the goal is to win a championship. if the jazz aren't going to win a championship in the next 2-3 years, then nash doesn't make sense as he only gets in the way of the goal.

Interests me. But how would this affect Hayward on the offensive end?
If we got the GS pick and signed Steve Nash then I'd go straight to step 2: championship run.
Nash, Favors, Sap, Jefferson, Burks, Hayward,
Trade GSW pick and Kanter for 2 solid wings who can either shoot lights out 3 or guard and score (Iggy)
That team contends and I say screw the youth movement in 3 seconds or less (while keeping it intact).

this is what i'm talking about... i just plain don't get it. jazz have a great plan that's getting them loads of props... why ditch the plan and sacrifice assets just to be slightly better in the short term and way worse in the long term??
Mortgage the future for now? Yes. Depends what Jazz could get for the #8 pick and Kanter though. Nash isn't coming here if Jazz don't trade for one more piece, so it's an all or nothing move. Besides, Favors, Hayward and Burks stay so the future is still good.
I look around the league and don't see a whole lot of options though. If OKC wins this year and can somehow be convinced to give Harden for GSW pick and Kanter and something more then yeah I do that in a heart beat.

My problem with getting Nash for 3 years is that he would be so good that not having him after the 3 years, we would be a bad team because everyone would be so used to having one of the best PG in the league spoon feeding them.
I guess what I'm saying is that if we do land Nash, I would want him to play as a mentor to someone so the art isnt lost.

develop kanter and get somebody good at #8, then put those guys together with favors, hayward, burks and whomever the jazz decide to keep out of al/paul and the jazz will be great for 10 years.
ditch kanter and #8 for a 38-year-old and a guy like iggy and the jazz will be great for 2 years, then be right back in "what now?" mode.

This is assuming Utah actually gets the GS pick. Nash would be around for three years, which is perfect if the Jazz get a PG in the 2013 draft. Remember, it took Stockton a couple of seasons before he was ready to start and the Jazz traded Green. Nash would have 1 year as the starter, with Harris traded before the season or at the deadline, 1 year as a mentor to a rookie who would be perfect getting 10-15 mins/per. Then in his final season, Nash would split minutes or even rest on the second night of back-to-backs, etc.

That strategy is great too. Let's call it what it is though. You're making a slow running prospect and an unknown #8 and making it sound like the golden goose when it's really a long shot gamble. The draft is deep, yes, but the players available 8 and later are in no way sure-fire. Also, Kanter may not pan out to be more than a role player.

Uhhh, it will make him better of course. Has Nash ever stunted a player offensively?
The only way I see this happening is if the Jazz dominate the playoffs and somehow make it to the conference finals at least. Nash would be impressed and view the Jazz as a team he could go to and be viewed as a key piece that put them over the hump.

Adding Nash to the roster AS PRESENTLY CONSTITUTED makes us very very dangerous. Imagine if Harris hadn't played like a sphincter for 40+ games... I think we would have been a 40-42 win team this year.
If you add Nash and get a couple of shooters (the second step isn't too hard), then, IMO, you have a championship contending squad. Call me a homer if you want. This doesn't mortgage the future for the now.
In other words, Wilbon is right. (as are Franklin, Numberica, Cy, etc.)
