I was under the impression that Hayward had a better rookie season than Burks. However, Burks has comparable stats in most areas. I find that surprising, but considering how much Hayward developed between his rookie and sophomore year, and given the lack of training camp prior to this season, what can we expect of Burks going forward?

Burks:

GP MPG FGM-FGA FG% 3PM-3PA 3P% FTM-FTA FT% RPG APG BLKPG STLPG PFPG TOPG PPG
56 15.8 2.5-6.0 .420 0.2-0.8 .286 1.7-2.4 .716 2.2 1.0 0.1 0.4 1.4 0.9 7.0

Hayward:

GP MIN FGM-A FG% 3PM-A 3P% FTM-A FT% REB AST BLK STL PF TO PTS
72 16.9 2.0-4.1 .485 0.5-1.0 .473 1.0-1.3 .711 2.0 1.1 0.3 0.4 1.5 1.0 5.4

Burks has had a more consistent rookie season. Maybe you don't remember, but Hayward was god awful for the 1st half of the season.

Not sure how to read this one exactly. I think Burks has shown the talents that he has much more consistently than Hayward did in his rookie season. Hayward has more raw skills than Burks though (IMO). Hayward blossomed and showed much more of his abilities this year. I expect more of the same from Burks next year, but I'm not expecting a huge breakthrough. To have that sort of breakthrough, Burks will need to add facets to his game which he doesn't have (or at least hasn't shown this year or in college). I would love to see that happen, but it's definitely not what normally happens in this league.

I hope he proves me wrong because Burks developing into that type of player is exactly what the team needs.

This. Hayward only started to show something in March and April. Burks has had flashes all season long.

I would say Burks has more raw skills than Hayward, with more confidence. Hayward had more refined skills, with less confidence. I think Burks' confidence has allowed him to have a decent rookie season, rather than slipping into being terrible like Hayward did much of his rookie season.

I agree about Burks' confidence, but disagree about the skills. I think Hayward has a more complete game. Burks has shown primarily that he can get to the basket and pick up fouls. His outside game has been spotty at best. He also doesn't play within the offense very well. He always wants to shoot and I feel like he forces it quite a bit. I wouldn't go as far as saying he's a black hole, but I don't think his decision making is that great yet.

Hayward, however, had no confidence last year and would always defer to someone else. But anyone who had seen him play in college knew that he had a huge skill set and just had to adjust to the NBA game and boost his confidence. There is nothing about Hayward's play this year that surprises me. It was all there already.

I guess my definition of raw skills is a little different. With Burks, I think he's showing us everything he's got right now. Anything else is going to need to be added to his game.

A full training camp will do wonders for both Gordon and Alec.

I hope Gordon can avoid an early slump, like he had this year, and pick up right where he's left off. If he can have a whole season of play, like March and April numbers, he'll be one of the most solid wing players the Jazz have ever had. I hope he focuses on rebounding more next season.

Burks will probably struggle a bit next year too. He really needs to bulk up a bit and work on his shot. I don't see him being a great man defender, aside from stealing the ball. But he should be a good rebounding wing and will get to the line per usual. If he can learn his spot in the offense he'll be able to do what "good" CJ has done but hopefully more consistently.

It is hard to compare also because I feel dwill didn't like Hayward and froze him out at times and that didn't help with his confidence but after the trade Hayward started to come on strong. So I think that messed up the numbers some.

What clued you into that? For me it was when DWill threw the ball at his head and started yelling at him.

What i get from those #'s is that Burks shoots a lot more with much lower %'s. I hope he can become a more efficient player and shoot better by learning when and where to take his shots. Because those %'s make a world of difference to me in the effectiveness of both of these 2 players.

Is he the next CJ Miles? Sounds like people are fearful he is going to be a chucker.

Not saying that at all. Haven't seen Burks putting up ill-advised jump shots for the most part. I think he needs to improve on his decision making when driving to the basket. Sometimes there's too much traffic and he really should pass. It's a problem, but it's a much better problem.

He needs to learn how to read, then attack. Not the opposite.
