What's new

This article makes*a*LOT of sense!

if the jazz hadn't had their february lull, i think corbin would be getting some COY votes. voters love the story of a coach whose team exceeded expectations without a true star, but i think it hurt his case that the jazz fell out of the playoff picture and then scrapped to get back in it. if they had stayed in the 5 or 6 spot that whole time i think there would have been a lot more "look what ty corbin is doing" press, although certainly not enough for him to WIN the award.

I dissagree.
jazz are in the playoff inspite of corbin.
not saying he is a bad coach, maybe overtime he will elarn. but a different coach would have given jazz 8-14 more wins.
on the other hand a different coach might also have given jazz 8-12 wins less

So if we had a different coach we would be the best team in the league (14 more wins with 14 less losses would make us tied with Chicago)? I'm going to have to neg rep this post for more than the usual amount of stupidity. I would like to see any "top tier" coach make a team as mediocre (and young) as Utah the best team in the league without training camp in a lockout shortened season.

I could see an argument that a top tier coach could possibly give us 3-5 more wins, but a different coach could easily gives us 3-5 more losses.

I think our players realized that Ty is actually a little bit dumb - do not pay attention on his occasional stupid decision, try to leave with that and take care of business on the court.

I could name 8 wins more the jazz could have gotten 14 more wins is a stretch though. with simple things like situational subs. but 8 more wins could have been achieved easy

that's idiotic. you have no way of knowing that if he had subbed the way YOU wanted him to it would have led to a win.

a team without a clear superstar is on the verge of finishing the year 6 games above .500 despite major injuries and a couple of young guys not progressing as quickly as we had hoped. if you really don't think SOME of the credit for that belongs with corbin, then you're just trying not to like the guy.

You can do that for any team. I could name 8 games the Jazz had no business of winning at all.

How many teams in the playoffs this year had no representation at the all-star game? 1. The Utah Jazz (if we make it). Every other team had at least 1 player in the All-Star game. That's a huge accomplishment and points to how well Corbin has done as a coach this year.

all star game is your argument.
it's a glorified pick up game.

it's more a popularity contest rather than the 24 best players

think back to the first part of the season, when really none of the four were playing as well as they are now.

- it was march before burks had earned a regular rotation spot, thanks largely to a shot-happy and inefficient january (1 FGA per 2.3 minutes, 37% shooting)
- the only thing kanter did with consistent success in the early part of the season is rebound. he was completely afraid to touch the ball, which is why his shooting was 46% before the break, 54% after.
- favors and hayward didn't start playing consistently until recently. march 22-25 was the first time favors put together three consecutive double-figure games, and his foul rate early was atrocious and kept him from playing more. and through march 26, hayward's averages in the game following his 18+ nights were 7.8 points on 35% shooting. since then, he's averaging 13.7 on 50% shooting in the game after an 18+ performance, and he has had double digits in 13 of the last 14 games.

short version: in january, burks and kanter barely looked like rotation players, while hayward and favors looked like the lack of summer/fall camps had hurt their development. now, burks and kanter are player major roles on a near-playoff team and the other two look just about ready to explode to the next level.

I have to agree with Nerd. A lot of people on this board expected Burks to contend for ROY, or at least be a top 10 rookie this year. The expectations were up and down, but I think most thought he would be a better offensive player than he is now.

Not saying they suck, but a lot of people here thought they would be doing more.

Isn't that the very definition of progression? They struggled early and that was dissappointing. But they are all playing better now and in the case of Hayward and Favors they are showing real evidence that they could anchor this team going forward.

I must not be one of those people. I don't expect much from rookies. And I have been very satisfied with the progression of our young 4 this season. I wanted more from them early. But frankly only Hayward was really given much opportunity early. They all have things they need to work on. But what young player in the league doesn't?

yes, this is what i meant... not meant as a dig at all... just that there were some ups and downs and those four weren't playing this well four months ago. that corbin managed through that, gradually developed his young assets, and at the same time won enough basketball games to be in this position has to be considered impressive. maybe not impressive on a pop/tibs/vogel sort of level, but impressive nonetheless.
