What's new

Matthews: Jazz never made me an offer. I would have accepted less.

Oh good gosh. You guys need to stop bitching about Matthews, he's gone. We've got Raja Bell and Gordon Hayward instead now.

Gambled and lost

If he really was absolutely wanting to stay with the Jazz, he could have had his agent call the Jazz before meeting with Portland with a offer of what he would play for. He rolled the dice and lost of the Jazz matching the offer, but he has over 30 million reasons to get over it. lol

The Jazz are doing everything right this offseason. Would love to have Matthews, but irregardless They are heading in the right direction.

This is the bad side of these young guys dealing with agents. An agent is ALWAYS gonna push for more $$$. If a player wants to stay with a team, he needs to get tough with his agent and tell him that his FIRST PRIORITY is to stay for a "reasonable" salary. I have to wonder if Wes just let his agent do what comes naturally; look for the most $$$... Too late now; really hated to lose him... Hopefully Wes learns from this and doesn't just sign whatever his agent lays in front of him...

I like Wes, but I don't feel sorry for him or his paycheck. And I don't believe it's as simple as "make me an offer and I stick around." I think he's a little hurt that the Jazz didn't fight for him, so now he's trying to spread the hurt around a bit.

He'll live and the Jazz will be just fine.

Wes got a great chance to play from the Jazz, Utah actually continued to trust that he would perform, He played great, Season ends Utah wants to sign him but you let the market decide a players, like that, value. Portland totally OVERPAID and "WES SIGNED IT" now he is disappointed that he realized he wont be a starter or getting as many mins. Its sad that he won't continue to develop as much, but I don't feel sorry for someone who has 34 million reasons to enjoy Portland. Loved ya wes, but don't act like you would of taken less money to stay, YOU SIGNED THE CONTRACT.

Wow#2 tonight for me.

Borat, come on out. You were right about KOC not talking with him at all. I stand (sit) corrected. Need to call Hopper.

1. The Jazz assummed they knew his market value - they were wrong.
2. Wes is DEFINATELY bummed in that article - or at least they cut the article to portray that. Wow. Wow. Wow. "I would have stayed for less" (paraphrase...) unbelieveable. he is sad to be in portland. Wow...

Do I get triple the rep power for being right on this? Mods (or whoever), make it happen!

Sucks to lose Wes, especially now that is evident we could have had him for less, but of course we wouldn't know that if we never negotiated with him. The good news is KOC has finally awaken this Monday and is making some solid moves. Granted because he waited, he almost lost out on Jefferson, but he did come through in the end, which is what matters. Raja Bell is also a good signing, and might work out even better short term than Wes.

You're a doufus! You do realize the Jazz tried to get Jefferson at the trade deadline AND during the draft? How is it that he waited???

Since you seem to be needing help understanding, we in fact DID NOT get Jefferson at trade deadline, and DID NOT get Jefferson during draft. Talks heated up only on Monday when Dallas failed to reach agreement on Dampier/Jefferson exchange and AFTER Wolves got Beasley. Need a link for this or you get it now?

Don't panic, Matthews will someday return to the Jazz in the future, just like Thurl Bailey, Greg Ostertag, David Benoit, Howard Eisley, and now Raja Bell.

I'm going to have a Jazz-induced insomnia this evening...

Harcher, I'm not so fast to concede this matter for the following reasosn:

1. I'm not gunna call Matthews a liar, because I don't know what happened. It was reported that his agent told the Jazz they would accept no less than the maximum. That could be true and Matthews might not have been fully aware of it if (as players presumably do) he let his agent do his talking for him. If KOC denied this (I don't expect him to address it either way, but he might, who knows), I would give more credibility to his version. I would at least know he was there, and actually heard what was, and was not, said.

2. You suggest that Matthews claims that: "I would have stayed for less" (paraphrase...)," but, as pointed out, that is not what the article says. It quotes Matthews as sayin that if they had made a fair offer, he MIGHT have accepted. By his own definition the offer would have been "fair" but he clearly leaves open the possibility that he would have nonetheless continued to demand a presumably "unfair" (to the Jazz) contract offer, using Portland as leverage to extract "unfair" concessions. The very phrasing smacks of "seller's remorse."

3. Nothing whatsover prevented Matthews and his agent from telling the Jazz what (lower) amount he would be willing to accept, but he doesn't even begin to claim to have done that? If he means what he says in this story, my question would be: "Why not?" There are two parties here, and the Jazz are only one side of it. Neither is prohibited from approaching the other with an offer.

4. It really just doesn't make sense for KOC to simply refuse to have any discussions with Matthews' agent. The suggestion goes beyond being just "non-sensical." It sounds absurd to me, and I would be hesitant to give such a suggestion immediate credence based on a statement Matthews was reported to have made today.

Damn. You got me. I thought you were actually a serious poster but you're just trying to get a rise out of me. Nice. I applaud you. :)

Funny how things work eh? We had to wait til Boozer signed somewhere, Minnesota had to wait for Bosh,Wade and Lebron to commit to Miami so they could trade Beasley. Once they got Beasley it made dealing Jefferson away possible. We use Boozers TPE and the Memphis pick ( KOC brilliance ) and our own 1st round pick and a D-leaguer to get Jefferson. It's magical how that all worked out. I guess if KOC gets all the blame he should get all the credit.

Edit: Tried to give you + rep for suckering me into this. I gots to spread it around. Sorry.

Of course not. Just like you never conceded Dwill was frustrated even when pointed an article, where he actually said it. Like I said before, on the basketball court every time you get dunked on, you must be screaming: "in your face, two points for me, you can't stop me." Eh?

KOC SHOULD get all the credit for Jefferson, and I was the happiest to see it go down. After all, I've been posting multiple posts a day that we should make this move for a week before "talks heated up this Monday". But yes, we were fortunate all pieces fell into place, like big 3 going to Miami, Beasley trade, Cuban playing hardball with Wolves, etc... Result is what matters though. KOC delivered here. What you seem to be missing is that talks heated up this Monday, which is when the deal got done. Talks at trade deadline and draft fell through.
