Season Grades of the Utah Jazz

I don't know if we already have started something like this but what I want you to do is grade the players and eventually add a short comment why you gave this kind of a grade to a certain player and not a different one.

Enjoy...

Which Jazz player was the ... :
MVP? -
DPOY? -
MIP? -
6th Man of the year? -
Biggest surprise of the year? -
Biggest disappointment of the year? -

Meh.

So much to say, so little patience to type it out. I feel we played it safe all year. From the 'safe' hiring of Sidney Lowe, to the conservative rotations, to the seeming lack of fire.

My bottom line is this team has no leader. Not on the floor and not on the bench. Blast away, it's just an opinion.

MVP: Millsap
DPOY: Favors and or Hayward
MIP: Again, Favors or Hayward
Biggest surprise of the year: Raja Bell started so many games
Biggest disappointment of the year? CJ Miles' and Raja Bell's injuries weren't career ending.

Meh.

One that I share. This team needs that strong leader.

Here are my takes based on both expectations and performance.

Draft picks:
#3 – Enes Kanter - C (I was actually expecting more from Enes and am a bit worried about his athleticism. For the #3 pick, I had hoped for more.)
#12 – Alec Burks - A- (Very pleasantly suprised with Alec, better shooter than I had been lead to beleive.)

Trades:
Mehmet Okur to the New Jersey Nets for a future second-round pick and a trade exception - B+ (Needed to happen for the bigs to progress.)

Signings:
11 Earl Watson - B+ (I think Watson is a good backup to have around.)
8 Josh Howard - C+ (Very inconsistent, likely because of the injuries, but don't really want him back.)
6 Jamaal Tinsley -A-(Good pick up, I had low expectation for Jamaal and he exceeded all.)
3 DeMarre Carroll - A+ (Got him for nothing, and could be a piece of the future. Love hustle guys.)
2 Blake Ahearn - D (Worthless)

Players:
2 Blake Ahearn - see above
19 Raja Bell - F (Don't let the door hit you in the butt.)
10 Alec Burks - see above
3 DeMarre Carroll - see above
40 Jeremy Evans - B (Needs more PT)
15 Derrick Favors - A- (particularly near the end of the year)
5 Devin Harris - B (I like Devin, but this position needs an upgrade.)
20 Gordon Hayward - B+ (Saw improvement, but the playoff performance worried me.)
8 Josh Howard - see above
25 Al Jefferson - B- (Would not be opposed to a trade.)
0 Enes Kanter - see above
34 C.J. Miles - D - Bye :)
24 Paul Millsap - A- (Probably my favorite Jazz player)
6 Jamaal Tinsley - see above
11 Earl Watson - see above

The coach:
Tyrone Corbin - Incomplete (Overall okay, but I want to see the team after a full training camp).

Expectations:
Did the Jazz meet your expectations (8th seed in the West (36-30) and eliminated against the Spurs in the first round of the playoffs)? - Exceeeded expectations)

Which Jazz player was the ... :
MVP? - Millsap
DPOY? - Favors
MIP? - Favors
6th Man of the year? - Favors
Biggest surprise of the year? - Tinsley
Biggest disappointment of the year? - Kanter

Draft picks:
#3 – Enes Kanter - Pass. (I''m convinced that a rookie on the Jazz is neglected for the first two years. We will know if these guys are the real deal by there third year. I like Kanter's size. He is huge.)
#12 – Alec Burks - Pass. (Same is Kanter. We need to wait and see.)

Trades:
Mehmet Okur to the New Jersey Nets for a future second-round pick and a trade exception - (I approve this trade because it saves money for our owners. Broke owners are never a good thing. Just ask Sacramento. Grade: A)

Signings:

11 Earl Watson - C (He came in and met my expectations)
8 Josh Howard - C
6 Jamaal Tinsley - B-
3 DeMarre Carroll - B+ (If he gets a consistent spot up three he can become a solid role player.)
2 Blake Ahearn - C (He had a nice personal story)

Players:
2 Blake Ahearn - C
19 Raja Bell - F (He was lazy on defense in the beginning of the year. Raja has lost all his fire. I'm kind of bummed. I loved Raja his first stint with the Jazz.)
10 Alec Burks - Pass. (Rookie)
3 DeMarre Carroll - B+
40 Jeremy Evans - B (He seems to be content with his role as a spark off the bench. He does this role well BTW)
15 Derrick Favors - A (I love this kid. I get excited about watching the Jazz because of him. Hopefully he starts next year and learns a few new post moves.)
5 Devin Harris - B (I felt he was too inconsistent all year. He makes too much to be that inconsistent)
20 Gordon Hayward - B+ (Same as Harris, but Hayward is younger so I'm giving him some slack)
8 Josh Howard - C
25 Al Jefferson - B+ (His defense kills me. I almost lowered this to a B, but he produces)
0 Enes Kanter - Pass.
34 C.J. Miles - F. This one hurts. I've been waiting for this kid to turn into a Solid rotation player for years. I don't know why he is so inconsistent.
24 Paul Millsap - A- (Millsap still struggles with being undersized. I'm convinced that he is a perfect sixth man for off the bench though)
6 Jamaal Tinsley - B- (I expected nothing from him. I got something.)
11 Earl Watson- Heart A+; Talent C

The coach:
Tyrone Corbin - I never understood why he would wait nine minutes to begin coaching games; however, his team exceeded expectations. (B)

Expectations:
Did the Jazz meet your expectations (8th seed in the West (36-30) and eliminated against the Spurs in the first round of the playoffs)? - I didn't expect the Jazz to be in the playoffs. So, yes.

Which Jazz player was the ... :
MVP? - Al Jefferson
DPOY? - Favors
MIP? - Favors
6th Man of the year? - Favors
Biggest surprise of the year? - Carroll
Biggest disappointment of the year? - Miles

Draft picks:
#3 – Enes Kanter - B (Enes means "potential" in Turkish)
#12 – Alec Burks - B+ (Good pick by KOC, in my opinion. Hopefully will be a Jazz player for a long time.)

Trades:
Mehmet Okur to the New Jersey Nets for a future second-round pick and a trade exception - A- (Another big on this team for Corbin to have to "deal with". Grade gets a minus though because he could have helped with spreading the floor)

Signings:
11 Earl Watson - B- (Needed a backup that could run the point. Did the job okay, but teams never had to fear his shot.)
8 Josh Howard - C+ (Decent vet signing. Not sure of who else KOC could have plugged in here besides this guy.)
6 Jamaal Tinsley - B+ (Should have been the true backup to Harris, but was stuck as a 3rd stringer. His play made KOC look better for signing him.)
3 DeMarre Carroll - A- (Wow! Great find by KOC. Kid can play at this level and hopefully will be picked up this off-season)
2 Blake Ahearn - C (Hardly played...? Might have been a guy to help spread the floor against SA in the playoffs, but wasn't trusted enough by the coaches to get PT.)

Players:
2 Blake Ahearn - C (see above)
19 Raja Bell - D- (Can't fault him for having an overblown sense of what his skills are on the court. Should have helped the team more by conceding time to the rooks and mentoring them during timeouts.)
10 Alec Burks - B (Sadly [or not] is probably our most fearless player on the team. Never seemed to let the situation dictate his game.)
3 DeMarre Carroll - B+ (He showed mental and physical toughness that this entire team lacked. Was finding his niche on this team until Corbin killed it.)
40 Jeremy Evans - B+ (His high grade is because every time he got some playing time, he looked like he deserved to play. Why this guy is not being used more is beyond me. Complete failure by the coaches to make this guy fit somewhere—be it the 3 or the 4. Hopefully he doesn't get PT somewhere else and make us look stupid for giving up on him.)
15 Derrick Favors - A (Came into his own this year and has true All-Star potential. In a bigger market, maybe even "Superstar" potential.)
5 Devin Harris - B- (Had flashes of being a real drive-to-the-hoop-and-create type of player that this team needs, but was never consistent enough to rely on. Is what he is.)
20 Gordon Hayward - B (I'll give Gordon the benefit of the doubt on his inconsistencies because he is young and can learn to correct that. Will he ever figure out his emotions and not get so down on himself when he misses a few shots or makes a bad pass? Time will tell.)
8 Josh Howard - C- (Played really well, then he got injured and played the exact opposite of "really well". Should have stayed in street clothes for the playoffs.)
25 Al Jefferson - B- (Big Al can give you points, no doubt about that, and probably gave this team 5-6 wins that they would not have gotten had he not been there. But the guy needs to grow by leaps and bounds in the "pass", "create", and "get to the foul line" department. It may be asking too much, but it seems like Al also lacks that "will to win" that all big time players in the NBA have. Hopefully he'll commit himself again this off-season to getting better on the court and not just physically.)
0 Enes Kanter - C+ (So young and so raw. Can't wait to see if he can reach his true potential and realize how good he can be. Kanter's grade may seem low just because he didn't really produce like you'd hope a 3rd pick in the draft would produce in his first year. Love his potential though.)
34 C.J. Miles - C- (Same old CJ. Great game at home, disappeared on the road. I thought he had it figured out when he was consistently driving to the hoop before chucking up jumpers all over the court...but reverted to his old ways before getting injured. C'est la vie, CJ.)
24 Paul Millsap - A- (Was figuratively neutered by Diaw and SA's D in the playoffs, but was a key cog in the Jazz machine this year. Did everything that was asked of him and played out of his mind for a "small" PF in this league. Can play the 3 and should just except that as his role for this team. Would love to see him as a long time Jazz man.)
6 Jamaal Tinsley - B+ (Had high hopes for him and he didn't disappoint. Showed craftiness and helped to mentor the kids from the bench. High character and great attitude all year)
11 Earl Watson - B (Exceeded expectations and was an overall great teammate.)

The coach:
Tyrone Corbin - D+ (I've been harsh on Corbin for the past month or two because it seemed like a lot of the teams success came from injuries to players that should NOT have been playing over guys on the bench in the first place. Corbin really needs to learn from this year and hopefully absorbed the epic coaching barrage that was laid on him by Pop and Crew in SA in the playoffs. Can he be the long term solution for this team as a coach? Chances are with how this organization is ran, whether we like it as fans or not, he WILL get a few years at least to figure it out...hope for the best guys, because reality is that's all we can do as fans.)

Expectations:
Did the Jazz meet your expectations (8th seed in the West (36-30) and eliminated against the Spurs in the first round of the playoffs)? - Sort of. The Jazz exceeded my expectations for the season, but failed to meet my "lofty" expectations in the playoffs of "winning JUST ONE GAME!". In the end though, I like the direction of this team, hopefully Corbin can grow and realize that playing young guys over vets can be a GOOD thing sometimes...

Which Jazz player was the ... :
MVP? - Paul Millsap (Him being neutralized in the playoffs was one of the key reasons we got swept. I have a feeling though that the teams MVP would have gone to Favors, had he been given the opportunity.)
DPOY? - Derrick Favors (Although Millsap was a beast this year in steals, I thought Favors was far and away our best defensive player on the team.)
MIP? - Gordon Hayward (Was given a ton of minutes this year and for the most part didn't disappoint. Again, he couldn't shoot for crap in the playoffs and that realllllly hurt this team. We need Hayward to be the player he can be all of the time, not just some of the time, for the Jazz to succeed.)
6th Man of the year? - Derrick Favors (Subway sub of the year. No doubt about it.)
Biggest surprise of the year? - DeMare Carroll (Came out nowhere and proved he belongs in the NBA. Good for him. I hope he continue to play with the same fire and intensity next year....IF he gets a "next" year with the Jazz.)
Biggest disappointment of the year? - C.J. Miles (Seems like every year you think that "If C.J. can just be consistent, we'll be great this year." but it never happens. 7-years, even for a guy out of high school is too long of an experiment to keep hoping something changes. Good luck C.J. wherever you go, I'll root for you to get that teams hopes up and eventually let them down the next night over and over again...)

Which Jazz player was the ... :
MVP? - Milsap
DPOY? - Hayward
MIP? - Favors
6th Man of the year? - Favors
Biggest surprise of the year? - Carrolle
Biggest disappointment of the year? - CJ Miles. He was in tip top shape, claimed to work his butt off but it all came down to how bad his IQ and motor are.

This

Good thread, but visually painful. I can only take it in small doses before my eyes cross and ****.

I don't know if we already have started something like this but what I want you to do is grade the players and eventually add a short comment why you gave this kind of a grade to a certain player and not a different one.

Enjoy...

Draft picks:
#3 – Enes Kanter - C. I didn't really know what to expect from Kanter, but he affirmed my biggest concerns and hopes for him. He is too slow, both physically and mentally, but can rebound like a beast. I was surprised by his defense, it was good at times, but mostly average. I expected him to be awful at it though.
#12 – Alec Burks - B-. Strong start, always attacking the rim and hitting enough shots to make defenses not totally disrespect him. Kind of hit a rookie wall later in the season and started taking some bad shots and tried to press on defense to hard at times.

Trades:
Mehmet Okur to the New Jersey Nets for a future second-round pick and a trade exception - A+. Just a great move. Sad to see him go, but it saved us a lot of money and gave us what might be a useful trade exception.

Signings:
11 Earl Watson - C-. Not a Earl fan, but he is a nice hustle guy when he is healthy. Too bad he is old and old people aren't healthy that often.
8 Josh Howard - C+. Not a Howard fan, but I felt like this move was a good try. He had his moments in the season, but he ultimately sucked.
6 Jamaal Tinsley - B. At a time I would have given this an A, but Tinsley's lack of offensive game hurt us in the playoffs when it would have been nice to have a PG who could hit a shot.
3 DeMarre Carroll - B+. Good hustle player who looks like he is getting a 2nd year from the Jazz.
2 Blake Ahearn - C. Just because it doesn't really matter. He was an insurance policy.

Players:
2 Blake Ahearn - See above
19 Raja Bell - C. As a Bell supporter I want to point out he shot above 40% from deep and nearly 50% from the field. Too bad he couldn't stay healthy.
10 Alec Burks - See above
3 DeMarre Carroll - See above
40 Jeremy Evans - A+. He won the Dunk Contest and made the Jazz a bit cooler. I don't think he is really a rotation player on the team, but he does provide energy in short spurts.
15 Derrick Favors - A-. Had moments were his defense was insane, had moments were it seemed like he traveled in the post every time he got it.
5 Devin Harris -B. Rough start, but once he found it I thought he was one of our better players. I always felt that when he was having a good game and pushing the ball, the Jazz were at their best.
20 Gordon Hayward - B. Same thing as with Harris, but instead of pushing the ball, making his outside shot. When he made his outside shot, things really clicked for the Jazz.
8 Josh Howard - See above
25 Al Jefferson - B+. He improved his passing and had an amazing A:TO ratio. Still is a bad defender and isn't as he needs to be on offense.
0 Enes Kanter- See above.
34 C.J. Miles - C-. Played like **** on the road, played awesome at home. Got injured. I should also mention when he played like ****, it was really ****ty.
24 Paul Millsap - B. I felt like he did a better job at improving his consistency on the rebounding and defensive end, but there were long stretches were I thought he played terrible on the offensive end, where we really needed him.
6 Jamaal Tinsley - See above
11 Earl Watson - See above

The coach:
Tyrone Corbin - A-. No training camp, rookie HC, lockout shortened season, 2 rookies and 3 sophomores getting playing time, a team that doesn't really fit together and he makes the playoffs.

Expectations:
Did the Jazz meet your expectations (8th seed in the West (36-30) and eliminated against the Spurs in the first round of the playoffs)? - Exceeded, then failed. I thought they would have a high 20 win season. Once they made the playoffs I thought they would 1 or 2 games though.

Which Jazz player was the ... :
MVP? - Jefferson
DPOY? - Favors
MIP? - Hayward
6th Man of the year? - Tinsley
Biggest surprise of the year? - Tinsley
Biggest disappointment of the year? - Hayward's playoff performance

.

This is true. 19 years old or not, MKG would take the team over and be the go-to leader. He won't be there at 8, though.

Hey there Pops, by wanting to get the 8th pick and "moving up", I think Wes was referring to packaging our 8th plus someone like Sap for MKG.

Draft picks:
#3 – Enes Kanter - B (The kids 19, and at a MINIMUM I see Joakim Noah, most teams can use a Noah. He has a knack for rebounding)
#12 – Alec Burks - B (In limited minutes he showed his offensive ability and his scoring ability)

Trades:
Mehmet Okur to the New Jersey Nets for a future second-round pick and a trade exception - A+ (Favors needs minutes! Always <3 the money man though)

Signings:
11 Earl Watson - B (When Harris played crappy Watson helped change the pace. Early oops to Evans were nice!)
8 Josh Howard - B- (I didn't know what to expect. Before injury he was cool. I saw what we could do without him though and that was nice as well. He is a contributor and he was worth his pay + 1 year contract)
6 Jamaal Tinsley - A (He was our 3rd string PG! Low risk, high reward)
3 DeMarre Carroll - A+ (I regret not getting his autograph at the Jazz game I went to just because I wasn't 100% sure of his name, fml [this was RIGHT when we got him])
2 Blake Ahearn - idgaf

Players
19 Raja Bell - F (Could've been a D- if he didnt still have years on his contract, but cmon guy hit an open shot)
40 Jeremy Evans - B
15 Derrick Favors - B+ (Gotta learn how to hit your free throws)
5 Devin Harris - B- (He pissed me off at the beginning of the season. INCONSISTENCY, but when he was in playoff contention he helped the team down the stretch.)
20 Gordon Hayward - B+ (Good 2nd half, WHERE YOU AT PLAYOFFS!!?)
25 Al Jefferson - A (You held it down AJ. As much as you are a black hole on offense, you have no 3 point shooters to help keep the D honest)
34 C.J. Miles - C (too streaky for my liking)
24 Paul Millsap - B+ (Same Millsap. Night in night out gives you hard work and effort. A crappy game could easily be forgotten with a clutch shot)

The coach:
Tyrone Corbin - C+ (Odd rotations. Took you a while to figure out to bench Raja but I give you credit to stickin to it. Shoulda started Carroll though. Not like he needs majority minutes. We were just in a GROOVE)

Expectations:
Did the Jazz meet your expectations (8th seed in the West (36-30) and eliminated against the Spurs in the first round of the playoffs)? - Right on with my expectations.

Which Jazz player was the ... :
MVP? - Big Al
DPOY? - Party Favors and it woulda been more obvious had he got more minutes.
MIP? - Hayzward (Pass, shoot, and he'll get you the hustle block)
6th Man of the year? - Favors (Playoffs made this obvious)
Biggest surprise of the year? - Showing that Tinsley and Howard still can contribute off the bench. Their place may not be on this team but they are still quality bench/role players.
Biggest disappointment of the year? - Getting swept. I honestly expected one win.

Draft picks:
#3 – Enes Kanter - C. It's tough to figure out Kanter. Just how much potential does he have? That's what will really determine this grade, so it's hard to give one. He was disappointing this season however, and that's what my grade is mostly based on. His inability to finish at the basket and utter lack of lift was not what I was expecting. On the other hand his potential should be very high considering he started playing basketball so late. I have some bust worries here, but I think Kanter should be able to improve to at the very least being a solid pick and pop big (nice jumpshot mechanics) with excellent rebounding and solid defense which ain't bad, but disappointing for a third pick. I'm not sure he will ever be an offensive weapon however.
#12 – Alec Burks - B-. Incredible at attacking the rim, but offers little else right now. I worry about his mindset in the opposite way that I worry about Gordon's. Too cocky, not sure if he's coachable. Even if he doesn't improve that much, at worst he'll be a solid 6th man scorer in the NBA which you can't complain about with the 12th pick.

Signings:
11 Earl Watson - B-. Was an A- earlier in the year, but he really fell off later.
8 Josh Howard - D. Hate this signing. The opposite of the kind of vet you want on a team with young guys. Selfish, bleh.
6 Jamaal Tinsley - B+. Can't complain about him. Ran the offense well. Sort of turned into chucker mode in the playoffs inexplicably though.
3 DeMarre Carroll - A-. Turns out he can shoot the 3 at least decently now, and is the kind of hustle player you want on your team. As long as he can keep working on his shot and staying within the teams defensive/offensive schemes he will be a solid player.

Players:

19 Raja Bell - C-. Got his percentages up and started sucking less in the middle of the season which was good. Then whatever the crap happened with him and Corbin happened. Who cares? I don't.
10 Alec Burks - C. Can attack the rim but can't do much else. Defense was disappointing, shot was a bit better than advertised which was good.
3 DeMarre Carroll - B. Shot 36% from 3 which was great to see from him, crazy hustle, great offensive rebounds, not the greatest B-Ball IQ however and not great defensively. I think with a full training camp he could really fit in nicely with this team.
40 Jeremy Evans - D+. He can dunk! That's it!
15 Derrick Favors - B. Defensive beast, but needs to improve jumpshot and FT% drastically. Once he does that he's just going to be flat out unstoppable. He's so quick and strong he doesn't even really need a go to post move as long as he can threaten you with a jumpshot, then drive.
5 Devin Harris - C+. He got better! But boy was he terrible early. He lacks the basketball IQ to be a great PG, but I think if we ran the offense through Hayward and let Harris be more of an attacker he could work for us next season. I like that he improved as the season progressed. He needs to be aggressive to be a good player, which hopefully we can facilitate.
20 Gordon Hayward - B. He does everything well. If it wasn't for his mental fragility and super streaky shooting he would have been an A-. Hayward is, at worst, the fourth best player on a good team and a great glue guy. I think he can become more but he needs to get his mind straight. He needs some of Burks' ego in his game desperately.
8 Josh Howard - C-. Meh. He can create his own shot, which usually doesn't go in, but whatever. He could have been worse I suppose.

25 Al Jefferson - B. He improved in his passing which was nice to see. His mid-range jumper also looked better. However, his team defense is terrible and his offense is not as good as it seems since he never gets to the line and takes FOREVER to do anything in the post. Still, our most consistent player.
0 Enes Kanter - D+. Rebounds well. That's all at the moment.
34 C.J. Miles - D-. He's terrible and has gotten worse every season he's been in the league. He only avoids an F because he played well in a few home games.
24 Paul Millsap - B+. He could be better than what he showed. Defensively he gets crushed sometimes, while other times he looks solid. He really lacks consistency, and it's hard to say why. Playing through injuries? Just matchup problems?
6 Jamaal Tinsley - B. Ran offense well. Showed some tricks up his sleeve.
11 Earl Watson - C+. Ran offense pretty well. Early-oops are fun.

Tyrone Corbin - C. Playing Favors so little this season was a travesty. Ran way too much 'dump ball into big al' offense. Got to the playoffs which shows that he was capable of getting a decent amount out of the team. Then got destroyed in the playoffs so badly that it was absolutely pathetic. Starting Howard was beyond ridiculous. If the coaches were swapped I believe the series would have gone to 7 games if not a Jazz win. Still I give him respect for telling Bell to sit down regardless of the consequences. And I liked how he handed over a ton of responsibility to Hayward late in the season. Still, I really doubt that he is NBA head coach material. Listening to him talk is a miserable experience.

Did the Jazz meet your expectations (8th seed in the West (36-30) and eliminated against the Spurs in the first round of the playoffs)? - Better than expected in terms of record. A bit worse than expected in terms of developing young guys, especially Favors and Burks who should have got more minutes.

MVP? - No one. Do I have to pick? I guess Millsap is the only answer I can give but I'm not happy with it.
DPOY? - Favors easily.
MIP? - Hayward easily.
6th Man of the year? - Favors.
Biggest surprise of the year? - Corbin benching Bell and bad blood emerging. Didn't see that one coming.
Biggest disappointment of the year? - Millsap. Funny that he was the MVP and biggest dissapointment. But I was hoping he would emerge as the leader of the team, but he's peaked as a third best player type on a good team and isn't going to get any better at this point.

I have watched all games without missing one. I only did like Favors, Burks and Hayward. I was so high on Kanter so I had disappointment on him(not his fault). Millsap was the Millsap. The rest of the team was a disappointment, not to grade higher than a C.

Making playoffs of course was a success but it certainly isn't a overachivement. This team could get a 6th or even a 5th seed and see a second round.

Biggest disappointment: Big Al & Ty Corbin duo.
