Clarification regarding Utah's 2012 first round draft picks

I haven't really paid attention to this yet because I've just been focusing on the season itself. But now, as things wind down, I'm starting to pay closer attention. So, let me get this straight:

The Warriors have to finish with the seventh-worst (or even worse) record in the league in order for us to obtain their first round pick in this year's draft...and...the Jazz have to make the playoffs this season in order to keep our own first round pick.

SO...

If the Warriors end up with the eighth-worst record, or in fact have a better one, we won't get their first round pick this year...and...if we miss the playoffs, we lose our first round pick this year...so we could very well end up without a first rounder at all this year.

So, all we have to do is win out and pull a Tonya Harding on Steph Curry, David Lee, Klay Thompson, and Andrew Bogut.

GSW is top 7 protected so after the lottery if that pick is #8 or lower the Jazz get it.

As for the Jazz pick it is top 14 protected this year. So if the Jazz make the playoffs they lose their pick.
 
You're right about the Jazz pick. But as far as GSW pick is concerned, it is the opposite of what you said. If they end up with pick 1-7 the Jazz get nothing. So they need to finish with the league's 8th worse record or better for the Jazz to get their pick (or finish with a worse record, but get unlucky in the lottery).
 
I am fairly certain that you all have the Jazz pick backwards.

Yes, we need a miracle healer right now for those two. Perhaps Jerry Falwell? GS frontcourt maybe the worst in the NBA right now.
 
You're right. I didn't even read the part about the Jazz pick. If you're a fan that wants to keep our pick, then you're rooting for NO PLAYOFFS.

your wording is confusing.
"The GS pick is top 7 protected " is clear.

Jazz might get two picks, one only if they do not make the playoffs, the other only if GS does not get a top 7 pick.
 
What is also important, and I do not know, is what happens in the future.....
If we don't get GS pick this year , do we get it next year?
If Wolves don't get the Jazz pick this year, do they get it next year?
Unfortunately, this is where it gets complicated.

looks that way, but then we'd probably get 2 1st round picks the next year, but those picks might be more like 14 and 28, not 8 and 10.

Yes, the Jazz are going to kick *** next year, I said it!

Not in the first round. This is why a lot of us not to thrilled about getting an 8th seed. In a normal year who cares about picking two spots apart, but this year it means no pick and with GS current lineup them getting down to 6-7 is a real possibility. Bogut nor Curry may not play again this season.

We also have Chicago's 2013 2nd round pick.
