Following potential 2012 draftees

I also concur with those voicing their misgivings about Barnes. He's frustrating so maybe he falls to the Jazz (doubtful) but right now I think I prefer PJIII. If only he could play SF. Maybe he can. ...?

Don't think Jones can play SF.

And I would definitely take Barnes ahead of him. Jones has more upside, no doubt, but I'd bet every cent I have that he never reaches his full potential. Barnes probably will, however high that may be.

How the **** did we go from lottery pick to 2nd rounder? Let's disregard that Manu is arguably the best international player after Dirk in the history of the NBA and arguably the biggest steal in NBA history.

I'll argue a little

Toni kukoc
Drazen petrovic (who is one of the best)
Vlade divac (I know he played for the lakers and I hate him but he was very good)
Arvidas sabonis

Just to name a few off the top of my head and petrovic in his prime was better then Ginobili.

Not following. Perhaps had to many drinks tonight. If we have two lottery picks and include Evans that would give us 7 real young guys next year. So i say take a flyer on the best intl player when we pick in the second.

Because there aren't any lottery talent euros in this draft.

FWIW, NCJazz, I hear that you are saying 'in the 2nd round.' I still do not agree, because 2nd round or not, you still take your perceived BPA (or fill a roster need), and not take BIPA. (Best Intl Player Available)

So looking at a recent mock, I saw two first round names I haven't heard before.

Moe Harkless.

Tony Mitchell.

Both are likely threes but the latter actually sounds more intriguing because of his sick athleticism, relentless motor (10+ rebounds, 3 blocks per game), and improvement, as he's shooting 56%/44%/74% as a frosh which wasn't really a projected part of his game. He doesn't have much penetration but with Burks and Hayward, I'm not sure that's as pressing a need as it once was. Mitchell sounds like an intriguing guy at 6'8" with long arms at the three for us should he move up draft boards more and a couple guys withdrawal from this year's draft.

I was talking about Mitchell a couple pages back. No idea why he isn't a top 5 or lottery pick. There's got to be something he cant do or a major weakness that is holding him back from the lottery. The dude is maybe the most athletic in the draft- 41 inch vertical. He has a 7-4 wingspan. He's also just a freshman.

He may even stay in school so h can polish his game and get into the lottery

I asked a couple guys about Mitchell last night. The two main adjectives were athletic and raw. They said he has the raw talent and elite athleticism. He just gets lost on both sides of the court with an 'emerging' understanding of the game. Both said that of he comes out he should go late 1st/early 2nd and based on potential alone.

I don't know that that helped me with my opinion, but thought I'd share what these guys said (these guys are seed scouts .. not lead scouts but feeders, or scout's scouts).

Here are a couple of videos I found on Mitchell, the last being HS highlights. His body reminds me of a taller/longer Corey Maggette.

I like what I see in that he's aggressive, athletic, defensive minded, and pretty fluid in how he moves. A rich man's Ronnie Brewer with a better shot. He's shooting less than two threes a game but 45% is 45%. As a frosh. And this tells me he knows how to pick his spots rather than chuck.

Non-sense, but thanks for arguing. The simple breakdown is that Petrovic never broke a 20 PER (or even got that close) and that Ginobili has every single year since his second season. Ginobili is one of the most underrated players in NBA history. A better defender than Bowen and has no weakness to his offensive game. As ambidextrous a player as there ever has been on the perimeter (can operate on both sides of the floor equally, can use both hands with equal effectiveness, extremely rare).

Petrovic was a better pure shooter. I have nothing bad to say about the guy whatsoever. But Ginobili is the better player.

Agree totally except that he's a better defender than Bowen. That's simply not true.

Many defensive metrics disagree. There's a tendency for reputation for defense to go especially far since there aren't any great single or simple defensive stats to help people really know. Because of that, it would be just as difficult for me to prove my point. So maybe I'll just say that Ginobili is and has been a fantastic defender and could hang his hat on just that if he wasn't an almost perfect offensive player on top of that.

Jeff Taylor is really impressing me. I've never actually watched him play, I'm pleasantly surprised at how much more complete his game is than I thought he'd have. Definitely a more capable/willing ball-handler than I was expecting (doubtful he'd be asked to do much, but it's always better to have and definitely one of the more useful single skills a player at any position can have).

I wholeheartedly agree with this. Raja for example, his defensive prowess is very much overblown, IMO.

Thanks for the links. Could be a bigger Ronnie Brewer, or even a Josh Smith. If KOC wants to shoot for the stars rather than a "system" guy, Mitchell would be worth a look.
