What's new

The backpacking/ hiking/ camping thread

Hey Vinylone, if you ever come to Utah, there are tons of awesome hikes. You should go to the Uintas. There are tons of trails that lead to literally thousands of lakes. You should check out the hikes that go to places like Red Castle Lake, Dead Horse Lake. Bring a fishing pole too if you like to fish. Hell, if you went hiking here, I would be willing to even go with you. You could always use a "hack" to hike with right?

My bad. Bro. Dean Karnazes.

I just read up on him some. Very interesting. On the one link I read, his first recommendation, be audacious, is one I think I have down pat. I have some very, very lofty ideas in mind. I don't think about them much because at this point going after them is simply so far off (3-5 years), so right now I'm simply focused on losing weight and transforming what was my soft 220 pound, 30% BF body into a 175-180 pound, 5-6% BF, shredded one, by eating healthy and avoiding or at least limiting any serious injuries or setbacks with the exercise I do along the way to get there. Like I said, I'm down to 197 and 22-23% BF now, but I'm still not even remotely thinking about the long-term goals that I do have in mind. It would cause impatience which would lead to doing too much too early which would lead to injury.

I have short-term goals I try to achieve now to get to the long-term, lofty ones. By the end of this summer, I want to be at about 191 and 17% BF. If I can get there, I'll then set another goal to achieve by say November 1st, perhaps of about 188 and 14%. Etcetera, etcetera.

You're the man Vinyl. I did a little research and found a Road Runner's Sports store about 25 minutes from me and called. They do everything you mentioned. I'm going tomorrow and they'll measure my arches, analyze the way my foot lands, do a gait analysis, videotape and play it back for a closer examination, etc., etc.

They also make custom-made orthotics. Should I get them? Thoughts? Anything I should ask while I'm there?

I don't usually frequent chain stores, but if they do all of that, I think it's definitely a step in the right direction.

Once analyzed they'll recommend shoes off of that. I'm currently in Nike Triax which I like. Good running shoe and can be used for trail running as well. Personally, I'd stick with New Balance, Saucony, Brooks and Nike as a last resort. I would also, without a doubt, replace the insoles. Buy some after market insoles and it will make all the difference in the world.

As far as orthotics go, I'd probably only get those if my podiatrist recommended them...I mean, I don't know how equipped a retail store is to make those recommendations. Just saying.

Oh yeah, make sure you go dressed in the clothing you run in so feel comfortable when you run for the gait analysis.

Good luck. Bro.

My buddy and I are thinking about backpacking White Mountain Peak. 14,252.

it was so much clearer on the old board where the actual LINK showed up a slightly different color.

How long of a trip would it be?

Yeah, I agree. I wonder if there is anything Jason can do to change that...

Anyway, the hike itself to the to the top of the mountain should only take a day, but you want to camp over night, at the very least, to acclimate to the altitude. You can stay the night at the trail head and that's at 12k feet.

I am a big fan of hiking I have done a bunch in the Uintas like Red Castle and Kings Peak. This last weekend I just went to Moab and spent a day there hiking and mountain biking. Nothing like what you are doing Viny but it was still good times.

The Uintas are perfect right now - wildflowers and all. If anyone wants to do an easy 3 hour roundtrip hike with their girlfriend, wife or significant other, you should check out the trail to Notch Lake (at the base of Notch mountain). About 2.5 miles to the lake you pass about 4 other lakes, through evergreens, streams, wildflower meadows, and have great views of the peaks - it's pretty much flat both ways so you can have good conversation and not be out of breath. Go up mirror lake highway from Kamas, around mile 24-28take a left to the Bald Mountain trailhead parking lot. From the map at the trail head go left towards notch lake. Great fishing, camping and cold water swimming - not a lot of people.
