Is there any reason for Portland to pay EVEN MORE for Matthews than they already have? Not that I can see. If they want to dump those players anyway, they can, but not just to make sure they can pay Matthews $34 million.

Only had enough cap space to keep one, and Matthews was obviously the first choice.
Korver already agreed to the Bulls before that ridiculous Matthews offer. If he knew Matthews offer would be in the stratosphere he would have made a 5 million/year deal to Korver on July 1st.
 
Definitely not keep Matthews now that we have taken on Jefferson's salary. Oh well, wish we could have locked him up on the cheap for a couple more seasons.

If this is true, the Jazz FO wasn't doing its job. They knew Matthews would get at the very least, a good offer... and they should have been prepared for the possibility of the offer he did get. It isn't like Korver ran off and signed with the Bulls right away. He made it clear his first choice was to stay in Utah, hinted at a 'hometown discount'. Maybe, if the Jazz hadn't been the LAST of more than a dozen teams to contact Korver when FA opened... and maybe had they kept an open line of communication with him, then he would have waited a bit longer before signing elsewhere.

Then again, I still feel that the Portland offer sheet to Wes was purposely timed after Korver did sign elsewhere, limiting the Jazz's options.
 
1) Finally hearing some actual numbers on Matthews' offer sheet: $5.69 million signing bonus and $3.45 million of 1st year salary up front.

2) Jazz would be responsible for $9.14 upfront payment as a result if they decided to match.

3) Matthews' base salary is $4.626 million, $4.996 million, $5.366 million, $5.736 million and $6.107 million.

4) Matthews still would count $5.765 million for cap/tax purposes since that's the salary slot his contract is fitting into.

I really hope we dont match. Seems like a great idea now, but I think we might regret it 25 million years down the road.

On the other hand, it could be a nice expiring to trade at the deadline to a team looking to clear cap space for the 34002011 A.D. free agent class.

...the Jazz are NOT going to match that ridiculous offer! Way too much money and years for a 1st year player! Let the Blazers bury themselves with overpaid mediocre players that won't get them past the 1st round! We can make the playoffs and get past the 1st round with virtually no talent and Deron Williams!

So his first year salary would be around 5.8M(times 2 for being over the Luxury Tax) plus the bonus(3.4M) to make its 15M for the first year? Actual cost?
 
Thanks, mikenielsen, for the info. It ain't my money, so I say drop the 9 million on him. The rest of the contract seems reasonable save for that, and we certainly need a solid 2 (I don't see Shannon as a solid 2 and Mason's stats certainly don't wow me). Then I'd see about signing Brewer back cheaply and let them compete for the job. The Jazz would be coughing up some $$$ this year, but only this year, from what I see. I then think they could re-sign AK, which they should do, and have a pretty damned good team going forward.

You'd start Hayward(with zero experience) over AK? Really?
 
Yes. Yes I would. And I would play Evans at the 2 to further mystify the opposition.

Actually, I'd start AK, in the fantasyland of my coaching the Jazz, to begin the season and move him back to the bench as soon as I was sure Haywood had finished puberty.
