrific upside and could play next to Deron Williams on both ends of the floor. In five years, he could be better than most of the players taken ahead of him. Ford picks Monroe, who does have excellent passing skills that will fit in perfectly in Utah's offensive system. But can he handle Jerry Sloan's tough love? One last guy I love here is Patrick Patterson, if the Jazz look for a "ready to help us win a title now" guy. He'd play Paul Millsap's old role well as Millsap moves into the starting lineup for Boozer.

I disagree with Thorpe because not only because of the Boozer situation, but the Deron Williams contract situation. Need someone to produce now.

That, and he seems to be taking the "draft by need" stance, which is in direct opposition to the "best player available" philosophy most teams have adopted.

I disagree with Thorpe in that he said we "have talented young bigs in Kyrylo Fesenko (23 years old) and Kosta Koufos (21)".

Koufos is more PF than C. Same with Memo.
Fes may not be back. But even if he is he's our only true C.
Not to mention AK plays PF good enough for a backup. Maybe better than he plays the SF.

Jazz' biggest need is C. And a defensive one.

Who? I'm not sure Monroe can become a defensive player. So I'd rather go with Aldrich or Whiteside.

Udoh I think is a great good fit for the Jazz at a 4/5. athletic, good shot blocker, good rebounder, long, nearly 7 feet tall, aggressive, decent post up game, decent short to mid range jumpers, good attitude. He may not be a perfect player or future all-star, but we are drafting at #9, and I think he is a sure thing as a rotation player right away and a likely starter by his 2nd year.

They are definitely talented. Whether they will ever be able to perform well at the NBA level I'm not sure...I still think Koufus will turn into a nice rotation big, but Fes seems like he will never "get it".

Yeah, I still think Koufos can be good. I don't think Fes will be any better than what he is now.

I'd say its still Whiteside's job to lose. You have to think the Jazz are perfectly happy with Milsap as the full time PF especially with his impressive numbers in the playoffs this year - even against the Lakers. Also at the PF you can use AK, Memo, and Tomic in a couple years. At center though, Memo doesn't work and his defense will just get worse with that injury. Koufas is still a wildcard but has said himself he prefers playing PF as he's not a banger. Fes is an atrocious ft% shooter and doesn't block that many shots for having a 7'4 wingspan. He plays decent man defense against other bigs since he can't be backed down, but will require a raise to keep and not sure the Jazz want to spend their little remaining money on him.

Whiteside is an immature headcase of a project that may not even see significant PT for years. Not just no, but HELL NO!

I'll grant the immature-- but what makes you think Whiteside is a headcase?

As for the playing time- he is a capable of blocking shots and rebounding now. The rest of it is the problem.

IMO the top 5 defensive bigs are Favors, Whiteside, Davis, Udoh and Aldrich. I don't see Whiteside or Aldrich ever developing an offensive game.

And the profiling continues … https://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2010/06/slamonline-mock-draft-cole-aldrich-no-9

your list is a good summary of the players in the "Duds" list in Hollinger's draft rater column (sorry, you can't see it if you're an Outsider):

https://insider.espn.go.com/nba/dra...?columnist=hollinger_john&page=PERDiem-100521

36. Aldrich
50. Udoh
54. Davis
62. Whiteside

in a nutshell, he projects a player's PER by using their college stats and then tweaking the numbers somehow.

i know, i know, everyone hates Hollinger here. but he backs his projections up by showing past predictions and results, and they look pretty convinving (to me, anyway).

his numbers like several other guys that have been linked to the Jazz pick:

4. Monroe
5. Favors
6. Henry
7. Babbitt
8. Aminu
9. Johnson
14. Orton
17. Hayward
