Not Picking Knight: Mistake or No?

Knight's a nice player. He'll be a consistent fringe starter in the league for a lot of years. He'll hit some clutch shots to win games. He'll have a couple years that he really shines. About what he was drafted to do .. not number 3 quality. Kanter will do more and would be doing more with 32 minutes per game.
This must be your dream thread..... You get to talk about Kentucky guys without the fear of being called a homer:D

I want them all to be great, I really do .. and regardless for what team. But I am real about what a player will, or will not, do .. and Jazz first.

PKM, tell me if I'm wrong but isn't Knight really sg playing pg. Also Verlin said Knight would be the best pg in three years in the draft which does include Irving. I hope I misunderstood what he is saying on that.

I don't think Verlin meant to include Irving. Knight is a PG that is a scoring more than pass-first. He's not a SG trying to play point. Nor is he a combo guard, in the negative sense of the phrase. He is simply the shooting vs. passing side of a point. Holy damn I confused myself, lol.

I honestly don't think this is an outrageous question. There aren't many 20 and under PG's averaging numbers like 13/3/3. Yes, Kanter is a great player and his numbers are stunted because of his playing time. It's not crazy to prefer Kanter here. But I think Knight is going to put up bigger numbers.

I just don't like a player that has an obvious flaw for his position.

Boozer - undersize/defense
Korver - defense
Brewer - shooting
Stuckey - shooting

You get my drift.. and Knight playing a PG in the NBA I believe has 2 obvious flaws, namely quickness and ball handling ability. He's a heady player and a good shooter, I give him that. But he remains a SG in a SG body, trying to play the point. You take a punt on a guy like that when you're picking #8 onwards but you just don't take him at #3.

Kanter has tremendously more upside and I don't think it's even close.

Craig,

I'm curious how many games you've watched of Brandon Knight this season? I watch alot of basketball but tonight was the first complete Pistons game I've seen. I've watched all 41 of Kanter's regular season games as well as 1 preseason game. That sample size of Knight makes me nowhere near qualified to say who is the better player right now - and frankly I could care less.

These guys aren't even two-thirds through their rookie season - they're just getting started. It's foolish to try and determine now if Knight would have been the better pick just because their teams played against each other. Wait 2 years and then we'll see what kind of players Kanter and Knight have become.

I realize that this is a small sample size, hence why the discussion of what they could project to be is interesting. Obviously with the largest sample size, the end of their careers, this topic wouldn't be interesting. We don't know, and that's why I'm asking the question. Thanks for dropping by my email.

Lol. A d this is why you are the best Craig on this board.

Wow @ the question.

I liked Knight a lot but a quality big man is always more valuable unless you are talking about game changing talent.

In fact Kanter has turned out to be a game changing talent so we fixed that question haven't we?

A: Big guy is willing to get in the way of penetrating guards. Check
B: Big guy is punishing the opposing players and making them wish it wasn't him. Check.
C: Big man rebounds the ball. Enes has been an absurd force rebounding the ball. I love this guy.
