.....and can you believe this BS? “That’s who we are,” Utah coach Tyrone Corbin said. “Right from the beginning of the year, we knew we had to play our young guys to get them some experience on the floor, to develop them with our veteran group of guys.” Corbin was as stubborn as Sloan when it came to playing the young guys over the vets this year! It wasn't until he ran out of players due to injury that he HAD to play the young guys! Nice win, anyway!

That is the definition of "talking out both sides of your mouth".

I think Corbin has done a good job of playing young guys. He just brought them along slowly. It's easy to say he should have been playing like this all year, but maybe they weren't ready early on and it would have stunted their growth. By holding them back a bit, he unleashed them when they were ready to perform. They have done well and their confidence is high. He unleashes them to early and they do poorly, grow to be tentative.

You are being too nice to Ty!

Yes.. and not to mention "eager to perform" or "eager to impress" or even "eager to finally get to play".

Also learning the game on the bench wouldn't have hurt. An example is what Blake Griffin has done after his injury year.

This. By holding them back and making them play against 2nd tier players, he got their confidence up.

There was a time though about 6-7 games ago till 3 games ago that I was ticked off that Favors and Kanter were getting scrub minutes. Added on to that was Bell's 26 minute 0-2 performance after his "meeting" and I was really ticked at Ty and KOC. I'm still not sure what'll happen when Bell and Al come back, but youngsters better see time on the floor.

Hmmmm. I just watched the game on League Pass and Kobe was way off on so many shots, barely getting the rim, that I wondered - is he missing on purpose as a way of saying FU to management for trading away his li'l buddy Fish? It's not like he hasn't acted out on the court before, remember when he responded to criticism of him shooting too much by refusing to shoot at all?

Perhaps the fact that there was no summer league and training camp had something to do with the fact that Ty didn't play the young guys too much until now. The other factor is if he had just handed over the team to the young guys and they struggled then he might have had a mutiny on his hands. Ty is in a tough position with having so many players that want minutes. I haven't always liked his distribution on playing time but if he continues to play the young guys more minutes then I will give him the benefit of the doubt that this was his plan all the time.

For me, the real test for Corbin will be what he does with the younglings after Bell and big Al get back. If Burks rattles off another 6 game streak of DNP Coaches Decision then I think we have a problem. Just my opinion, but Burks should be getting 15-20 minutes a game (if not more) after what he has shown the last couple of games.

He probably has to start them. The old adage of "You don't lose your job due to injury" usually holds true with most coaches. He will probably give Bell the start, but hopefully he gets pulled early and only plays 10-ish minutes.

Same with Al, too many times he plays until the 1 or 2 minute mark of the 1st and 3rd. Needs to come out around the 4 minute mark instead.

...exactly! And all these other posters making excuses for what Corbin did, well, it's just a bunch of HOGWASH! The ONLY reason, the one and ONLY reason, the kids got the playing time they did recently was the injuries that hit the Jazz. He had NO OTHER OPTIONS! So they can say what they want about Ty this and Ty did that "to help their confidence" and so forth. Not true at all!

Blind adherence to old adages are a dumb way to coach a team. (I know you're just citing it, not endorsing it.) It's a stupid old adage anyway. If it were universally applied, maybe it would be Wally Pip in the Hall of Fame and not Lou Gehrig. There's absolutely no reason NOT to replace the injured player, if the other player is better. Particularly if the injured player sucked to begin with, a la Raja Bell.

I do not fault Corbin for playing Big Al and Milsap as much as he has. (But one of them will have to go in the offseason.) I do, however, fault him for giving so much playing time to Bell, Howard, and Miles, but in particular Bell. I don't see any reason to play him more than 5-10 minutes a game, barring injury, for the remainder of the season. To me, this is the acid test of Corbin's commitment to the youth movement. Fail this test, and he has absolutely no credibility in my eyes, despite what lip service he gives to developing the youngsters.

IAWTP. There is absolutely no reason Bell should have been getting as many minutes as he did...except if it was with the intent to showcase him for a trade. Hard to know since Raja has been "injured" since the deadline. It will be very interesting when he returns to see how many minutes he gets and if Ty gives any more DNP-CD's to Alec.

Makes sense to me. Just 'cause a young guy plays great today doesn't mean he'll be great tomorrow, nor does it mean he would've played great the day before. Young guys have a LOT to learn and can only take in so much at a time. Gonna be erratic 'til they get experience against AND with more experienced guys. Coach sees them in every practice; we don't. I'm rollin' with Coach Ty's judgement...
